I tend to prefer Prince doing funk, but I could never get enough of the rock (particularly the psychedelic-brand) guitar. I think one of the coolest things about the Minneapolis sound, though, is that varying genres generally do not exist apart.

i think it just means you prefer the funkier stuff. No harm in that! I prefer anything with that guitar work. You know the kind I'm talking about. The kind of stuff on TRC and The Undertaker cd. Man, the way he played that gee-tar on the 25th of June at the Park...whew! just gimme that all the time! smile

Another twist to the tale. I prefer Prince's funk from the 80s. Nowadays, I prefer his more guitar influenced pieces. He seems to have stepped off that electric funk vibe and is more soulful with his guitar playing.

Anji, I think Prince is a true funkateer. He tears up the music and feels the funk. I like his rock moments, but when he gets into the funk! Man! Oh Man! He takes me to another planet!

Speaking of Bon Jovi, the folk in India can't get enough of them. They also really like Bryan Adams. When you're out there, you can't help but get into it also. lol

I can't say how he is now
(as I've heard VERY LITTLE of his work since '99)
but back in the day,
when he REALLY kicked ass & looked good doing it..

I'd say he did funk
&
rock
equally very well.

He could wail on songs like "Let's Go Crazy" or "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" to name JUST a few..

or he could bring the funk
HARD
on a jam like "Let's Work" or "Sexy Dancer"

or, in many cases, combine elements of both in classics like "Lady Cab Driver" or "Automatic"..

DAMN, he was so good back then..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I may be crazy ,but I think your perception is close to being rigt.I think he is a great artist that likes and feels all types of vibes. However,I think there is something in the Black psyche that makes a man just funk better.I mean,he adds rock to his funk which makes it all so incredible to me.It tkes the funk to another level.

In my opinion,Black artists that play rock music still have funk in their core,This is what makes rock made by Black artists slightly different anuimals than that made by White artists,fo instance. And I am not saying that there aren't White artists who are funky and all. It's a state of mind.

Do Prince,Fishbone,Living Colour,Hendrix,24/7 spyz,Follow 4 Now,Saul Williams,Black Jack Johnson,Ben Harpr, etc.sound much at all like for instance,Van Halen,Alice In Chains,Soundgarden,AudioSlave,Queens of the Stone Age,Metallica,The Stones,u2,Incubus,The Police,Rush,RHCP,Foo ighters,Green Day,or The Clash? Not at all.And tht may be a really bad argument ,but it is ho I hear things.Brothers like the bottom quite a bit. It's all variations and conversations with the bottom.Caucasion brothers are more on the high tip.

Mind you...these are generalizations I make. It's all love to me.

I have to disagree with you there. Prince's funk is certainly inspired/borrowed/stolen (whatever you'd like to call it) from lots of parliament/funkadelic stuff, not to mention james brown and sly and the family stone...there's lots of marvin gaye in those soul records too and some jackie wilson. I also think that to say his rock stuff takes from hair bands is nuts since it is far more indicative of santana, zeppelin, hendrix, and many other 60's and 70's acts. He's not terribly original at that side either. What he is responsible for is the blending of so called "white" sounds with so called "black" sounds. We can take it for granted today, but back when his first four or five albums came out, there wasn't anything like that...ever! In my opinion, P set the foundation for all this genre-crossing music we are hearing today.

Anji, my lil' funkmeister:

Prince is best at doing pop---check out his biggest hits.

He can "do" funk, and r&b,-he can PLAY them, but I don't think it's necessarily his best work.

I think the insecurity from the critisism that he wasn't "black enough", produced the Black Album has stayed with him---

he wants to keep showing off his funk/r&b credidentials, but I think he's afraid to admit that he's best at creating music based in the pop vein.

I know you dig Newpower Soul, but that album showed to me that Prince cannot produce a great end-to-end full-on funk album. He can't pull off a Parliament album.

His biggest hits deserved to be hits, and note that almost all are pop songs, with licks and tinges of rock or r&b, or funk, but whose structures are founded in pop.

+++Housequake, and Prettyman are wicked takes on James Brown;

+++We Can Funk, and 1+1+1 is 3 are wicked takes on George Clinton;

But "When Doves Cry", and "Sign o' the Times" are PURE Prince and more "true" songs to Prince's strengths as an originator, and therefore have a greater historical place in his catalog.

Dig me?

Best at creating music in the pop vein? That is an interesting response, Warning. Maybe you're right but I would suggest that's more an 80s Prince phenomena, as it is also with Prince's funk. Nowadays, I think he's more soulful on guitar oriented music but I am interested to see what's next after The Rainbow Children. I have a feeling we'll be in for something special.

By the way, I should really qualify this Newpower Soul issue. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I love it. Far from it, in fact. It is lacking true inspiration as a whole but in spite of that, I can certainly appreciate it for what its worth. In a number of places, it is very Prince worthy.

During "Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic", fans were screaming, "release So Far, So Pleased as a single! Dammit, Prince, release Baby Knows as the next single! Crap, why is Man o War the Next single!?!?"

that's because in their hearts, Prince fans know the only music that will reel'em in is the POP songs. That is what will make him popular, make critics take note.

Prince fans like his quirky stuff, but he's best at composing memorable POP compositions. Just the facts, jack.

Anji, you can trip on the groove of "Strange Relationship" on the live album, or dig the horns of "Freaks on this side" (I mention that one because of you love for NPS), but it just cannot beat out "ICNTTPOYM" for clean, simple composition and execution. A better song. With a rock taste.

get freaky, let yo head bob, Anji! Peace.

He's equally fluent at both styles. If you remember, when
he started playing in teen bands the radio stations in
Minneapolis were more Rock orientated than Soul. In fact
i recall Andre and Prince both saying that there were no
Urban Contemporary stations when they were starting out.

Some of the best examples of Prince's work in both styles:

Rock: Question of U,..JOy in Repetition...I Could Never
Take The Place of Your Man...Let's go Crazy...Gett Off
Get IT Up (that was him on the lead solos...not JESSE)
Just My Imagination..Private JOy and one of my all time
faves-Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad

Funk:
Party-up...LEt's Work...Sexy MF..Sexy Dancer...SIgn o'
The Times...Scarlet P...Sexuality...Erotic City and DMSR.

There's dozens more but those are the ones i can think of...

I like his funk better. His own stuff, the Time, Vanity 6 etc. His rock stuff is too bubblegum for me. Let's Go Crazy is a fun song but very cheesy. Rock elements in many songs but not what I would call a true rocker.
