Am I the only one who does not want Prince to return to his dirtier lyrics? It seems like most of us here on the org want Prince to return to his 80s styled lyrics which were a lot about dirty sex, but hell, that's how P got famous. I for one, cannot stand Prince's squeaky clean lyrics, but damn, I don't want to hear a 54 year old man talk about rape(unless its an anti+rape activism song XD), vibrators and kinky sex. I can give 2 shits about swears and talking about sex in general in his songs, its odd for a 54 year old man to sing the kind of stuff he sang in Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999 era songs. Just got bored, so I decided to put up this little thread together lol. What do y'all think?

I dont.
Bu really how many songs does he have where he is actually saying something vulgar? Not many.
But ya know how he changed up Gotta Broken Heart Again form Dirty Mind on the Alladin Vegas dvd and from then on..and how he slow groove the ICNTTPOYM?
what if did that to Sister?

On another thread, that started yesterday (so, do we really need another?) I said:
He's still nasty anyway, it's silly when he pretends he's not... Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I agree, dj. the bikini briefs can go, and even some of the more "profane language", however one of the things that made Prince appealing was my ability to identify with his struggle between good/bad, right/wrong, etc. Just cut loose and sing the lyrics to "Housequake" eighties style every now and then. When he's done with that, he can let go with "Do Me Baby", and then 'do me after school like some homework'... My husband won't mind a bit. Does anybody know bout the 'quake? BULLSHIT!!!

censorship is ruin those songs..
I want the nasty rude Prince back, for a lot of reasons....
the nasty Prince was so much better..

This. Im sure some of us have been saying this at various points since the late 90s.
Its one of those thing where the fans outrage about him not being "dirty" anymore is disproportionate to the actual amount of dirt.

Yes. You are the only one. 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

No you are not the only one. To me that has something to do with maturity. It was cool back then, but I really don't need to hear some of that stuff now. He can be sexy and sensual - things like when he performed "Gingerbread Man", and "Little Red Corvette" (incl laying on the piano) - which is certainly something I also love about Prince, but he must not be rude (as in some of his very early songs).

Prince is at an all new level of sexiness where he doesn't have to be pervert or use foul language to be sexy. 3121 has Black Sweat, Te amo Corazon, The Word, Incensce and Candles, satisfied. All very sexual songs that use mild inuendo and no vulgar language. P has grown up and it's good that he has. But we all still wanna hear head and erotic city. But i guess we don't need to hear Sister or Pussy Control.

I prefere his 1980's naughtiness over his 1990's dirtiness,
A lot of Prince's 'dirtier' lyrics were much more subdued even when outright covered in symbolism,
Tamborine would be considered a naughty song, but it's definately not obvious
If you really look back through those 1980's albums they weren't even close to being as 'religious' or 'dirty' as people tend to paint that period
Look at the Purple Rain album, outside of the subject of Darling Nikki (please don't think masturbate is a bad or dirty word) Purple Rain is hardly an album with a whole lot of sexual or foul language
Around the World in a Day, same thing, Tamborine is very much covered, and Tempation a song about sex, again 'fingers in the pool go splash we must' is very much poetic that raunchy or dirty
Parade, nothing there either outsided of spelling in very muted tones P U SS Y, is a non religious and definately not dirty album
What was dirty about Sign o the Times? What was dirty about Lovesexy?
a few curse words here and there? maybe, but the 1980's stuff is hardly
| |

Prince was doing that in the 1980's
Tamborine New Position I Wonder U
I still don't hear a bunch of vulgar or swear words in his 1980's releases, like you will hear in his 1990's
Sister Head Uptown Darling Nikki are story situations just like Bambi all would be have a warning of 'Adult Situations' if they were a tv movie
I agree though if I never hear Pussy Control again, I would survive
I surprised he hasn't just changed 'fuck' 2 'love' and performed Erotic City, because nothing outside of that is vulgar
Little Red Corvette is another sexual situation song that he still sings, Cream Let's Work is 100% about sex with the cover of it being about Dancing (love dancing)

I totally agree,
his onstage similuations added to a song may have made tame songs more sexual in people minds

prince sounds like joey from friends in his lyrics now
like "it's tight but i can fit u in" .. get it? get it? .. yes joey we get it .. now just go back to singing "head" cuz it was way cooler sounding than these stoopid 4th grade inuendos that go nowhere
the "mutherfuckers" of the gold era can go .. songs like "spirituality" and "the christ" can hit the garbage disposal too
just give me something sincere .. and if that involves lust or being horny than great .. the lyrics prince puts out about sex these days make me wonder if he can even get it up anymore

about the 80's / the nasty Prince:
Sugar Walls: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ugar_Walls
"Sugar Walls" is the second single from Sheena Easton's 1984 album A Private Heaven that spent 9 weeks on the pop chart. A top ten hit in the United States on both the pop (#9) and R&B (#3) charts, the song was composed by Prince, utilizing the pseudonym "Alexander Nevermind". The song failed to chart well in her native UK.
Wow:
The song title is presumed to refer to the "walls" of the vagina, which was perhaps sufficiently subtle by itself, but the general content was considered suggestive enough to qualify the song for the "Filthy Fifteen." Although Easton's video clip for "Sugar Walls" did not in itself feature any controversial content, some music-video broadcasters refused the video airplay because of the sexual imagery of the song's lyrics. Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart constantly criticized the song on his television program when it was first released.
Just in case you don't know already:
the filthy fifteen: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...en#Actions
Actions As a method of combating this alleged problem, the PMRC suggested a voluntary move by the RIAA and the music industry to develop "guidelines and/or a rating system" similar to the MPAA film rating system. Additional suggestions from the PMRC that appeared in an article in the Washington Post included: printing warnings and lyrics on album covers, forcing record stores to put albums with explicit covers under the counters, pressuring television stations not to broadcast explicit songs or videos, "reassess[ing]" the contracts of musicians who performed violently or sexually in concert, and creating a panel to set industry standards. This article led to the removal of rock music and magazines from American stores including Wal-Mart, J. C. Penney, Sears and Fred Meyer. The PMRC also released the "Filthy Fifteen", a list of the 15 songs they found most objectionable:

In the 1st 3 albums, no talk of "spirituality or religion" No vulgar language or curse words till Dirty Mind and only on 2 songs the use of motherfucker(Sister) damn(Party Up) very poetic creative talk of sex/sexual actions, nothing raunchy (till the 3rd album) the subject of Dirty Mind is obvious but it's not an overal porno album or raunchy album. *when I first heard it back then, I was expecting a lot more, it was more tame that I expected, even the title track isn't something he couldn't sing today I think some of the song titles are more erotic or suggestive that the actual lyrics
For You Ever since I met U baby, I've been wantin' 2 lay U down
Hey lover, I've got a sugarcane And all I wanna hear is your sweet love sighs And U're just as wet as the evening rain
Just As Long As We're Together
I wanna be the only one that makes U come... runnin'!
Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? When We're Dancing Close And Slow Dirty Mind
It's just like a train
And U said - "I'm just a virgin and I'm on my way 2 be wed
Head till U're burnin' up
U wouldn't have stopped but ah...
I was only 16 but I guess that's no excuse
My sister never made love 2 anyone else but me
She only wanted 2 turn me out
We don't give a damn, we just wanna jam

the thing about Darling Nikki, is really overblown
the word masturbating was used (how he met Nikki) the rest of the songs suggests a S&M scene (nothing new to Prince songs) But that is never brought up in this case, it seems to be just about that word

I could care less if he gets nasty again because it's not his lyrics that's suffering these days, it's the sound of his music. But there's no such thing as being too old to be nasty. Hell, that's what makes old people seem dull and stuffy when they get too saddity to be nasty. I know I'll be a dirty old man till I'm a dead old man. Filthy as hell! Just look at "The Golden Girls", those old ladies would have been dull as hell if they didn't sit around talking nasty shit.

right, I like to see people as they get older remain the same in all the good healthy ways, just get better at it, learn play parties, celebrate dress up and step out on town, flirt dance etc

That's right. And if old people didn't remain nasty, they would have never invented Viagara. Andy is a four letter word.

again, these 2 albums not filled with curse words and 99% of the 'dirtier' lyrics are more artistic and creatively covered than anything outside of the ending of Do Me Baby Lady Cab Driver & International Lovers simulated sex, which is pulled off very well, not the assumed 'nastiness'
Controversy Oh, U ain't leaving me no choice Well, isn't it supposed 2 take a long time? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over
If U're tired of the masturbator

lol true old doesn't have to mean looking & acting prepared for death
It's funny how people want Prince as some puritan, like they just became fans a few years ago why be a Prince fan if you didn't like what he was singing about 1/2 the time the 1978-1988 period is what made Prince, defined him, people can say what they want but we are here because of that period, it's the foundation of everything Prince will and would do afterwards
If anyone really thinks Prince can't sing Head or Darling Nikki, it's because they are projecting, I'm not saying he has too, but he can and it not be out of character or context. A lot of songs like Darling Nikki, Uptown etc are reciting a story, an event, and isn't that part of what songwriters and entertainers do? relate life events and stories

If you look at the whole of both of these projects including Bsides/Long versions Around the World in a Day has more risque expressions too it, Purple Rain is very tame in comparison:Darling Nikki & Erotic City
Around the World in a Day:Tamborine, Tempation, Girl No curse words/vulgarity in lyrics at all
Let's Go Crazy She just picked up the phone, dropped it on the floor
I knew a girl named Nikki, I guess U could say she was a sex fiend She had so many devices, everything that money could buy
Around the World in a Day Paisley Park Condition of the Heart Raspberry Beret Tamborine Falling in love with the face in a magazine (uh oh, not again) America Pop Life the Ladder Tempation Temptation Pop go mama when daddy gets a little 2 much

I love the more subtle with his dirty Prince of the '80s. I almost didn't recognize the more vulgar Prince of the '90s. I think ole boy still got an identity crisis but it seems little by little he's returned to that subtleness that defined him 30 years ago. To some degree.

It was never about the swear words, it was about the attitude and message he was conveying with them at the time. He can say the sames things (and has) without them.
