What if Sly Stone, Radiohead and other artists complained in a magazine that they did not like Prince's covers of their tunes in concert or on record the way Prince whines about it. Prince, you do the exact same thing you lament other artists for doing. I'm happy that Prince is doing any press at all, and he has a lot of publicity going for him, but I'm waiting on the day, he moves on from ownership of masters, people covering his songs etc. and go back to the music.

I loved the part where he said he hadn't covered anything on a recording "recently." Dude - just three years ago, you did a Crimson and Clover/Wild Thing mash-up on Lotusflow3r.

He has a very short memory for anything that doesn't involve "wrongs" done to him.

Yep, that, and there's no mention of "Wild Thing" on the tracklisting. Do you think he is paying royalties to Chip Taylor (the writer)?

I blame the writer for that too. She said she hadn't thought to ask him about his own covers until after the interview. The folks these mags be sending up there to do interviews are too busy being star struck, the first time in Paisley Park, they spend more time commenting on the decor than having substantive convo.

And of course PRince's policy of no recordings allows him plausible deniability: "that's not what I really said."

Well, that might be part of it. But frankly, trying to do an interview when you aren't allowed a tape recorder or a notebook is damned difficult. You don't have access to any of the questions you prepared ahead of time and you're so busy trying to remember what your subject said (so you can quote accurately later) that it's hard to remember your questions or formulate new ones in the moment. It's also extremely stressful, worrying that you're going to forget something important to the story.

I've been a reporter. This is not the way you want to work, even with the steadiest of subjects - which, let's face it, is not a way most people would describe Prince. lol

Prince uses cheat sheets for his lyrics these days. That reporter did three hours and wrote a decent story with nothing.

Is it plausible that Prince could hire a stenographer to take notes of the interview and Prince could give a copy of the transcript to the writer, to quote him accurately. That woud solve all of these problems.

Sure, he could. But he won't. He has no deniability that way. lol

i don't think prince is being dishonest or hypocritical when he says he dislikes recording covers for inclusion on albums, i just think he changes his mind a lot. he maybe sees thing from both sides and depending on when you ask the answer can vary.

anyway to me the reporter seems angrier than prince in the article below, for some reason. if he's actually quoting prince, then his spin is pretty negative, imo. remember, this is e-online. they have a link to the 'top ten feuds of the year' and they seem in the business of creating feuds, in order to have subject matter to write about.

and there's another item on the front page about someone's see through top. journalism? uhhhh........... lol

the sad thing is, people are sheep, half asleep. there are a few comments being posted that take this so-called journalism at face value, and seemed a bit peeved with what the reporter at e-online construed him to have said.

His Purpleness isn't so hot for Madonna and Maroon 5.

In a wide-ranging interview in Billboard's latest issue, of which he graces the cover, Prince had some not-so kind words to say about his fellow performers.

Talking about his contract with Warner Bros. Records—over which he was so upset at what he considered the company's botched promotion of his albums that he changed his name to a symbol for several years in protest—the 54-year-old music legend lashed out at the Material Girl, whom he blamed for taking up much of the label's focus at his expense.

"It was also about Madonna," Prince told the magazine (via Zap2it) regarding his decision to churn out a series of albums to fulfill his contractual obligation so he could declare his independence. "She was getting paid, but at the time we were selling more records and selling out concerts on multiple nights."

As it happened, Madonna also sought freedom from the heavy hand of the music giant when she exited Warner, which had distributed her Maverick Records label for 15 years, for a lucrative deal with Live Nation in 2007.

But the Queen of Pop wasn't only one in Prince's bad books.

The mercurial Minneapolis musician also took a shot at Maroon 5 for covering his classic hit "Kiss." While Prince himself said he has no problem covering other bands' tunes in his concerts and paying the requisite royalty for doing so, he questioned the point of recording another artist's track for actual release.

"Why do we need to hear another cover of a song someone else did? Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what's already there," he said.

Ouch. No word what Maroon 5, or Madonna for that matter, has to say about all of this.

As for the future of his own artistic endeavors, the artist formerly known as "The Artist formerly known as Prince" revealed, "I don't do albums anymore…I do songs."

No word when he'll be putting out new tracks. His last album was 2010's 20Ten. For now, Prince has been auditioning a new drummer in advance of a possible tour and is gearing up to accept the 2013 Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards Ceremony happening in Las Vegas on May 19.

Check out the top 10 feuds of 2012

tbh. i don't know what to think about him disliking covers. i'm okay that he is honest about it and ok he doesn't like it when there are recorded ok. but he did as well and not even that long ago... also what's wrong if covers are done? i'm not a fan of covers, but there are some good ones. if they don't record it and perform it live once in awhile, i don't see that big of a deal.

Dave Grohl jammed with Prince.... did Prince say to Dave that he disliked the cover he did with Foo Fighters of Darling Nikki????

I love Prince, but, on the subject of covers, he either needs to come clean about what is different about his own released recordings of covers and why he now feels differently, or, shut the funk up. It just makes him look hypocritical at best, stupid at worst...

He'll say that he was misrepresented.

Or that he's friends with people who record other people's songs. Indeed, they read the bible together.

Prince should NEVER do interviews. We've learned NOTHING about him in the 25+ years he's been doing them.

"I do songs", lol. I can't think of anything that guy has put out in the last 3 years or so that was an actual song. He's also funny for saying art is about laying a new foundation, blah, blah, blah. He is not Prince, but KING of building songs around pre-existing foundations he copied from the radio, his band members, etc, etc. He is KING of copying the mood and feel off old songs, without crediting the original artists. At least Maroon 5, who are huge Prince fans, gave credit where it was due.

Unfortunately he did open his mouth. Now were gonnna have to defend this guy from annoying madonna fans (which i can't understand why they exist) and i feel bad for maroon 5 who just covered one of their favorite songs. Prince lighten up a little. U cover music too. I understand that u have been burned by other people covering ur music but isn't it the ultimate compliment that those artists are covering ur music? ALthough P does have a point because he didn't cover anything till emancipation and by then prince was already famous so it wasn't like he was using covers for attention. Plus P, covers the most random songs.

didn't he say at the time of Emancipation that he always wanted to put covers on his albums but WB wouldn't let him?

I know that's complete bullshit, but still... he said it.

Ur right he did say that. But still he got famous without them. Besides P didn't really cover anything on a studio album that was overly famous.

I read the article and it really sounds like he is just stating a fact or perception, not dogging out Madonna. And I know he's played with Maroon 5 before so obviously he likes the group. I think now it's about the media making something out of nothing...which is exactly what he wants. He's not a stupid man and knows he has covered other people's songs. BY saying that he has not...creates conversation.

So now he has alot of people talking and it will inadvertently put him in the press and talk about his upcoming endeavors.

Same Prince. Different year.

doesn't matter. he's done it. and he did very shortly before he started complaining about covers. he's been saying this for a few years no, very shortly after he put one on an album.

he knows he's full of shit, though, which is why he's now added the caveat about being okay with performing them live, since the reporter probably doesn't have the werewithall to call him on putting covers on his albums as this nonsense is spewing out of his mouth.

I agree. I read the Billboard article and did not read it as a the "diss" the e-online writer found.
