Question about "Sexy Dancer" 12in Promo Browsing through Ebay today and I come across this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eB...SS:US:1123
It says in the description that it is a promo that has this track list: TRACKS - SEXY DANCER (LONG VERSION), CONTROVERSY (LONG VERSION) CAT NO WB26196
Does anyone know if this is real? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I just went to one of my favorite vinyl haunts. It looks legit. WB26196 is an actual Warner Bros. release number. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Thanks, Genesia. I appreciate it. I will keep my eye on it!! **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I think the 12" of SD was released in the UK. And what they call 'CONTROVERSY (LONG VERSION)' is the album version. I have seen this 12" listed on hot wax and other web sites as well. I just do not know if it was ever official released or was a promo only or what.
the SD long version is cool: it has more of the instrumental 'solos' and a funky slowed down voice intro. [Edited 1/25/13 8:42am] "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

There's another (more rare) 12" version that has Bambi on the B-side. That's the one I have. I paid a mint for it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

that was the UK version if I am not mistken. SD was repleased as a single in the UK. This one here was made 2 years later. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Is that the 8:51 version? If so then that's the one I have.

Looks fake and new and sealed says fake to me. Google up the real disc image which isn't white. There are boots of this and that's prolly one at that price. As seller for more photos including back label and inner matrix. And await no reply.

Why fake that? There is no real reason. And I have seen others for sale and the seller had a good reputation. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

why say something is fake when it looks visually different to the original item which is over 30 years old, and this is "new and sealed" and the starting price is 99c for an item of far higher value?
because if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and shits like a duck, then it's likely to be a duck

the released 12 inch had Bambi as a B-side, right?
And not Controversy..? Prince 4Ever.

Yeah in the UK. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Has to be fake. The 12" of Sexy Dancer is one of the few Prince records to have held it's value while prices have plumetted for other collectables like Gotta Stop Messin About and the Let's Work 12"
I guess because Let's Work showed up on the Ultimate Prince collection and Gotta Stop on the Bsides disc ? if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Any idea of the value of used but good condition copy of sexy dancer/bambi uk version?
Thanks in advance. | |

I paid around $100 for mine (including shipping). I've seen a few a bit lower since then, though. (I bought it on eBay and the bidding got a little fierce at the end. I've seen it for around $75 from people selling it outright.)
Mine was in "near mint" condition in its original sleeve. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

notice the colour/fill on the label that's not present on the ebay image?

and the matrix markings
now if you open your eyes and read the label in the OP compared to the label in my images you can see the differences such as the missing "manufactured in UK" under SIDE ONE and the incorrect and missing catalogue details on the right of the disc opposite where it says side one
plus look at the warners logo on the OP's. notice the missing (R) - now even on a promo a record company wouldn't fuck up their logo
so as i said from the start, it's a fugazi

Wow. Then the ones I saw at my usual vinyl source must be boots, too. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

that catalogue number on the OP's photo is not for sexy dancer, and sexy dancer was never backed with controversy. maybe because the track controversy came from a later album. not just the follow up album from prince, which had sexy dancer on it, but the album that came out after that
why you wanna treat me so bad was the 7" b side and bambi was the 12" b side. both the A side and B sides were all from the second album called "prince"
my copy is the first pressing. you can tell from the picture if you know what to look for

This is the song that hooked me 2 Princey.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I think it is legit. the seller has a stellar record on ebay. And I have found it on other web sites for vinyl. I do not see any reason this would be bootleg.

it's fake. have a look at the link you just posted as evidence it's fake. there is no such official release. that nonsense says promo on one side and not on the other. the controversy single had when you were mine on it
the real controversy single looked like this

look at princevault that lists all the different versions of sexy dancer
http://www.princevault.com/index.php/Single:_Sexy_Dancer
notice also that side two is on the wrong side of the record label
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
oh: it had "side one" (on the left) and "side 2" (on the right) *the records left and right.
it just surprises me that 1) anyone would make a bootleg of that. and 2) pretty decent sellers would sell it as legit.
"Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

there's been several different bootleg pressings of it as it's a very rare prince 12" single that was only available in the UK. there are many bootleg and pirate pressings of prince stuff like let's work extended
the sellers may not know or care it's a pirate. if they buy second hand from a seller, they wouldn't necesarily know otherwise, especially if they bought in a bulk load of old records from someone. the guy in the OP's post has sold 9000 records, mostly 80s and 90s by the quick look i gave. so he could easily have a few fakes in there without knowing or caring. he will just buy second hand records from places, clean them and sell them on. if it looks legit, and that copy fooled some here, then the dealer wouldn't know otherwise if he was given a single copy. he's not going to scrutinise every record. he may well know it's a bootleg but think that selling at a cheap price won't hurt anyone, just like all the cheap pirate copys of goldnigga or other OOP cd's
some fakes are more obvious and look like bootlegs, but others copy detail, but if you know what you are doing they are pretty easy to spot, such as the fake label which is the wrong colour, the missing (R) in the logo, side two on the wrong side of the label and a catalogue number that doesn't exist or even fit in with the usual catalogue numbers, either official or promos. the real promos look nothing like the label that says promo on it. there's also all the missing catalogue details. i can't see the matrix details which are usually another giveaway
