You are right. This is the studio version, towards the end you will here the guitar hook that is used in the teaser video. I prefered the teaser video version at first. But this studio mix is cool, its a grower.

Right, I was referring to the lyric video which went up on http://20pr1nc3.com/ a couple weeks back. It's the same recording, but I think I hear some subtle differences.

Edit: I see in the other thread that folks have noticed the same.

Yes...video version is 4:28m and the single mix is 4:13m cool

That's true but the video version has 4 seconds of silence at the beginning and 11 seconds at the end!

Exactly. I don't support DRM, and I prefer physical releases. If prince wants my money, he'd better release this on cd and vinyl, but I will not pay a dime for that I-tunes-crap.

iTunes hasn't used DRM for years. In fact, I can't think of anyone that does anymore.

Yeah DRM isn't really an issue any more, can't remember the last time I encountered it. It's just I like lossless so I can convert it to a desired format/bit-rate for my own gear and keep the lossless for "the collection" just like I would a CD.

I still prefer a CD, but if it's not coming, then lossless will do just fine and well, anything is better than youtube/web cache rips like a lot of recent stuff that never got a proper release.

Did Purple Music really confirm that there will be no physical release?

Screwdriver is the much better song imho, and it would be a shame if it didn't get the same treatment as RNR Love Affair.

I don't want to pay twice for digital and physical releases. So I better wait a while. I would buy a single-cd and vinyl immediately, but right now I stick to the free onlinestream (which I downloaded, of course).

Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed there are some very subtle differences. Bought it from Amazon but being a quality whore when it comes to Prince I'm gonna have to buy the .wav from Purple Music too. Still fits my budget. LOL!

Edit: Just purchased from Purple Music. Got an email confirmation. Order shows as pending and I can't download? Is there a delay before being sent the download ID they are requesting? It's almost been 1/2hr. Just curious.

To buy Prince music is a weird "journey". He sure ain't "normal".

I miss it back when Prince was a hit and you could actually buy his music in a shop.

to answer the Question:

No, I won't buy Screwdriver: I have an mp3 already,

I will wait for the album - and then buy in lossless, won't buy the song until then.

And if an album ain't coming soon, - maybe not coming at all ---- then nevermind.

The whole discussion about bitrates and file quality shows the quality of Princes output today! i like screwdriver and it's one of the better songs of Prince in the last few years (for me). if he really would release songs with a lil bit more spirit of a James, Sly, Hendrix, Miles...(ideas, musical freedom, love of experimentation, production, mixing, vision... musicians he admires so much) we wouldn't discuss about bitrates. I would grab and pay immediately for the first file available just to get a first impression whats going on in the Prince laboratory! screwdriver and RnRLA are nice pop rock tunes but just a lil bit harmless for an artist with such musical skills... so much talent and possibilities...

Lewis did a great job! i like the mix. great! props!!! sounds great on my stereo!

Prince: ROCK ON! cool!

the actual length of the song works out right for comparing the track lengths. of the two.

I also thought the mix is good on this one.

Is it really Jamie Lewis who does the final mixes of Prince's original versions these day? Did he do RNRLA as well? Although I don't really like the song so much, I think the mix is pretty decent!

Mixed by Jamie Lewis & Ben Muehlethaler at B-Note entertainment

It looks like! ooh wee... screwdriver bangs hard! I like the mix too.... BANGIN'!

You have a low quality mp3, the iTunes version is far superior. I expect the lossless is a little better but my ears are old, so it's irrelevant.

^ true.. but what I was trying to say...

I will wait for the album and then buy in lossless, hopefully a CD or dl in wav..

I am not collecting singles. A Screwdriver "single" ain't that important for me, to have in lossless.

ps I know Prince said he ain't releasing albums no more, but he could change his mind, I really hope so..

I bought the wav format from Purple Music sounds great.

People here have been banging on about having new music and the ability to download it. Finally Prince is reluctantly coming around, and still people moan and grizzle talk to the hand

yeahthat

I edited the silence from the beginning and end of the video version and was left with 4:13.

That said, since several of you were so kind as to let us know the "mp3" at Purple Music was actually a wav file, and, since they say there will be no physical release, I went ahead and purchased it.

Haven't listened to the wav yet though. It's been a busy day...

Agreed! I would like to know beforehand in which format(s) a song will become available. I want the best possible sound quality, and it would suck if a song was mp3 first, then flac or wav download became available, and then suddenly the song appears on a new CD album! Don't want to be forced to buy the same songs over and over again.

Since nobody is forcing anybody to buy anything, I assume you mean, you don't want to be tricked into buying the same songs over and over again...

Just listened to the file I downloaded from Purple Music. Other than the fact that, like all music these days, it's mastered too loud and compressed to much, it sounds great. Much better than the video file at least.

Just bought it on iTunes UK for 79p.

Have no problem with buying it in this format. It's instant, I can listen to it in the car, doesn't take up too much iPhone capacity, if it comes out on an album/CD it's no different to the old days of buying a new 7" single a few weeks/months before the new vinyl album came out.

I say support Prince's releases on thing like iTunes/Amazon. The more we do, the more likely he is to see a return and use them more in the future...
