I can't see any connections from the Camille "Singer" and the Camille "muse" that leads to the creation of TBA, apart obviously the same name. Otherwise, it would be correct to say that the "When 2 R In Love" contained in Lovesexy is Prince's cover version of an original by Camille (I know it's pure madness ).
For me, Camille is obviously the original 8-track album and the other tracks where is officially credited ("Scarlet Pussy", to say one).
Any other tune released with a pitched voiced (like "Love Or Money" or "Sex", to say) but credited to Prince is Prince and not Camille. Otherwise we can say that on "Erotic City" Camille sang additional vocals.

Surely, the only Camille tracks are the unreleased Camille album:
....plus U Got The Look and Scarlet Pussy.

My point exactly. The only credited Camille tracks are the tracks from LP, U Got The Look and Scarlet Pussy - no other tracks are credited to Camille.
Now if you want to include other tracks that use vocal techniques or whatever, that's up to you - I doubt even Prince put as much thought in to it as we do, obviously Camille grew out of the earlier use of the sped-up vocal technique and it's influences P-Funk et all, so including Love Or $, Erotic City etc is fine by me - just we all know they're credited to Camille.
I also agree with TrevorAyer that later tracks aren't Camille - for me more than the vocals, Camille is part of that time, it's Prince at that period basically - old man granny perm is not Camille. 3121, FUNK - nice tracks, but not even close to that cat Camille.

uuuhhhh yeah i know they r Camille tracks

If When 2 R in love was a Camille track, he surely would have said so in the notes of Lovesexy album. It doesn't even have the voice. "Rock hard" is the only Camille track on the Black Album.

Awesome songs, shockadelica would be in my top 5 Prince songs.
As others have said also, the Camillesque voice effect was used a lot in the 70's Ohio Players- funky worm, being a great example and a great song!

I must be in the minority here, because I have always thought the sped up voice is a waste. It was like playing records as a kid and speeding it up to 78 to get a good laugh. Thank the maker for live versions of some of those songs. TRUE BLUE

Are some you suggesting that the Black Album isn't Camille. I'm almost sure it is per the Lovesexy book & concert. When 2 R in Love is on the Black Album. We are quite aware of what is credited to Camille, hence the fact that we are saying Camillish vocals. I knew this dumb debate would take place.

i think that you are right. The lovesexy tour book notes talk about the Black Album being created / influenced by Camille!

o.k. 1 thing i think we can all agree on is that all the Camille / camillish tracks really are standout funk tracks. He took funk to a whole new level with these songs, everytime I listen to them I hear something new, something quirky going on deep down in the mix, the horns driven by Eric & Atlanta always killed, the chicken grease guitar was funkier than blue cheese left out in the sun - in short the best of Prince!. All hail the spirit of Camille!

the camille character was more than just a sped up vocal. it was an alter-ego, a persona. camille is to prince what ziggy or alladin sane was to david bowie. prince used camille as an extension of his personality, a playful, sexually ambiguous little shit.

I think he just found out how to tweak his voice. Played with the buttons in the studio and liked it.
Do people count Good Love as a Camille job?
IIWYG's a lovely Camille too, etc. etc...
I believe Good Love was originally recorded for the Camille album .

i find it interesting how many people on here don't know the history of the Camille voice.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm well aware of the history myself, not that I'm saying you're referring to me. It's not just about the voice though.
I wondered if people considered Good Love a 'Camille' track, taking into account it was eventually given for the BLBC soundtrack. If you look up when it was recorded etc. do people consider it 'Camille'. I never think of that when I think of Camille. What am I on about, I never think of Camille, what am I? Sleepwalking?

It was on the Camille LP, thus it's Camille.

It's obvious Prince was still shooting from the hip, as far as the Camille persona
Camille was mentioned during the SOTT period and defined during the Lovesexy period but most of the Camille tracks released showed up on SOTT:Strange Relationships, If I Was Your Girlfriend & Housequake, & Shockadelica as a Bside and Scarlett Pussy rel 4 Lovesexy
yet 2 songs witht the Camille voice, not considered 'Camille' tracks (from the album) were released on the same album:Play In the Sunshine & U Got the Look
Love or Money showed this 'voice' was already being played with prior to the 'definition' of Camille as early as 11 July, 1985 Cosmic Day(unrel) and Sex as late as 1989 Camille shows up in pieces during the end of Lovesexy (the song)
Crystal Ball, Dream Factory also use the sped up voice
so as defined as we may say it is, it really is a 'gray' area
I used to speed up my Family lp all the time, after I heard Love or Money, there were a good number of Prince songs I enjoyed sped up
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Only to talk, now this is effectively interesting, in consideration of the fact that Prince worked on "Dream Factory", "Crystal Ball" and "Camille" albums at the same time, being SOTT the distillation of all releases.
The pitched voice used in "Dream Factory" to me is more in the same league of "Love Or Money" (trying something different), but maybe the song "Crystal Ball" was effectively created in the Camille "contest" (it seems to be in line with the rest of the Camille original album, and it could be a great opening track, followed by ROTF), later shelved from the final configuration probably for lenght problems.
BTW just a tought, only Prince knows.

But there isn't a Camille voice as such. Its a characterisation that has used the normal, sped up and slowed down voice.
I'm suprised how many people don't know this. .
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly. This topic comes up every couple of years. Camille is not a sped up vocal.
The only Camille tracks are:
Rebirth of the flesh Housequake Strange relationship Feel U up Shockadelica Good Love If I was your girlfriend Rock hard in a funky place U got the look Scarlet Pussy Le Grind Cindy C Dead on it When 2 R in love Bob George Supafunkicalafragasexi 2 Nigs united 4 west compton
Sources:
The first 8 tracks were mastered as the camille album, "U got" is confirmed in the SOTT credits, "Scarlet" is labelled on the Single release and the Black album is confirmed by Prince in the Lovesexy tour book (and on the tour when he sings Bob George).
So Camille = normal vocal (Le Grind), sped up (Good Love) and slowed down (Scarlet Pussy).
People seem to get hung up, wanting to call anything sped up as "camille". They even litter wikipedia with that crap.
Camille was Prince's dark mindset, not a vocal style.

I know. It's probably because of it's release on BLBC that I have a niggle with it somehow. I can't make sense of that given half the other Camille tracks went around a bit themselves.
