Prince has only one released song that fits what I think you're needing and it's "Do U Lie?" from Parade. That's about as traditional jazz as he gets, and it's barely that. Contrary to what people seem to think, Prince knows jazz as well as he knows Arabic.

I was just about to suggest "Do U Lie?" but steakfinger beat me to it.

How about "Love Like Jazz"?

I think of Do U Lie as something heavily influenced by the old French chanson tradition (only it is in English, except for the word boudouir). The string arrangement may pass the impression of jazz though.

Note that I said "and it's BARELY that." The "that" being what the OP was looking for, namely jazz. We are in 100% agreement, BrazilianOnRaspberryBeret.

What was the name of the (video) recording of the rehearsal with Canndy Dulfer, Maceo Parker and Prince? Musicology era. I recall them playing something of Miles Davis.

@ Miles, Novabrkr and artist 76

Thanks for your great posts! Very informative and enlightening smile

Being a complete layman concerning jazz, I would appreciate your views on

"In a large room with no light".

I always thought of the track as filled with jazz influences (especially the drumming).

This idea only became stronger when the 2011 version came out in a, for me, jazz-light version.

It was "Footprints"... by Wayne Shorter, also covered by Miles Davis

Normally, I would say to turn to The Vault or Xpectation. BUUUTTTT! Right now I'm really digging the live version of "The Other Side of the Pillow" from the One Nite Alone..Live! Collection.

What is your main problem?

Strollin' from Diamonds and Pearls is also one of my favorites. But that's less jazz and more blues, imo.

Gee fambam93! You been reading my mind! After reading this thread I remembered of this song. I've been listening to it a lot these days. Love it. I also think it´s jazzy. Not in a bebop or dixieland way, genres of jazz more commonly known. But it´s vocal jazz. Beautiful vocal harmonies, adventurous vocal lines. I could be saying bullshit (but if I am I want to be answered with a why or it will not have validity razz ), but I could imagine it being sung by one of the greatest jazz vocalists, in the more traditional pop genre they all would often approach. For example, Ella Fitzgerald doing it live with some great piano virtuoso like Tommy Flanagan, and filling it with improvised lines and scat singing. Prince´s recording is vocally adventurous, and, with few more elements, it could be definately a vocal jazz recording.
