What u looking at me for? I have no idea. So please, homosexuals of the org, which Prince songs are gay anthems?

There must be some. Give me the top 5. I'm doing market research into the word 'gay' and all things 'gay'.

There must be some.

There seems to be an inherent gayness about a lot of Prince's music, not that he is gay of course because he certainly isn't gay.

okay, i will bite this bait, and see if i get reeled in...

lemme think...

personally, there really arent any that say "gay" to me, but here are some that i use in my one man show...

Little red corvette
in a piece where i talk about experimental str8 boys. works better when u hear it in context.

if i was your girlfriend
in a piece where i talk about the man who i fell most in love with who was my str8 best freind. the lyrics really work well with the tone and idea piece.

I don't think he necessarily has gay anthems, per se, but Uptown and Anna Stesia immediately come to mind for me.

Cool.

If I Was Your Girlfriend is a very powerful song. This is not really so relevant but I actually just used the lyrics to that song in an e-mail to my wife to try to show her how desperately I want to feel closer to her when we're staying apart. What a great song.

Hmmm... Its all about interpretation really, isn't it?

Sexuality: They're all a bunch of double drags who teach their kids that love is bad

Could interpret as same-sex love

Free: Don't sleep until you're guilty, 'cuz sinners all R we, There's others doing far worse than us, so be glad that U r free

Could refer to gay-rights, especially with the impetus on "us" as in "us and them"

The Rest Of My Life: Cuz I'm alive and that's reason enough 4 me 2 bust a smile, I've arrived and now I wanna stay 4 a little while

Could be interpreted as a Coming-Out story. Arrived where exactly? Out of the closet?

I Wanna Be Your Lover: I ain't like those other guys you hang around

No - because all the other guys watch sport on TV and sleep with women

I wanna be your brother, I wanna be your mother and your sister too, There ain't no other that can do the things that I'll do to you

Ha! Ha! Ha!

I never hear Prince songs when I am in a gay club or bar...

although I remember Controversy being played once, just once sad

But I don't think Prince actually has gay anthems. It's raining man is an anthem, High Energy or Ich bin wie du. Or eurovision song contest songs. Or YMCA. wink

Okay, I'm gay, and I've spent my fair share of my nightlife in gay bars listening/dancing to the music. My first question is, what is your definition of gay anthems?

My definition, and what I think most of the "gay community," whatever that means, defines gay anthem as a dance song that has a good beat, a driving bass line, some sort of breakdown that builds back up to an incredible explosion of loud bass and melody that makes you lose your mind on the dance floor and dance your ass off. One of the best examples of this is Hex Hector's remix of Deborah Cox's "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here." That remix is just amazing. Gay anthems aren't song that have lyrics or comments about being gay because if the beat is boring (or under 120 bpm it's not going to get club play).

So, using that definition, Prince has no gay athems. His music has not been officially remixed for club play. I seriously think that Whitney Houston and Cher's careers have been saved by talented remixers taking their songs and remixing the hell out of them, turning them into gay anthems. Prince did have a couple of songs remixed, but they never caught on big to become gay anthems.

Personally, I loved the disco remix of "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold," and the guy's name who did it I can't think of right now. However, it didn't catch on at clubs.

Also, there have been whitelabel remixes of "Gett Off," "Controversy," and "Hot Thing," and "I Would Die 4 U" released, but those are bootlegs remixes and may not get the exposure or play to make them gay anthems.

Hope this helps.

I can't speak to the "anthem' thing, for many reasons, but a few teasingly coy, homoerotic verses come to mind:

"Have U ever wanted to play with someone so much you'd take anyone, boy or girl" - Annastesia

"I can b a girl or boy, i can b your toy" - We Can Funk

"Make him man enough to say he's 50/50 girl" - Arrogance

It's funny, most gay folks I know don't care for Prince much - then again, most of my straight friends don't either.

I don't recall Judy Garland ever employing the services of Junior Vasquez. smile
