Good thought but...

...wasn't Chaos just a random smattering of bits and pieces that he threw together in order to make a quick escape from Warner Bros?

An orger suggested that I go back and listen to Old Friends and Chaos and Disorder. I listened to all of Old Friends, I made it through a song and a half of Chaos. I was then reminded why I only listened to this album once and put it on the shelf to collect dust. I do believe the man was trying to fulfill his contract with Warners and gave them the most absolute worst crap he could come up with.

i still maintain that this is a solid album. just not a GREAT prince album. there was a review in spin magazine at the end of the year--they said this was one of the most underrated albums of that year. they said no one this year has kicked up this much funk-rock dust in a long time. it's NOT a great prince album, but could you have pictured what the reaction to this would have been if it were beck that released this???

$.02.

I have to confess that somehow Dinner with Delores stuck in my head...in a chewing-gum-in-the-hair kind of way.

Nice sentiments but "breathtaking" is not a word I would use to describe this particular album.

"Gut wrenching" ...? Maybe, at times.

Naaa, be fair, it was breathtaking, I for one was fairly exasperated at having spent 15 quid for a contract filler album.

Eh? What are you talking about?

Chaos and Disorder - social commentary a la SOTT, just nowhere near as good!

I Like It There - average, straight-ahead "you're so sexy" type song!

Dinner With Delores - slightly humourous song about a fat, slutty girl!

The Same December - weak track following the usual themes of racial harmony and idolisation of things other than God.

Right The Wrong - truly awful track about injustice.

Zannalee - Nice "Blues on Ecstacy" vibe, but another throwaway sex-driven lyric.

I Rock, Therefore I Am - "I do waht I like, I makes my music, I gets paid"

Into The Light - begotten by God, we will return to God.

I Will - gonna keep doing what I want to do, no matter what.

Dig U Better Dead - great beat, interesting lyrics, one of the better tunes. Talks of his wrestling with himself (possibly over the release of the Black album) and having to deal with being surrounded by negativity.

Had U - quirky outro, possibly a "Fuck you" to WB and the system, or an even nastier "Fuck U" to an ex!

SO - just what exactly is there to learn? This album is both blatant lyrically and musically, his most shallow album and definitely throwaway stuff! There are no secrets. It was a contract filler. He went to Florida, if I remember correctly, to jam with the NPG and decided that the jams were just good enough to give to WB as another album.

Wanna learn something about Prince? Take ANY other album (yes, even NPS!) by him and listen to it!

I don't get you people who HATE this album so much. It is not one of his better albums but is very solid with some catchy tunes. Are you all upset because he did it with a slightly rock sound. I don't get it. If all he did weird ass stuff like NPS or TRC. NPS sounds like he went and bought himself a casio keyboard and put it on auto play. TRC which musically very very good is NOT something that would get any artist anywhere. Emancipation is another why did he bother. Too many covers, very strange artsie fartsie sounds, not enough meat. Once he decided he didn't like WB anymore he seemed to lose it and his quality went to shit. Sure he has put out so much since that time but it has all been so so. When he had WB looking over his shoulder his output was of a much higher caliber. Like I said C&D is not the pile of dung most of you seem to think it is.

Well hey what ever, there are people who love NPS, to me that album gives me the same reaction as C&D does to some of you. Too each their own, one thing is certain alt least we are all still fans. smile
