I think it's just called 'Play' ?
Any way, I kind of think it's meh. Like musical masturbation, I don't see the point. In the studio, nothing to do, kind of bored, let's put something down - that's what I hear from these kind of tracks.

One of my least favourite tracks, never liked it. Always used to remind me of something someone would make up on the spot on 'Who's line is it Anyway?' [Edited 1/9/13 15:04pm] blah blah blah

100% CORRECT, i don't mind it but I agree it's not particularly inspired.

I like it because it's one of the few tracks of his that's acoustically driven

I know it's just a kind of throwaway track (and not without some merit), but this thread made me think of how once Prince had Paisley Park he was doing a lot of recording without much direction. Not just that he'd cloistered himself up there, but also that he'd bought this giant mutli-million dollar studio complex, so he probably felt the need to use it, even after the initial excitement of having it wore off.
Play is one of those Larabee Studio tracks right? So I don't really mean this track specifically - just this 88-90 period in general. The sound of the stuff recorded got so stripped down and very electronic again - not a bad thing in itself, but there seemed very few musical ideas on display in a lot of similar sounding songs. Sketches more than complete songs, even though they were finished or released as such. Was it a case of just keep recording and see what comes out, rather than waiting for inspiration to hit, just keep chiseling away to see if anything good comes about without initially knowing what he's looking for in a song or project?

Nay.
It's better than some of the other outtakes from the period ("Well Done", "I Wonder" etc.), but it was creatively speaking a rather dry period. That's not to say there isn't good stuff on the albums that were released at the time, but the outtakes we've heard from the era suggest that's pretty much all the good stuff that he was able to come up with then (compared to the huge number of good / great songs per year he was able to come up with in the mid-80s). I think he just got a bit lost when he had to abandon his original set of tools and try to move away from the 1980s sound.
