And don't any of you read the liner notes?!! Prince states that Poom Poom is just a throwaway jam "never intended for any album - just a song to make a female laugh"!

And there is NO production quality on Cloreen Baconskin as it was just a warm-up jam to get Morris Day "in the pocket" and get a tight-assed, funky beat going. Its not a song per se, its all improvised and is basically a rare insight in to Prince rehearsing in the studio!

So, that's all these are, just a sneak view in to how Prince works and showing that he just has jams all over the place. Poom poom is excellent just for that fact that he can record something like that and afford to just leave it in the vault. A lot of artists can struggle to get enough tunes for an album - Prince can either just keep recording or sift through volumes of a back catalogue!

Exactly! I enjoy Cloreen Baconskin because it is insight to Prince's studio process. Baconskin is a window to how he creates new beats. In the liner notes it says Morris and Prince were working on "What Time is it?". I don't judge Baconskin or Poom Poom as like I judge regular studio tracks. I see them as a picture of how much fun P has making music.

My wife likes Poom Poom too. It makes her laugh. She likes for me to play Tamborine, Tick Tick Bang, and Poom Poom together.

And then it made me think... WHY?? why inflict this crap upon the world on CB, with so much other great stuff locked in The Vault?? I mean, why not Rebirth of the Flesh or Train or maybe one of the 80's remixes (Kiss, Love or Money, etc). And then there's the fact that each disc is only 50 minutes long... why? to what purpose? 75 minutes of space wasted, over 3 CDs.

.

Great point! Think of all the Prince songs of the eighties and how there is practically no throw away song on any album until "Graffiti (sp?) Bridge".

You're on point again saying that there are many jewels in the Vault. Of course, you could search for a "boot" of anything you want to hear, but other songs would have really "sold" Crystal Ball to a mainstream audience. For instance, think how much better CB would have been with songs such as "Good Man"( which is utterly FUNKY), "Empty Room", "Electric Intercourse", "Moonbeam Levels", "Others Here With Us", "The Grand Progression", etc.

I don't know...I think Prince knows that he can pass crap onto people because we are so "insatiable" for his music...we always want more, more, MORE...but why give us "throwaways"?

Just some thoughts...

I think Prince just wants to get his music out - he knows not everyone will like it. Are you seriously suggesting that Prince sits in his studio, rubbing his hands together like some old Scrooge thinking, "Yup, this might be a pile of shit, but I know they're gonna buy it!".

Seriously, some people just read far too much in to what goes on either behind the scenes or in the man's mind. I'm in a band, we make music, we hope people will like it, we try and sell our albums - THATS IT!!! We don't sit there and think, this track ain't up to scratch, but we'll save it and see if we can get some fool to buy it!

I have a question about Poom Poom though, and I'm pretty sure any of our American friends can answer this. He sings the lyric "Licqorice (sp?) and Golden Seal is all I ate" - what is Golden Seal?

. Golden Seal in the UK (and, quite possibly, elswhere) is a certain type of Hashish!!!

I always thought Golden Seal was some type of herbal supplement, but I may be wrong.

I'm not completely sure but I believe MinneapolisGenius is right, Golden Seal is an herbal supplement. I've heard it has some cleansing properties. People use it when they have colds (not sure if it boosts the immune system or just flushes the cold out faster), and they use it to cleanse their systems to pass drug tests (that was back in the day, may not work anymore). Somebody tell me if I'm totally wrong here smile

No need to freakin' attack me, dude. Sometimes, I do think that Prince makes songs that are mediocre and places them on a solid album because he knows people will buy it. This is just my opinion...it ain't Bible and may not be true for you...So don't jump on me about reading too much into "shit". I was just discussing...that's what we do here.

All that we create is not gonna be loved by everyone. We are all individuals and have separate opinions about everything that Prince has done. To stay on topic, I don't like "Poom, Poom" and I do still believe that CB would have been better with other Vault songs...that's the only point I was trying to make. And yes, Jughead is crap, too, put on a solid album as "filler". This ain't Bible, it's just my opinion.

I know, its ok and its cool - that really was not an attack and I'm sorry if you felt it was - no hard feelings eh?

Maybe I'm just a little (or a lot!!) forthright, but certainly not attacking, unless defensively!

Anways, I still disagree - ask yourself why he would do that? If he has strong material, why insert crap? I think the answer is that he likes the tune himself! It is often said that Prince needs someone else as an editor, but there is nothing wrong with an artist liking his own stuff. If he didn't, none of it would see the light of day.

It's very cool wink And you're right...I'm sure he doesn't "knowingly" produce "filler" and "throwaways". I have an appetite for his music and I'd buy it anyway...Heck, I bought "Rave" smile Having this appetite means that I will buy it and press "skip" if I have to.

I think "Poom Poom" being released gets back to the sentiments that Prince expressed on Larry King: ...that as soon as he's made any song, "It's a 'success' right there'"

I'm not convinced that Prince himself thinks "PoomPoom" is crap. I get the feeling that over the years he's come to believe that ALL his creations are "successes", and his self-pimping comments about being a "modern-day Mozart" in the D&P video.

I think he saw "Poom Poom" as worthy of release as "Crucial", or "Calhoun Square". To him, they're all successes.

Arrogance? Self-delusion?

All I know is, if I had created all those awsome songs in the vault, there's NO WAY I would release "Poom Poom" on one of my cd's to repersent ME. I would be too embarassed.

I kind of wonder if the girl who "laughed" at "Poom Poom" laughed AT "Poom Poom", or WITH "Poom Poom"?
***

p.s.- my creepiest "Poom Poom" memory was Prince's outdoor concert performance on the Today Show in 1998 with Larry Graham & Chaka Khan promo-ing the "Newpower Pak" set. During the performances there was this weird super-skinny kid by the stage holding up a BIG plackard with, in BIG black letters POOM POOM! 99% of America probably said to themselves "What the hell is Poom Poom?"What the hey would motivate a kid to make that sign? He must have been one hell of a POOM POOM fan,. So there's DEFINITELY one!

Would that be the same guy who showed up other places holding up a POOM POOM sign? I can't imagine there'd be more than one person going around doing that! lol He must really love that song!

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing him on Minneapolis news (KMSP) a few years ago when they did a story on the 1st Celebration and showed people waiting line out at PP.

Some Prince fans around here need to get a sense of humor. Not everything the man releases has to change the world musically. Occasionally, a fun, funny, no-nonsense song like Poom Poom should be made and by golly, I will enjoy it!

"weird"!..."super-skinny"! Do I know you...or better yet, do you know me? I'm sure I don't remember talking to you (unless you were the girl from connecticut) so how can you say I'm weird or not? Suddenly having a good time at a free Prince show in NYC with your mates is weird...yeah, I'm weird then! Poom Poom became kind of a joke for me and my friends so I brought it to almost every show. We had a bet that if I brought the sign to as many shows as i went to, Prince would finally play it for me. I lost the bet, cuz he never played it at a show I was at. Ain't that a b@*#h!
