you KNOW that she means "gay" in the sense of "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style", now, don't you?

i'm sure he knows that she means that, but it still doesn't make it any less offensive to people who are gay... regardless of whether you mean to or not, anytime you use this word to mean "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style" it is still equating homosexual people with something negative...

it's just like the fad of saying that something is straight... it takes the whole thing one step further...

"how you doin' man?"
"aw, ya know, i'm straight."

or if you're making a sandwich or something for someone... "you want anything else on that?" "naw man, that's straight."

so now, not only is something "gay" if it's bad, but something is "straight" if it's good...

disbelief

i'm not calling out you specifically for this... this is in response to everyone who uses these terms in this manner (which is really an overwhelming amount of people)...

i think it's something that most people don't think about because they don't actually know or hang out with any gay people...

it didn't really occur to me that saying something was "gay" or "straight" made that much of an impact on someone until i had friends who were gay and i heard them bitching about it... and it makes complete sense... it's really hard for me to believe that people could make any argument to the contrary... it's just another way that society is able to keep a minority down...

yes, thank you for typing all of this out. i was going to until i saw you already had. this is really a big pet peeve of mine. it's almost easier to hear someone call you a "fag" than to hear this kind of thing, because at least you know what the person who calls you a fag is thinking (and they know what they're thinking too). people who go around using "gay" to describe something that's "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style" don't even know they're ignorant.

I totally agree.

Popcorn - what is it with you?

This is a public forum where people express their opinions, some positive, some negative - that way, we learn things rather than everyone agreeing that everything is wonderful!

Someone decided to post that they think this track is genius - I, and many others, disagreed and posted comments to that effect. Nobody was abusive or impolite until you came along. For some reason, you took my post in particular to be offensive, out of all the ones that were "negative" and called me an "idiot" - very pleasant!

However, you didn't stop there - you then berate me for merely expressing an opinion, calling me an idiot twice again, supported with what is an inconsistent argument and then proceed to show a cartoon of someone, me, getting flattened - did you ask forgiveness from God for that??!!

You introduced this feverish tone to what was otherise a fairly normal, polite debate.

You now say " to me they (the idiots, ie me) are the ones that try to turn something positive into something negative " - all I did was express my disagreement (or disagreeance, if you're Fred Durst!), along with many others.

You also say "And yes I for one choose to like everything that has been put out by Prince because One man created it all" - well, if that is your yard-stick for what you perceive to be quality music in your mind then, fine, more power to you. I just perceive it differently to you.

"Like a Preacher's sermon on a Sunday morning, not everyone in the congregation will get each and every single message because that particular sermon is not speaking to them at that particular time" - but, this isn't the case here. I understand the lyrical content of the song and it's a positive message, but I don't like the music, the production. As I stated, as with almost any tune of his, there is something to love, a snippet of genius, because of the talent he is.

"Can't u see all the talk about "Prince is Brilliant but I know he can do better" is just so tired!" - erm, no - for reasons already stated and for the fact that he can't get any better, he is what he is! And I'm not saying that he should get better either! I happen to love his current muscial output, but not EVERYTHING the man has ever done is great, he just has had more moments than most!

"You call my respect for Prince "a cocksucker" lol." - actually, if you recall, I was merely mimicing the dis-respect that YOU brought to this thread.

Maybe next time you should try and consider both the tone and content of your response before you post it - you know, you can't just go around breaking glasses all the time in the knowledge you can try and clean up afterwards. Remember that everyone's opinon is important - even if you disagree with it and that everyone deserves respect!

actually, i have a couple of friends who are gay and DON'T mind, in fact one of them uses the word "gay" in the same way. I think that it actually is not putting down homos at all wink it is used in the sense of it's original meaning: "happy"...like the song "graffiti bridge"...it doesn't sound PARTICULARLY homosexual, though perhaps a little camp...mainly it justs sounds overtly happy, hence GAY.

I wish to argue this point no further because it is up to the individual and myself and my girlfriend have nothing against gay people. gay people are great.
