Is the record a success once it is created? Have heard Prince mentioned this during an interview about his records being a success once they are created. Monte Moir, The Electric Man and myself had a discussion on this during one installment of the MPLS radio special. Check out the conversation:

It depends on your definition of success. If Prince Music gets in my hand I consider it a success.

are you kidding?, of course it is, what could be more creatively satisfying for a real musician making real music to hear a song or whole album done and sounding great. The icing on the cake of course is if it sells bucket loads but as we all know thats down to the system and if you want to be in the game. Look at the Rave cd, Prince decided to play the game , tonnes of interviews, tonnes of TV appearances and still the cd did not sell. Of couse this was not helped by the fact that the lead video was delayed, baby knows wasn't released and above all you when you listen to that project his soul isn't in it. Now compare that to his remixed version 'Rave into ...', where he lets loose a lot more, now that sounded much more like a Prince record and would have maybe sold more. I could go on but to conclude with the fact that the releases from TRC onwards sound so fresh and energised yet how many have they sold?, artistically Prince sounds very happy and that sound is on record.

I definitely agree it is a success once the artist has created the music. Getting out and doing live shows also helps any record.
