Princefest @ ICA, London London Org-ers,
I just came across this on the ICA website, which looks kinda cool. Matt Thorne, etc.
http://www.ica.org.uk/353...efest.html
PrincefestFriday 14 - Saturday 15 December 2012 Cultural icon Prince is one of the few pop superstars whose work defies categorisation and whose life remains truly enigmatic. From Friday 14 to Saturday 15 December, we celebrate Princefest - the best of the Purple One's appearances on the big screen. This unique event also features a series of talks and live performances; the first of a brand new series of programming, assessing the cultural impact of an individual musician.
Special guest Matt Thorne, author of the recently published and definitive biography of Prince, will provide expertise and insight throughout.
The full programme will be announced shortly.
And more here:

The man behind Purple Rain and Kiss will be celebrated at Princefest, a festival at The Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London from 14-15 December. The two-day festival is made up of film screenings, talks, Q&As and music performances in homage to American musician Prince.
Author Matt Thorne will discuss his new biography of Prince on 14 December, followed by a double screening of Purple Rain - the first film Prince starred in, and Graffiti Bridge, the unofficial sequel which he wrote, directed and appeared in.
Prince karaoke will be held in the ICA’s bar, before the evening concludes with a late night screening of Sign o’ the Times, the film covering Prince’s tour of the same name in the 1980s.
The festival's second day will open with a discussion between professor Sarah Niblock and Stan Hawkins about Prince’s impact on the fashion world. Screenings of musical film Under the Cherry Moon and documentary The Prince of Paisley Park will be shown, and 19 guitarists will perform Purple Rain in the evening, as a celebration of Prince as a virtuoso musician.
Prince-themed entertainment will follow and Princefest is set to close with a screening of Barberella, a 1968 film which influenced Prince’s work.
Princefest follows the ICA’s Bowiefest festival on 31 August – 2 September, dedicated to the film career of David Bowie.

Cool idea I suppose, and a good thing for people to meet fellow Prince fans. The screening of SOTT sounds like fun. ICA is a great space too, I used to drop in there for coffee quite a lot when I lived in London.

That's what I thought.
Sounds like a nightmare to me. Prince karaoke? 19 guitarists will perform Purple Rain in the evening? Mmm, no.

The Thorne book was OK, but it is by no means a "definitive biography."

SOTT is on a bit late for me. I already saw Purple Rain singalong earlier this year at the Prince Charles Cinema and I don't fancy enduring Grafitti Bridge if I can avoid it.
I just booked for UTCM and the Fashion thing whatever it is on Saturday 15th.

This is cool. It's good to see the Purple One getting props. I wish there was more of this stuff celebrating his legacy. "I have a date with Lisa. Isn't that wonderful?"

I'm not so sure about the karaoke, but SOTT should be pretty cool...

Per Nilsen's DMSR is the definitive biog, it only goes up to 1987 though.
Alex Hahn's Possessed is a little more salacious, but he had access to the same research as Nilsen/Uptown apparently, so it makes it on the level, it goes up to just before Musicology IIRC.
There was another recent one with a purple-ish felt-like hard cover that was quite thorough too - I forget the name/author sorry - I bet someone can fill in my swish-cheese memory.

Do you mean "Chaos & Disorder" by Jason Draper? I found that pretty pedestrian.
The Matt horne book's certainly pretty detailed but considering it comes from a Prince 'fan" it seems a bit turgid, alomst lacking in passion in parts...

Prince's manager, Kiran, tweeted an hour ago "not approved" so who knows?

I completely agree. I've sent in several stories and they never get posted. Most recently, I sent in a notice about PRINCE performing on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" - nothing. The inconsistency makes no sense. We're all PRINCE fans, so the source should not matter. Who cares who sent it in? Just share it with us!

U know i've defended Prince's assholery often on this site, even made apologies for it because honestly i think many orgers are ungrateful, nostalgic, and come off as paternalistic but if dude shuts this thing down....

But that doesnt mean they have to shut down do they?
That yearly one in middle america they used to hav was the catalyst for the Celebrations imo. "Climb in my fur."

Sadly something like this would never be again done in the US. [Edited 11/27/12 13:48pm] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

If Prince shuts the ICA event down, then he should set up an agency for Prince events not sanctioned by him and either give his approval or denial. My question is: is this event really a tribute, if the guy they're paying tribute to, don't want the tribute. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR
