Essence

Contains my least favourite Prince track "Solo", aside from that one there's plenty to be enjoyed, as is the case with all his albums IMO...

Get it Get it Get it Get it.

It's a great album. It has a weird vibe, very lonely and
hostile, but also very full and warm. I don't know, you
have to hear it to understand. "Pheromone" on headphones
makes for a true vintage Prince moment. The wall of synth
that rises and ebbs away like a sea behind the chorus is
phenomenal. I always missed it on regular radio but with
headphones you can hear it, it's burried deep and it's
real thick and wet but it's there. And it sounds magical,
the "Mountains" kind of magic.

Argh. Just get the album. It's worth the money.

The title track to Come is one of his funkiest jams of the 90's, especially the flourish in the last 2 minutes. "Dark" is a sparse, lush ballad. "Letitgo" is a nice single.

Space: Universal Love Remix is BRILLIANT.

The horn work on the LP is amazing.

for me this is an odd album - I didn't really like the album when it came out, but I love all of the songs excpet Solo (Orgasm isn't a song). Come, Space, Phermone, Loose!, Race, Dark, and Letitgo are all great, as are the remixes (like 18 and Over) - Dark has some really great vocal work. I supposed Solo is great vocally too - but it is easily my least favorite Prince song - the only Prince song I erased from my iTunes.

I greatly enjoy the song, Solo. When I hear it I immediately think of The Psalms of King David in the Bible. It's haunting and beautiful. Melodic. Very modal.

Oh I forgot something...I still have the old 45 rpm for the song, Jungle Fever by The Chakachas. I also have it on a CD. If you can find it check it out. The songs, Come and Orgasm taken together put me in mind of Jungle Fever, and Jungle Fever was done years ago. The melody and rhythm are nothing alike. It's the "subject matter". lol

Come is not that good as a complete album, but is a nice collection of songs from that period.

I hardly ever listen to Solo and of course Orgasm, but both are interesting in a way. Solo is nice to let people listen to, when they doubt his vocal performance. Orgasm is nice because it consists of the two earlier mentioned samples.

When you like the album, make sure you get the singles as well. There are great remixes of Space (with totally different lyrics) and there is the hard to find remix of Letitgo with Dorothy Parker.
In the non-remix CDsingle of Letitgo, you can find the great instrumental Alexa De Paris...an absolute must-have...

Orgasm is like Wedding Feast. Not a real song, not a real interlude, not a real segue, not a real big deal.
