Prince, Facebook, and interactive society I noticed a thread about NPGMC (RIP), and another regarding download revenue. Do you think the internet could even handle Prince? Like if he were to just one day suddenly spend visible time consistently with his fans... Even say what he "really" thinks without the smirk or shades. I know of a few somewhat successful artists (not on his level) who are almost constantly on Twit-ter or Facebook, sometimes its TMI but often it is very welcoming, kind conversation or, of course, jams and marketing for sale. His (unremastered) collection would make a hot slab of gold if he were to digitally remaster and produce very limited physical, instead relying on cash from clicks. I would sell my life to hear the albums loud on my iPod. You know you would too. Joni Mitchell has almost 300,000 fans on Facebook but all it does is show her wikipedia page!!! Younger folks I know don't seem to understand how weirded out and uncomfortable the more progressive, informed older artists are with the internet. It sort of perpetuates and feeds a growing distance between generations that is almost totally avoidable and unnecessary, which is irony when you consider how forward thinking, excited, and ready for the future these folks once were. Prince may never be back in a visible, honest way. Especially on the internet. Its too bad for us, especially the fans who were so excited about the internet (and still are). NPGMC was incredible and unforgettable but we gotta move on, y'all. I still love the older albums but I do feel old when I want to turn them louder on my iPod and simply cannot. I'm not going deaf! I'm 30 for pete's sakes. PS - Has P stopped using hieroglyphs and symbols in written form? I can't say I have seen his writing for years now...

I think the way Andy Allo has posted on FB has been very refreshing and open (although she does not comment, thus keeping a healthy distance), I think Prince is in a different stratosphere where a visible presence online would prove an uncomfortable relationship with the masses. I don't see why an 'official Prince' website or FB page can't be used for connecting with the fanbase. His scattershot online activity of late (using Dr. Dingleberry for instance) is not a great way to communicate effectively.

Prince should NEVER stoop so low as a Facebook page. The average joe and jane having one is pathetic enough, but folks should have some dignity. Prince has trouble enough whenever he is interviewed, he doesn't have the Je ne sais quoi to pull that off, so a Facebook page would be disastrous.

The main reason I threw up this post was due to Facebook's recent turn towards a profit driven model. I know he is not really down with his admirers, but i personally used to love his messages to fans. One about how time is a trick is very memorable. His appearances have been very scattered making it hard for even huge fans to catch him in interviews. His back datalog, sorry catalog, spans many labels and agreements now. If he were to compact his works into an accessible purchasing forum or venue it could be very profitable. The only ones that seem heavy enough to carry such weight seem to be iTunes (no interaction), Amazon (competing with used original physical product), and Facebook. Facebook could be a great place for limited interaction but unimaginable potential profit. His own hosted site would likely not perform as well due to his... reputation based on previous adventures. Fans still feel burnt but Lotus. Even Tamar's album. And many of us have never even seen a physical of 20ten but we all got it somehow. He has effectively cockblocked himself from what was once the next great frontier over cash and spilled milk. Makes me sad.

"interactive society" makes me think I'm about to read an interesting academic paper. It's be great if Prince starts having more honest and open interaction with the public, but only if he's able to keep the extreme aspects of his religious views under control. He should take a page from Joe Biden's debate handbook--be true to your catholic faith but don't force it upon the rest of us. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

When were they using a loss driven model?
