Right the Wrong and Jughead are tied. Jughead is a worse song and has the 'get stupid' line, but Right the Wrong is performed with a COUNTRY ACCENT and for that Prince deserves whatever his wrathful god should see fit to dish up.

I just played "Right the Wrong" to my girlfriend for the first time, then "Graffiti Bridge" (the song).

And she looked at me during both songs as if she was very bored and wanted me to die...BUT!

She did say that "at least the first one was funky" and she seemed to like the "ow-wa!" bit.

She said "Graffiti Bridge" was incredibly gay.

Verdict: Right the Wrong is certainly NOT his worst song (at least according to my girfriend, a casual Prince fan).

Incredibly gay? How is it that the Breeders love to use that adjective??
[This message was edited Thu Mar 6 19:55:54 PST 2003 by EverlastingNow]

er, I don't know how it is that the Breeder's like to use that adjective. Do you mean my girlfriend is ripping them off or something? what a strange thing to say.

No I just mean that it's a really stupid way to discribe something or someone. So your girlfriend is not ripping them off, she just has a limited vocabulary, THAT'S what I was saying.

How could u know it's limited? U have no idea from how many words she chose that one. What a ridiculous, hilarious thing to say.

Some people...

To say an inanimate object, or in this case a song, is 'gay', suggests it features certain qualities (or lack thereof), which are socially understood.

If I said my tennis shoes were really gay it would make sense and would, I imagine, be widely understood and accepted.

'Gay' is often used, of course, as a put down for something. Rightly or wrongly (hmmm), this makes calling something 'gay' a very efficient way to communicate when pertaining to a dislike of something.

...hmmm (steady on nick)

So, idiots are people that disagree with someone else, hmmm?

No! to me they are the ones that try to turn something positive into something negative, and believe me I was totally wrong for calling you an Idiot and I ask for forgivness from GOD for it! ...If anyone likes anything Prince does, why try and convince them it's not what they think it is (good, Brilliant, positive, etc.)? All music is put out in Public for us to make our own choices. Why, when someone says something different than what you believe, you gotta put it down? And yes I for one choose to like everything that has been put out by Prince because One man created it all. I guess certain songs would get a bit more recognition if someone else created them. Like a Preacher's sermon on a Sunday morning, not everyone in the congregation will get each and every single message because that particular sermon is not speaking to them at that particular time. But there are some people who will get that particular message. Songs are the same way. Can't u see all the talk about "Prince is Brilliant but I know he can do better" is just so tired! No matter what is put out by the man, there was an experience that initiated the creation of that particular song. Each song is like a child born into this world with it's own unique characteristics and inner beauty. All those songs came from One man; that's where my respect comes from for him. You call my respect for Prince "a cocksucker" lol. I've been called worse for just listening to Prince's music through the years.

Well that was kind of my point that if there were so many to choose from, "gay" wrapped the song up real well? You're right I'm sure she meant happy. disbelief

Popcorn, you've said some really beautiful things here. I especially like, "Each song is like a child born into this world with it's own unique characteristics and inner beauty." That's beautiful and poetic!! I, too, love every song Prince has ever put out because, like you say, each and every song has something special - whether it's the musical arrangement, moving lyrics, great to dance to, etc. IMO, the man is a musical genius - always has been, always will be. I have no problem with anyone else's opinion because I know what works for me.

Right the wrong, baby!

aaron, you...you make me...eurgh, i can't say it. but sometimes, you really do.

you KNOW that she means "gay" in the sense of "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style", now, don't you? let's not go there with the P.C. stuff. no insult to your gayness or anyone elses. wink by the way, we both think "graffiti bridge", the song, IS kind of camp, anyway.

btw, she just looked at me that way because for her it was like, "not another substandard prince song" (even though she likes prince a lot, just not as much as i do).

now, please let's get bad to this exciting and wonderful thread about such a BRILLIANT, groundbreaking, totally NOT GAY song. wink

i'm sure he knows that she means that, but it still doesn't make it any less offensive to people who are gay... regardless of whether you mean to or not, anytime you use this word to mean "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style" it is still equating homosexual people with something negative...

it's just like the fad of saying that something is straight... it takes the whole thing one step further...

"how you doin' man?"
"aw, ya know, i'm straight."

or if you're making a sandwich or something for someone... "you want anything else on that?" "naw man, that's straight."

so now, not only is something "gay" if it's bad, but something is "straight" if it's good...

disbelief

i'm not calling out you specifically for this... this is in response to everyone who uses these terms in this manner (which is really an overwhelming amount of people)...

i think it's something that most people don't think about because they don't actually know or hang out with any gay people...

it didn't really occur to me that saying something was "gay" or "straight" made that much of an impact on someone until i had friends who were gay and i heard them bitching about it... and it makes complete sense... it's really hard for me to believe that people could make any argument to the contrary... it's just another way that society is able to keep a minority down...

yes, thank you for typing all of this out. i was going to until i saw you already had. this is really a big pet peeve of mine. it's almost easier to hear someone call you a "fag" than to hear this kind of thing, because at least you know what the person who calls you a fag is thinking (and they know what they're thinking too). people who go around using "gay" to describe something that's "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style" don't even know they're ignorant.

yes, thank you for typing all of this out. i was going to until i saw you already had. this is really a big pet peeve of mine. it's almost easier to hear someone call you a "fag" than to hear this kind of thing, because at least you know what the person who calls you a fag is thinking (and they know what they're thinking too). people who go around using "gay" to describe something that's "bad, corny, horribly devoid of substance or style" don't even know they're ignorant.

nod... it really irritates me to, because people are in denial that it is even offensive... my wife called my brother down hardcore for that... his response was, "but i'm not talking about gay people... i'm talking about that song... that is the gayest song i've ever heard..."

so, she calls him out on the fact that he is equating something bad with gay people... then he gets defensive about that and says that he using a different meaning of the word gay... then she had to explain to him that the only other official meaning of the word gay is "happy"...

he just got pissed and stopped trying... i don't think he learned anything though...
