Revisiting HIGH: Which orgers...

...would like to see a new Prince album in the vein of the never released High album?

In other words, who, like me, likes the High album, or at least, the tracks that were released around that time? I think they are funky, poppy, rock, and yet they are not overtly commercial like the Rave tracks. This is exactly what I wish Prince would do.

I have been listening to those tracks again, in this order, and I think it would have been a great album (-Hold on now, I KNOW that there isn't really any proof that this album was planned, certainly not in this order, but one can dream... fro )

1. Peace! (perfect opening track, funny and funky; sets the mood of the album; perfect for radio also...)

2. High (title track, funky, retro, but again good for radio... nice summer track)

3. My Medallion (nice story, funny at times, nie scratchin')

4. Vavoom (killer track, in the vein of Peace and High; best of the three though imho; fonkaaay guitar; this is what Endorphinmachine should have sounded like)

5. Sex me, sex me not

6. U make my Sun Shine (revisited this track after a long time, and I have to say: it's da bomb! shocked Just wish Prince would do a track like this (or The One) on every album; It's not quite the same as Muse... (although I like that one also) "Behind your back he calls ya names/ but u're still a queeen to me"; need I say more? )

7. When will we B Paid? (GOOD cover, nice guitar solo, stomping drums, instrumentation is perfect)

8. Underneath the Cream (I just love those laid back songs; this one reminds me of Player every time; I love the keyboard hook, complemented with Prince's spoken voice)

9. The Daisy Chain (I know it's an NPG track, but I can't see it seperate from the other tracks; like every album has (or should have) a ballad in the vein of U Make My Sun Shine, it should also contain a funk jam (Emancipation has Joint 2 Joint, SOTT has Housequake): The Daisy Chain is definitely the one; not only is it radio-friendly, it also has lots of experimentation, esp towards the end)

btw, Tracks 6 through 9 blend perfectly into one another. boff

10. Golden Parachute (laid back, like Underneath the Cream, resting point of the cd)

11. Supercute (one of my favorites, as is Vavoom; super funky guitar, stomping beat, very melodic, very soulful, yet very radio friendly; the lyrics and the melody, in combination with the guitar lics and the bass liine, are mind absorbing to me, esp when he starts singin' "I wanna see if she'd share/ the kinda toys she uses when I'm not there" etc damn... I mean ... DAMN fro whip)

12. Gamillah (instrumental ditty, kinda fucntions as the 'I Wish U Heaven' before the experiment of Positivity)

13. When I lay my Hands on U (experimental, in the vein of When Will We B Paid, but weirder...; good solo, strange beginning, perfect album ending)

What do ya think?

The 1&only thing I wanna see from Prince now is an organic
ethereal rockhard record with decent lyrics, sans dogmatic
babble, with live drums, crashingscreamingorgasm-inducing
guitar work. no central theme, no story, just a collection
of outstanding songs.

High was not exactly that for me. It has some decent tunes
but it is not what I would want a new Prince album to be.

It served as a nice transfer from RAVE to TRC, as the sound
became a little bit more organic and the compositions were
a little less predictable. It really sounds like he was just
experimenting with other sounds again after all that plastic
production stuff [emancipation/nps/rave] and in some songs
he worked it out and in others he still keeps hanging on to
that "hipper than hip hop" dull production and silly dance
thingies.

But from the few songs that did manage to sound different
and healthier, you could already work out that he was
trying to come up with something more "real" again, which
is just wat TRC turned out to be. But it's still a far cry
from work such as TRC and the ONA piano album or Xpectation.

Having said that, I still enjoy the album...

Had he released it commercially, "High" would have been his best album since "Gold Experience" and might have done much to restore him in the public eye.

I hear ya. TRC without the dogma-nonsense and High are the kind of albums I'd prefer.

And ehm, if Endorphinmachine had sounded like Vavoom it
would have sounded weak and flat. I'd take that sink and
those cowbells together with that firetruck any day over
the flat 1d soundscape of "Vavoom" as it was released.

The original Vavoom sounded WAAAY better.

I would so much like to hear all these songs, but I only became a member of NPGMC in 2002. Is there anybody in europe who could burn them for me? I would be so happy!

Prince made the right decision to release those songs via the music club. Sorry but more than half of them aren't good enough to be on a fully fledged release. That Sex Me, Sex Me Not song is so rank its disgusting. It really does seem that people forget how brilliant this man can be and how they now settle for mediocrity. High would've been a disaster. This is Prince for fucks sake!
