I own both the CD and the LP vinyl album, still I haven't listened to this album in years.....

why get rid of the "darth vadar" voice? rainbow children is a narrative journey as much as a musical one. there's a story being told in this album and the fact that he created a totally different other worldly voice to do it added to it's dramatic effect and cohesion.

would 1999 be the same without the darth vadar voice announcing the impending doom? or the lovesexy concerts as beautiful and psychedelic without ingrid's poetry? or if i was your girlfriend without the marriage opening?

these are the strokes of something more than a methodical, conventional musician. these are the strokes of an artist's brush, the flourishes that show he was thinking outside of the box and not playing by the rules.

I hate this album with a passion.

It was probably like the first Prince record i got into. Man its a great record but its Not one that I would show to a non Prince fan at all or even a medium PRince fan.

It seemed to me like the real continuation of what he was doing in the 80's, and that the whole 90's was a sidestep (though it had great moments)

It was like after Graffiti Bridge, he became --Diamonds & Pearls has a lot more in common with Gold than it does with Parade--and that with Rainbow Children, Prince was back. It felt like in the 90's he was trying to appeal to everyone, but with TRC he embraced being himself again, for better or worse.

I am not religious either, but that never stopped me from singing along with Anastasia's Jesus lyrics or saying the Lord's Prayer in Controversy (or countless other examples). The narration is just goofy fiction as far as I am concerned. I speak it along with Prince in the lowest voice I can manage.

I know what you mean, but my friend who is not really a fan loved the album. He is a music fan, and the music is about as good as Prince gets.

His music is like wine, it gets better over time..

a few weeks ago i listened to this album again. somehow i always mention it as

one of my top 10 prince albums but i realised i hadn't actually listened to it as a

whole in over 2 years or something.

so i dusted it off and had another listen.

and then another one. and another one.

i've never had a problem with the 'darth vader' narration or any of the sugarry

sweet stuff on it.

as i listened i had a few dozen moments where i went 'oh yes, how could i have

forgotten this? this is so amazing!'.

great album, and great musicianship.

whenever i listen to this i have to smile as i remember my hysterical fam-out on

the day i first heard it. after new power soul and rave, this came as something

of a shock. a very pleasant shock though.

i don't know what i was expecting, but it wasn't this after spending most of a

day trying to download it with my slow connection i finally got it all on my hd and

pressed play and then i just went kind of nuts, to be honest.

every twist and turn and every new song my smile just got bigger and bigger and

my faith in prince was restored, fully.

he was on fire at this period. the instrumental albums, one nite alone and it's tour,

everything was just inspired and in particular 'non plastic'.

i wish he'd get another kick like this and just release 4 or 5 projects over a couple

of years, a full album, some instrumental discs, a stripped down acoustic one etc.

but as it is, these still work just fine. great, great stuff.

Because the Darth Vader Voice goes on way to long. It's short on 1999.

this is one of his best albums to date musicaly.

never mind if u agree with his spiritual ideals.

The music is amazing. Very natural and organic.

I was disappointed with several of the followups to TRC. I expected him to take things to a higher level after that record and tour but we got Musicology, Planet Earth..only with LF did I think he was back in stride ..and thats what should have followed TRC imo..LF.

I dont like the jukebox album theme either. Give us some themed passion even if its legit or daft.

might as well do the whole experience now. "one night alone" boxset here i cometh! can't wait for the aftershow!
