Siskel and Ebert review Sign O The Times.

They heart them some little man--who blames them:

Wonder if Gene ever went to a show. Roger was too busy buying donuts..lol

I agree that Sheila E was great in the film, but to say she stole the show is rank bullshit. This is about Prince and just how alive it used to be.

It's dead now, but we smell the stink.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

And then 3 years later, they would review Graffiti Bridge and give it (deservedly) horrible reviews.

No it's more like Superman being exposed to Krytonite (old age for P) and losing his super powers.

Young Prince really was superhuman.

Yes I remember when PR came out and they reviewed it. They were even on Nightline talking about it...that's how crazy they were for the film.

I remember that Under the Cherry Moon was also on their worst of the year list. I can still picture the clip they chose to highlight it lol

I wonder if they would be any kinder all these years later, as that film has probably aged better than Purple Rain (musical performances aside)

Interesting they both liked it, even sounded enthusiastic about it. My dad watched it and said "all his music sounds the same."

Of course, when he finally gave Prince a chance he loved the show at the Forum last year!

Is it sacriligeous to say this movie would be so much better if it wasn't lip-synched? I'm surprised that they didn't mention it. If it was live, it'd move from the top 20 concert films of all time to the top 5. As it stands, I rate Livesexy Dortmund 1988 higher. That concert is simply awesome. I definitely put it in the top 5 along with Stop Making Sense and a few others.

Nope.

In fact, I wish I was ignorant to that tipid. Still, it doesn't take away from the fact that he's one of the few masters in showmanship then and now.

lol

I've heard that comment too. It's funny because there are hardly any other artists whose output is as diverse as Prince's. Maybe it sounds that way to some because they're not used to the strong beats that drive his music underneath and expect big choruses on every song etc.

They probably didn't know back then... I myself enjoyed the show for years before knowing it was rerecorded.

The problem with the Lovesexy show is that the sound quality of every circulating transfer is close to unlistenable, while the sound quality of SOTT is excellent, so in the end I'd rather listen to lip-synch lol . We need a remastered rerelease of Dortmund and we need it NOW!!!

By the way wasn't there a DVD/Blu-Ray release of the 1985 Live announced in Canada???

You mean Al Green's songs all sound the same.

Prince 'was' about as diverse musically as humanly possible and he got black America into rock.

no it's right, you're on target,it's so strange that the hottest live performer released a lypsynched performance to showcase his abilities

Yes, that's the problem with this movie. I enjoyed it a lot, but it sometimes feels fake. Most of the stuff is filmed at Paisley park, and not Rotterdam. I never understood why he did that.

With Lovesexy and the Purple Rain tour you get there's a much bigger live feeling.

Apparently he wasn't happy with the sound or picture quality on most of the songs recorded during the live performance. I guess that since they had already put money into the project he chose to finish it anyway. I've understood that they really just redid the vocals and the drums in the studio. I wish they had just worked a bit more on the editing, so the lipsyncing wouldn't be so obvious (or maybe it was meant to be obvious, who knows).

It's a "concert movie" and that's what it should be seen as. Of course, the word "LIVE" written on the front cover with big-ass letters doesn't help in that regard.
