Another Lonely Christmas (tis the season) For all the seasonal emotionally damaged.
Only Prince would come up with a Xmas song about death! Flipping the script on xmas carols LOL!But its still beautiful--thats the kicker...eff a ding dong xmas bells are ringing! He's saying .."now look yall..my true love that I grew up with died on xmas day ...shit like this happens! Wrote a song about it..wanna hear it? Here it go"... this song is one of the reasons I love Prince and am man enough to say it.
However it is obviously and admittedly a work of fiction. I was upset whe he revelaed that the story was fiction..I mean Ive always known in the back of my head that he didnt know anyone who died on Xmas or Xmas eve etc but he ddidn't have to say it lol. It's cool that he is able to write with such conviction that you sort of believe there was a lonely Xmas, a Nikki, a Dorothy Parker (his version) etc. He is like..a method actor of music in that aspect imo.
I think this song is one of his top ten vocals ..the passion and or anguish in it makes my gut hurt.
Remember we played pokeno for money, and ya robbed me blind?
The delivery is so painful and passionate. Prince was in a vibe on this one.

Right on dude. This song is one of my favorite songs of his! I remember falling in love with it in the middle of the summer this year, then rediscovering it when I heard Dumps cover of it. (Dump covered a bunch of Prince songs on a collection called "That Skinny Mother Fucker With The High Voice"). You're right, with the cold air, the dying plants, and the night sky, all working together at once, you get one of Prince's best and most passionate songs. Purple is the color of my heart,
Bruised from you leaving me.

Gorgeous song. I haven't heard it for ages but I've played it to death over the years. Love the sound of that piano and the vocals over it are red hot, not rod hull.
You sure about those lyrics though? I just tried to look em up quick but couldn't find anything definitive. I'm half akip and it's gone 6 in the morning so prolly not the best time to post but just from singing it in my head I thought it was "Remember that night we played for keepable money and you robbed me blind"... Bleedin pokemon.
What was it the sister got up to though?
"Hey I saw your sister skatin on the lake, this afternoon. Good Heaven huh, she's broke? She ??? the ??? skate and she slipped over..." or
"Hey I saw your sister skatin on the lake, this afternoon. Good Heaven how she's grown? She ??? the ??? skate and she's so tall..."
P.S. That poxy cover version has the right name. They fuckin DUMP on it alright. grrrr...

The 'Pokeno' line is correct...
The other line you mentioned is:
"Hey I saw your sister skatin' on the lake, this afternoon Good Heaven how she's grown: she swoons the boy skaters she's so tall"
- Love that song. I remember getting the 12" of I Would Die 4U in '84 and listening to that (I was 15) and thinking that it was really someone he knew.
Good Times. [Edited 12/3/12 4:36am]

I'm still not convinced about the pokeno thing. The other line makes some sense though, cheers.
I got that 12" too. No picture cover but hey ho.

totally agree with U
Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Remember the time we swam naked in your father's pool
Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Do U still like banana daiquiris? Cuz U see, last night I spent another lonely Christmas
My mama used 2 say always trust your lover
Oh baby, last night, oh, I spent another lonely, lonely Christmas
Your father said it was pneumonia
Last night, yeah, I spent another lonely, lonely Christmas
Another lonely.... | |

I listened to a few versions this morning. When I looked for the lyrics earlier I came up with the same as OldFiends posted but I didn't think they were right.
I'll take everyones word for it and thank RodHull for making me dig it out. Lovely tune.

I've always loved the reverb he put on this, too. It sounds like his voice is echoing through the empty rooms of his soul - and into space so that, on a cold, still Christmas, she might hear him from heaven. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Like it was recorded at 2 a.m. too...and it was ina cold dark studio. "Climb in my fur."

Pretty cool song. Initially I thought it was too over the top, but it definitely grew on me. You either got go with the emotion or just leave it alone.

Yes, great song.
I love the extended version a lot.
I can't wait for a re-issue of the Purple Rain album,
incl. the ext. versions, outtakes & B-sides.
What a nice christmas present that could be.... (Still dreaming). Prince 4Ever.

Behind a dark dark door, with snow outside and tinsel stuffed down his undies. Nipple clamps with Christmas baubles attached to his nutsack and red candles on top of the piano, flickering in the cool, night, air. Oh what an atmosphere, I love a party with a happy atmosphere.

I find with a lot of Prince fans, especially those of the 1978-1989 years
there are things, like what you 2 have said, that others are thinking and feeling at the same time
time of day/night, temperature, colors, places & spaces

Thats the dumbest move ever. He doesnt allow videos that ar elegal and offical and already released decades ago to be shown or he will sue.
Its ridiculous. Frankenberry, takk to our boy please: dont..be...scared.
Here's what I would do if I had the chance ...lets say when disucssing Andy Allo cd:
"Yes, the cd is nice and with some unexpected sounds. The production seems different from what we are used to hearing from you. Aye..when you going to stop that video embargo, it's not making sense Kid." "Climb in my fur."

it seems sometimes that 'fantasy' songs may have some truth
something about seeing the movie Purple Rain helped give images that assist in having a visual of songs during that 1980's period
