I did.

Me too. thumbs up!

BTW: the Purplemusic WAV does not have the same clipping issue as the 3rdeyegirl.com WAV.

I dont have the PM version, but that's really strange... wouldn't there just be a single "master" file for all distributors?

Maybe. But I think the puchase page on Purple Music says it was mixed by Jamie Lewis.

I downloaded the purple music mp3 today and it's definitely an mp3
Offered now, not a wav. It looks like it is right with 0 clipping. The 3rd eye version is clipped to sheds. If you want the best sounding screwdriver, get it from purple music. Don't be put off by it being mp3, it's 320k and sounds fantastic.

I hope they go with the options to download 320mp3, FLAC, AAC with the new website.

I just bought all 4 tracks from 3rdEyeGirl. I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet but I'm pretty gutted that the RNR Remix is a lowly 160kbps ... 320kbps is fine but 160kbps is piss poor quality.

Using SoundForge, the WAV file I got from Purple Music (the day it went on sale) begins clipping immediately, in the first few seconds, and continues clipping throughout the song. Some of the worst spots are at 1:19-1:20, 2:25-2:26, 3:03-3:04, 4:09.

I see this visually AND the peak meters show it as well.

It's not worse than anything else on the market or any of the albums he's released in the last 5-10 years. In fact, I've seen worse, much worse. But, it IS clipping nonetheless....

That said, within the parameters of current standards, I'm happy with this. It sounds good. I'm not complaining about Prince. It's the standard that ALL in the industry are using that is shameful.

It's MUCH better and has much less clipping than the remix...

This ^

Demand Lossless audio if you can. Accept 320 if you must. But never ever buy LoFi digital music.

First time I've read this (not surprising I suppose on here).

What are the bit-rates of the other tracks?

Yeah, I know audio, I don't know how to do screenshots or how to post them here.

I gave you the timings you requested, someone else can do pictures. 4:09 is the worst spot.

I used SoundForge. I used the WAV purchased from Purple Music the day it went on sale.

The Play Meter is set to show clipping at the default parameters of -90 to 0 dB. This is standard.

On the visual display of the wav, the clipping can be seen only at the timings I gave you, which is MUCH better than the remix which clips WAY too much.

I'm not saying this is bad. Well, ALL clipping is bad, but, this is waaaaay better than most current releases which are usually more like the remix and clip constantly.

Screwdriver Remix & Breakfast Can Wait are 320kbps, RNR Remix 7 is 160kbps.

Don't know about Screwdriver as I bought the wav from Purple Music.

Well, having listened to them all, the strange thing is that RNR Remix isn't the worst sounding of the bunch.

Screwdriver is clipped but that doesn't bother me too much as it gives it a kind of punky, recorded in a basement, quality that I quite like. I'd far rather have RNR Remix as 320kbps but the 160kbps sound surprisingly better than I expected.

To my ears, Breakfast Can Wait and Screwdriver Remix both have the most audible distortion. I'm certain I can hear crackling in the right channel at various point in both tracks.

Seems a shame to be moaning about the sound quality though ... I really like all four tracks.

Thanks. Odd that there is such a difference across the tracks. I think it shows whoever is "in charge" of the actually nuts and bolts doesn't really have a clue.

it would also explain why prince has complained about digital music. He needs someone that understands it to produce his mp3 files.

Yeah, it seems to me that an artist that doesn't like and complains about the limitations of digital formats would always be sure to offer a lossless version. Am I being too logical? wink

Haven't we all been fans long enough to know that logic has no place in such discussions. lol
