According to V103 website Prince 60.49 % & Rick 39.51 %, so Prince won!

between the two I choose Rick James for funk/R&B. Nobody touches him!! I would choose Prince for pop/rock field. Rick James is da bomb!!

Definitely the right two to put up against in a battle because they were both the baddest of the bad. The winner for me would be according to the particular tracks that were played for each of them. If they played a lot of the pop/rock stuff from Prince or a lot of the stuff recorded after Purple Rain, my vote would definitely go to Rick James. And if they played a lot of stuff like "Glow", "Ebony Eyes", "Sexual Luv Affair", etc. from Rick James, my vote would go to Prince.

A battle with stuff like "Let's Work" going up against "Hard To Get", "Sexy Dancer" going up against "Come Into My Life", or just hard driving jams in general like "Lady Cab Driver", "Fire It Up", "Head", "High On Your Love Suite"....hard driving funk up against hard driving funk from each artist....it would be hard as hell to choose.

If it were Prince vs. some shit hopper, I would agree. But the Prince being put up against Rick James has been going on since the early 1980s long before they started putting him up against Michael Jackson and that was mainly the pop fans that put him up against Michael Jackson.

When the actual battle was going on in the early 1980s, most R&B fans were fans of both artists and the reason they even put the two up against each other is because both of them were the two hardest jamming artists on R&B radio at the time and that's saying a lot because damn near everybody was throwing down hard back then. I used to hear a little of the "Prince is a fag" thing coming from a few hardcore Rick James fans back then but not very often because most of them saw Prince as a talent that matched Rick's but simply liked Rick's style better. I never saw much mass crazy homophobia from some Rick fans until the internet but I also noticed that Rick's fan site only had very few members which means a lot of the crazies gathered together in one place. And like Prince has some crazy fans that will change their whole view of life to match Prince's view of life, Rick had some crazy fans too that would absolutely hate Prince simply because Rick hated him. There's a lot more Rick James fans than the ones that were on that website. Most folks in general in the real world just see them as two bad ass artists and if they had to choose, they simply choose the style of music they like best.

Oh, you need to get some full albums of his and you will be in funk heaven. Unfortunately, Motown is the world's worst at releasing old albums on CD though. But if you have a turntable, put them on, turn them up, and throw down.

Even tho Rick was king back then, it really depends on the songs that were played because Prince was becoming a monster. It was over for Rick when Prince made 1999.

If it were me, I would buy those two albums first.

"Cold Blooded", only available on vinyl, is another good one too. It was his last really good album before he fell off.

I was a Rick fan before i became a Prince fan so rick is near and dear to my heart. Having said that though, i gotta give it to prince.

I have been looking for Cold Blooded for a while on cd. I refuse to pay a lot of money for a poorly mastered cd. I will stick with the vinyl for now.
