Emancipation - Bargain for UK Fans

(Sorry if this has been posted already)

Just to let you know that I saw Emancipation on CD for £3.99 (GBP) in HMVs sale. That works out at just over 11p per track. I very nearly bought it as a back-up copy but my girlfriend talked me out of it.

This was in the Braehead (Glasgow) branch but I'm sure it must be available in other stores in the UK.

Get buying ...

I always have mixed feelings about those Prince bargains.

On one side it is more accessable for non-fans to pick up a copy and get to know the music.music
On the other hand, it always seems to me then, that his music has no value anymore. It's worth close to nothing...sad

Agreed - I couldn't believe that they'd have a 3 CD set by ANY artist (much less Prince) at this sort of price.

But if it gets more fans on board, it is a good thing.

Close to nothing from a commercial point of view. It's still an excellent document of Prince's work. It didn't sell for a number of reasons but not solely due to the quality of the music.

Absolutely - there was next to no promotion in the UK and to be honest I think a lot of people who otherwise might have bought a Prince album were put off by the three disk set and the price...not to mention the cover.

Prince understandably wanted it to be a hit album but you cannot price any album like that and expect it to sell beyond fans. The only slight possibility would be to have a string of 4-5 hit singles and have a strong marketing campaign. Again, that didn't happen for a number of reasons.

They'd have to pay me to take it away for it to be a bargain !! I think I only like 1 or 2 songs on each CD !!!

I like less than that! I thought In the bed I scream was OK, definatly not a classic. I used to have Emancipation but I don't miss it at all. I don't want to waste £3.99 on a pile of shit, I can buy great CD's cheaper from my Second hand record shop (like Bjork and The Doors' debuts for £2.99 each).

I also feel sorry for anyone who buys it and doesn't know much about Prince, because it will ruin their perception of him forever.

I think word of mouth sunk Emancipation in the UK. I remember getting it the first day and spending a couple of days listening to it and thinking damn this pretty awful. I know a few of my friends borrowed it from me and said it wasn't worth buying. Even that guy at the local indie record store said he had a hard time being honest and recommending it as a purchase to people even though it was his job to sell the damn thing. Remember the pre hype for starters. Prince is free, a triple Cd set. Even those who had abandoned him raised an ear but the average reviews sank it. In all it was a massive disappointment simple as that.

Yea, it may be mediocre at best (IMO of course), but for £3.99, you can't go wrong. Heck of alot better than paying £30+ when it first came out.
