OMG, I was listening to the original version of 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic' (1988 version) last night for the first time! I've had it for a while but, since the original doesn't do much for me, I'd left it alone. FAR better than the official version; why did P remove those strings? confuse

Okay, my twocents

I DO like 'Rave' (and LOVED it when it was released) but, in retrospect, I'm glad he's opted for the more organic, 'live'-sounding approach again. The 'Kirky J' years (or his influence) sound far too dated, now.

However, it has some of THE most beautiful songs in Prince's canon: 'TGRES', 'Eye Love U...', 'Man 'o' War', to name but a few. It's certainly far more inspired than 'New Power Soul'. I don't think this album will be the the one critics look back on in a 100 year's time and WOW over; but it's much better than a load of the crap that was released that year (something you can say about MOST of P's albums).

'When I first heard 'TGRES' I didn't quite 'get' it, but I found it unusual and intoxicating and I KNEW it would wreak havoc on me at some point. Several listens later... BAM! hammer AMAZING song.

What I DON'T get is how everyone raves over the title track (one of the weaker songs on the set, IMO; sounds too dated now) and 'Strange But True'. Even 'Q' Magazine named that as one of the 3 best songs on the album in its' review. I dig it, but it's nowhere NEAR being a favourite track. Someone - convince me!!!

The music is lacking in colors like Lisa and Wendy brought to his music. He probably only used a cheap box of 8 crayons when he could have had a 64 box of Crayola Crayons.
He now sings of Rainbow Children but there's no colors.

Hmmm...I was never thrilled with Rave, but as always some tracks really stand out.

I especially like Everyday is a Winding Road...but of course I liked NPS too... boxed

I remember when I first got Rave I was quite disappointed.
The title track seemed really insipid, and I was a bit worried
when the first track on the album that really let rip was
a cover version! (albeit almost unrecognisable from the
original). The running order seemed very strange too, most
of the best songs seemed to be towards the end of the
album! and one of the best tracks was tacked on the end
as an uncredited bonus track.

Where's Rave's soul?

nowhere,
I take for what it is; a conciously crafted pop album with a few good spots and a few bad spots, as most pop records today are.
So there's really nothing wrong with it if yo take it for what it is: a pop album, not a prince album.

It's inconsistent, even by Prince's standards, but there ARE some gems in there if you look.

I'm the only person in the fucking world that loves "Undisputed", but I may be biased given my appreciation for both Prince AND Chuck D.

Pretty Man
Greatest Romance
Strange But True
Wherever U Go
Baby Knows

Add in the Rave IN2 tracks

Hot Wit U (nasty girl remix)
Beautiful Strange

Not his best effort, but I'll spin it occasionallly. Shit, New Power Soul has it's moments. This weekend, I discovered never-before-seen goosebumps listening to "The One"...

I much prefer the Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic album.
I think it has a lot more commercial potential.
(I still think the running order needs rearranging though)
