Without question it should have been the lead single. Catchy tune, radio friendly, no mention of any "NPG" references repeated throughout, excellent guitar riffs (something sadly missing from many of Princes studio recordings) and the whole duet element would have made it a hit regardless. Great shame it never materialised due to the politics at play.

Prince doesn't need Gwen Steffani to make a hit record. Stop underestimating him. Like he is a has been artist & half way to the grave...rolleyes

Back in 1999 he did.

And Rave ended up being a big flop.

This of course has nothing to do with his factors as an artist though as he still remains the best.

When will you try to be objective?

I don't know about lead single, but the second should have been I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore. Pushed to adult contemporary radio and not the TRL audience.

Dude, it is considered a flop. What with Clive Davis making a big deal of it with a record release party and for the signing of Prince. And Prince doing marketing duty by all thiose print interviews AND by going on TRL (lol) and VMA's. And all of the the guest stars on the record. It was supposed' to be Prince's Supernatural ala Santanas blockbuster. So if u think a record with a cheap video that was only played on BET and gold status as a hit with all that behind it then okay.

For album, sales yes.

In this order of singles

Lead: So Far, So Pleased

Pretty Man (hey, if Living LaVita Loca could do it)

and maybe...just maybe.... TGRES

It's an obvious choice, but much like RNR Love Affair, Fury, Cinnamon Girl and similar it's got no bite to it.

Aw c'm'on, Fury is no Witness 4 The Prosecution, but is certainly not dull. The lyrics are unusually biographic, the interpretation and guitar is passionate and while the studio version sounds ok, the live SNL version is a classic.

I refuse to shelve this pop gem next to RnR Flop Affair.

What was it Prince said: On record - slave, live; better. Or something like that. That sums up Fury.

very good point. P sold his soul for this project - Christ he was doing Saturday morning kids TV shows, frankly I don't think he has ever worked an album that hard in terms of promo BUT overall the product he delivered wasn't that great. 500k in sales for that CD was a disaster - would love to hear Clives side of the story...although I suspect we will already know what he has to say!

SoulAlive

I would have chosen these songs as the singles,in this order:

"So Far,So Pleased"

"Baby Knows"

"Wherever U Go,Whatever U Do"

"Silly Game"

I think those songs had the best chance of becoming hits and getting radio airplay.

For those that don't know. "Fury' was set as the next single after "Black Sweat".Prince had it all planned out to use the video of the SnL version for its video release. But he got a rude awakening when Universal the label that distributed his gold selling 3121 album, put a stop to the video version. Because the company owned the rights to SnL. Well u know it doesn't take much for Prince to lose interest. He got pissed and took it as a sign & gave up on the whole project...It just seems like whenever he deals with Record Labels he has bad luck besides his "Musicology" project..

Yeah, but, my "Fury" single is in a cardboard box down in the basement with rest of my Prince stuff.

It's the end of 2012 and that's exactly where "RNR Love Affair" is ending up!

What's the point anymore?!

Prost! beer

No he does not. He can slay any artist out. He is just waiting for the right deal to release his gem "MasterPieces"...He doesn't need any artist, producer whatever..

forgive me K but that's crap and you know it. In effect what you are saying ]and agreeing with all the so called haters inc myself] is that he is happy to release crap until he is paid enough!. He has already had mega deals - look at the newpaper deals for PE, 20Ten, the big label deals for 3121 and Musicology etc. The upshot is that he is deluded with his own sense of what is great and worthy of his name. The man has zero pride in his work and hasn't for a long time. With Rave he got THE mega deal with a ledgend like Clive Davies behind the whole thing BUT the product just wasn't up to standard and he fucked up his lead single choice. If 'Masterpieces' is a titke / project you know about all I'm going to say is that Emancipation was referred to as the album he was born to make!!

Anybody that doesn't believe Prince can still slay any artist isn't really a true fan of his & never was...That man can write a hit in his sleep & "RnR Love Affair" can slay anything on the radio at the moment.. If U listen to the tracks he gave Andy. Anybody with commom sense should know he has even better ones locked up in his vault. When the right deal comes along . So those "masterpieces" won't get wasted. he will release them & all of U will be eating crow & praising him again.

K' are you seriously putting forward the Andy A trax as representative of 'quality gems' ? !!. If this is the standard of his masterpieces he really can keep them locked away.

How can you say that R&R can slay anything in the charts - there is a lot of great , innovative music out there that's also hitting the charts -especially so here in the UK. As for saying critical fans aren't true fans?..really?.

Me thinks you have too many connections to the purple camp to be coming out with all of this;-)
