Guitar playing on Lotus Flower ,is it up to Prince's standards?

I Love Prince's guitar playing. For me Prince is one of the best and most talented guitar players ever. When it was reported that Prince is making a guitar rock album i was thrilled. But when i had a few listens my feelings were mixed.Except a few songs that have great solos and riffs it feels like he didn't invest much time in it.I can't remember the melodies of the solos after i stop listening. I think that The Rainbow Children is a much better guitar fiesta.

TRC probably shows off a bit more, yes, but I feel like I have to mention that I think the solo in Crimson & Clover is one of the best he ever put to record.

Prince's music, at least on record, has rarely been about soloing. Even when they've shown up on classic albums, they're usually mixed into the background as part of a larger overall sonic tapestry. Not sure why you'd feel LF would be that much different. In fact it's featured on that album more than most.

his guitar not so loud in the mix is maybe related to Lovesexy period. To my ears guitar solos on Purple Rain album is up in the mix.My problem with Lotus are non memorable solos

Now that you've mentioned it, the solo on Crimson n Clover reminds me of the one in Just My Imagination (Small Club) as it has the same cescendo feel to it imho.

Really? What always impressed me about the mixing on that album (and on ATWIAD, Sign and Lovesexy especially) was how low the guitar was in the mix.

I mean, imagine if any other artist/producer had released Let's Go Crazy or Purple Rain (song) - they'd have turned the guitar about by at least 2-3db, for sure. I think the guitar is very quiet on PR, especially in the solos. And I love that mixing choice.

Let's Go Crazy have guitar low in the mix? Since when??? I agree that there are Prince's album where the guitar is low in the mix like Black Album,Lovesexy but i don't find guitar low in the mix to be a regular case. And starting with the Gold album his guitar is even more loud. But i agree that Prince restricts himself in the studio.

Don't you think the hook line is very deep in the mix, whereas other producers would probably turn the synths down and the guitar way up, giving the song an ever rockier edge?

Well Synths are up in the mix,i like it that way,but the guitar sounds nice to mix. When DOves Cry on the other hand does have a guitar solo a bit lower in the mix for my personal taste. I agree that there are albums with guitar lower in the mix but only on a few albums, not in general

None spring to mind. Few of his ever do. There is some nice, highly adept playing on the album though.

Lovesexy still had his best, most understated, guitar work. I find it fascinating that he often chooses to almost hide his guitar within a song. But I fully get why and it's what sets him as a genius song crafter in my opinion. The song foremost.

I didn't care for any of the guitar playing on Lotus. It's sort of 'Santana Knock Off' musak style. Not good enough for someone of Prince's calibur. When you start to think that he played 'Let's go Crazy' and '777-9311' 30 years ago, you'd expect his guitar playing to improve or at least stay around that same level, but the guitar on Lotus is laughable compared to those tracks

Wow, I'm surprised no one mentioned the solo on Boom. He gets his shit off on that song, what record are you guys listening too. Also the solo on Colonized Mind (which has been mentioned) is dope as well.

I thought Lotusflow3r had good songs on it, but as a whole lacked grit. Beverly place just ruined the flow...

Totally agree - love what he's done with Crimson & Clover - the song, the mash-up (which I think works brilliantly), the 'guitar-fleckles' dotted around the song and the solo just gets me every time & is one of my favourites. For me, up there with the best of his work.

I was just about to say..listening to the new boots at least in the last 10 years compared to the 80's live shows..his guitar skills and tightness with the band have improved alot. The newer songs themselves are okay...maybe he needs to perform the new songs alot more than he has been because I believe he has been playing mostly his (and others) older music for a good 8 years now...

Album plays and love for vinyl records.
