true.. 8.5 maybe even 9 out of 10 on a good day..

If only I could make an edit,

-- and, delete the Darth Vader voices.

I own both the CD and the LP vinyl album, still I haven't listened to this album in years.....

why get rid of the "darth vadar" voice? rainbow children is a narrative journey as much as a musical one. there's a story being told in this album and the fact that he created a totally different other worldly voice to do it added to it's dramatic effect and cohesion.

would 1999 be the same without the darth vadar voice announcing the impending doom? or the lovesexy concerts as beautiful and psychedelic without ingrid's poetry? or if i was your girlfriend without the marriage opening?

these are the strokes of something more than a methodical, conventional musician. these are the strokes of an artist's brush, the flourishes that show he was thinking outside of the box and not playing by the rules.

For me, it was an album I had to listen, & listen & listen again & again to then... slam it's sheer perfection & brilliance suddenly hit me!!! I cannot tell you how much I love this album! And I love the deep voice!! It's all part of the story to me. Had to tell my son not to be scared of the darth vadar voice as it's just the funk talking! lol

Such an incredibly funky album & the sound of the bass on it is just Phwoar! Love love love The Rainbow Children. And funnily enough, I found out one of my kid's great grandmother's maiden name was Mary Rainbow! Ha ha ha I was gutting myself laughing that they actually are Rainbow Children, but my mother-in-law somehow just didn't get it at all! biggrin

For me it's as good as the 80's records, love it exactly as it is with Narartion. Also I am a hardcore atheist but didn't feel as strongly against religion as I am now when this came out. Still love it though regardless..

It seemed to me like the real continuation of what he was doing in the 80's, and that the whole 90's was a sidestep (though it had great moments)

It was like after Graffiti Bridge, he became prince --Diamonds & Pearls has a lot more in common with Gold than it does with Parade--and that with Rainbow Children, Prince was back. It felt like in the 90's he was trying to appeal to everyone, but with TRC he embraced being himself again, for better or worse.

I am not religious either, but that never stopped me from singing along with Anastasia's Jesus lyrics or saying the Lord's Prayer in Controversy (or countless other examples). The narration is just goofy fiction as far as I am concerned. I speak it along with Prince in the lowest voice I can manage.

I know what you mean, but my friend who is not really a fan loved the album. He is a music fan, and the music is about as good as Prince gets.

a few weeks ago i listened to this album again. somehow i always mention it as

one of my top 10 prince albums but i realised i hadn't actually listened to it as a

whole in over 2 years or something.

so i dusted it off and had another listen.

and then another one. and another one.

i've never had a problem with the 'darth vader' narration or any of the sugarry

sweet stuff on it.

as i listened i had a few dozen moments where i went 'oh yes, how could i have

forgotten this? this is so amazing!'.

great album, and great musicianship.

whenever i listen to this i have to smile as i remember my hysterical fam-out on

the day i first heard it. after new power soul and rave, this came as something

of a shock. a very pleasant shock though.

i don't know what i was expecting, but it wasn't this smile after spending most of a

day trying to download it with my slow connection i finally got it all on my hd and

pressed play and then i just went kind of nuts, to be honest.

every twist and turn and every new song my smile just got bigger and bigger and

my faith in prince was restored, fully.

he was on fire at this period. the instrumental albums, one nite alone and it's tour,

everything was just inspired and in particular 'non plastic'.

i wish he'd get another kick like this and just release 4 or 5 projects over a couple

of years, a full album, some instrumental discs, a stripped down acoustic one etc.

but as it is, these still work just fine. great, great stuff.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Because the Darth Vader Voice goes on way to long. It's short on 1999.

Exactly! It's like how they say the only reason to ski is that taking the boots off feels so good. You couldn't feel that without the misery that comes first.

i've been indifferent to everything that followed it, liked the odd tune, hated many of them. this album is so good because like his other critically acclaimed works he had the balls to follow his own insular path with no concern for how it would be perceived commercially. i would include albums like dirty mind, around the world and lovesexy in the same category.

i wish he'd challenge himself like that again, challenge us not pander to us. i hate when he asks his fans what they want to hear, it compromises HIS genius. he's more to me than a jukebox.

i'm listening to it for the 4th time today, willing to do the work? too right i am. the title track is easily one of the most eclectic things he's ever done, it goes off in tangent after tangent before resolving itself in the ecstatic "rise children rise" harmonies. it's glorious!!

i don't give a shit that i'm an atheist, i can still connect with other's passions. i was an atheist when i celebrated lovesexy, when i shouted YES when he asked "do u believe?". what a truly special artist to be able to do that!!

come on princey boy, it's time to start soul-searching again. it's never too late, not if you're HONEST. don't look to the past, tell us your fears, your loves, your strengths and your frailties. stop injecting your music with botox, i wanna hear 54 yr old wrinkles.

Damn. Why havent you posted like this before?

I was disappointed with several of the followups to TRC. I expected him to take things to a higher level after that record and tour but we got Musicology, Planet Earth..only with LF did I think he was back in stride ..and thats what should have followed TRC imo..LF.

I dont like the jukebox album theme either. Give us some themed passion even if its legit or daft.
