this is the funkiest Prince tribute song that Ive ever heard.....

I first discovered this video after seeing Roger & Zapp unsung and downloaded it on dailymotion and Ive been hooked on this funk since 2009 and I have to say that Prince had to have been feeling this when it first came out and Roger did Prince's style up with this one.

Adorecream

Its prettyy cool, and its definetly one of their best.

But I think its more Morris Day and the Time type feels, the flying V guitars and voicebox also make it a truly Zapp original. Homage to the Minneapolis sound definitely.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

It doesn't sound anything like Prince IMO
But Roger & Zapp are cool, I like their stuff
Did he ever record without the vocoder?

Sounds like a Prince tribute to me. I've heard quite some Troutman songs, and this is true Troutman, but heavily influenced by the Minneapolis sound. He is more commonly known for the talkbox btw, than the vocoder.

Looks like more than semi-parody, especially the guitar bit and the "fonky face" + purple jacket....
Great song, tho either way.

Roger used a talkbox, not a vocoder. And yeah, he did sometimes record without it.

This is one of my favorite Roger jams where he's not exclusively using the talkbox.

DAMN! That studio version is really really like Prince!

They directly lifted a number of signature P sounds, chants, licks and hooks! Well done!

Why has this song never surfaced previously?

this song surfaced on my thread for the new Zapp 4 U full lp masterpiece thread. back in the day in 1985/1986, my mom's side of the family used to wear this cassette out around the house and I even remember my dad having the cassette in the car and my mom & uncle loved computer love. my uncle mike just bought the cd yesterday and when I rolled up, he was listening to it doesnt really matter because this album had an edge to it. Listen to Ja Ready to Rock and thats another great tribute to Prince. someone on amazon quoted that this lp is one of the best albums ever recorded in the 80's and they were on point because this lp had its following. The beat for Ja Ready to Rock is so thumping that when I have a chance to put the needle on the vinyl, I turn it up at full maximum volume where you can feel the bass and tremble especially towards the end. I mean the beat was getting funky towards the end and it faded at the best part. take a listen and see......

here is the thread:

http://prince.org/msg/8/388405

by the way, I just requested for peach & black to do a podcast album review since this album does have two of the funkiest Prince tribute songs "itching for your twitching" and "Ja Ready to Rock" ever laid to an original reel to reel master tape.

Prince and Roger Troutman toured together briefly in the early 80s. Controversy tour, I believe.

Wasn't it Roger that did a song where he shouted Prince out?

"Do you really know what love is?"

Ive talked with two people that saw the Controversy tour lineup when he toured with Prince and it was Roger & Zapp, The Time and then Prince. I was told that there were screaming fans all over the place and even though Roger &Zapp are completely different from Prince, the audience was very diverse and black as well as white people were in the audience and that had to have been 1981/1982. I was also told by another source that Roger & Zapp stole the show when they toured with rick james and lakeside and Roger had this skit part of the show where he ran around the stage with nothing but swimming trunks, suspenders, and a hat that lit up the entire stage.I think they showed a short clip of this during Roger & Zapp unsung. Yes....on the song " it doesnt really matter", Roger sings, " Thank YOU Prince cuz you so good to me".

It sounds like Prince was even a Roger and Zapp fan himself.....

Hello SDF,
i was wondering if people here on SDF are into Roger Troutman and the Band ZAPP. As for me they were on of the Funkiest acts in the '80th.
I remember Prince coming to our Club in 1987, he passed me a list with Artists that he wanted to hear that night. Guess what, ZAPP was on top of the list! He even danced to the ZAPP music.
I still remember very well the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Album, 'More Bounce' 'Brand New Player', 'I can make you dance', 'Come on' 'Heartbreaker' 'It doesn't really matter' all those tracks could fill the dancefloor in a second. I saw ZAPP live in the beginning of the '90 and the Show was phenomenal.

Roger sure gotta around ...

"Roger Troutman, who lived 24 years in the Dayton area, left 6 sons: Roger Lynch (January 31, 1970 - January 22, 2003), Larry Gates, Lester Gates, Brent Lynch, Ryan Stevens and Taji J. Troutman; 5 daughters, Daun Shazier, Hope Shazier, Summer Gates, Mia Paris Collins, Gene Nicole Anderson;"

"Papa was a Rollin Stone"... is that a song or a lyric in a song? (classic song or lyric that is)

Nice Zapp song with visually mixing the hip Prince like things.

Although I must say that I find his 'Larry Graham Streched Leg Dance' quite forseeing in this case
