Prince Covers

What do y'all think is Prince's most covered song? I'm thinking When U Were Mine, Purple Rain, Kiss, Do Me Baby or When Doves Cry. Hell, I even heard a few versions of I Feel 4 U & Let's Pretend We're Married.

More people have covered "Purple Rain" than all the other songs combined, although many of those covers were done by major artists in live settings, and not put down on record.

I quite like Cyndi Laupers version of 'When You Were Mine'. I'd say it qualifies as decent.

the Simple Minnds cover of 'Sign o' the Times' is ghastly. bored2

may display symptoms of sarcasm

I want some! Oh song covers! I thought you meant bed sheets! that would be cool!

No one is coming for your abortion: they just want common-sense abortion regulations: background checks, waiting periods, lifetime limits, take a class, and a small tax.

I'd say 'I feel for you' too if it's strictly covers. If I can just chuck a curler, I'll say Nothing Compares 2 U and for a bit of spin, hers was better. neutral

Now where'd I put that breakdancing mat we used to take up the park, ooh, mustn't forget my shades and white gloves. wink

I'm aware of more than 1600 released (digitally and/or on cd and/or on vinyl) coverversions, and I’m sure there are lots more:

When Doves Cry: >140 versions

Purple Rain: >120 versions

Kiss:> 80 versions

1999: > 70 versions

Nothing Compares 2 U: >70 versions

(be aware, this includes multiple coverversions by the same artist, like the more than a dozen versions of When Doves Cry by Ginuwine)

the best by far is the Chuck E Cheese version of "I feel for you"

i wasn't counting nc2u as a prince track but i agree hers is the definitive version. in fact since 1990 i would say it's prince that's been covering her.

i'll meet ya at the park, i've got a new ghetto blaster and axel f on tape so we'll have a little body pop then i'll give ya a backie home on me grifter.

The legendary Electros eh. - I'll see your Grifter (Bet it was red) and I'll raise ya a Striker, a Mk1 Chopper, and some Racers.

Right, you've got the wog-box, I'll bring the barrow full of batteries. Loser pays for a bag of chips and 10 B&H on the way home (That'll be you). Prolly wont cost ya more than 2 quid. Then I'll give ya a wuppin on the Commodore 64 or the Spectrum 48. Unless you're gonna break out the Atari for a game of Combat Tanks?

Scorp

when Trey Songz was singing "Purple Rain" in Prince's presence at last year's BET Awards show

Prince did not like that at all, you could see it in his face

that cat never should have performed that song, that's one of the songs that u just don't touch
