I was driving in my car and it came on the radio. It was announced as Prince's new one and I was shocked because I hadn't read about a new release. It was hot as hell outside too though. Southern Cali being what it is. But it was tough to me because it had a lot of bass. This was way before D&P was even released. Talk aout a preview single.

I honestly don't remember. I probably listened to it when I bought the CD.

I was more into clubbing in those days than Prince stuff. Still listened to what I had but I'd lost the bug and wasn't that keen on what I'd heard of his last offerings. We had the radio tuned in to Jazzie Bs show and it just came on. I fuckin loved it. Downed tools, rolled a joint and had a jiggle.

I think I didn't hear it until I bought the single and played it. My memory of this time is kind of spotty, but here's how I think I remember it: A friend of mine who worked at a record store told me Prince was going to release the b-side to "New Power Generation" as a single (he thought "Get Off" was going to be the single). Then I was driving in my car and I heard "Do Anything" by Natural Selection and thought, "This new Prince single is great! I have no idea why he thought 'Get Off' was going to be released." And then a couple days later, all confusion was cleared up...although I had a really, really hard time believing Natural Selection wasn't a Prince pseudonym or something.

I just happen 2 be at the "Wrekkuh Sto" Lol (see Under The Cherry Moon) I had just saw a single from Prince called Thieves in the Temple and wasn't 2 crazy about Graffitti Bridge, 2 this day I have only seen it maybe 3 times. As I was say'n I was going through the Prince singles back then they sold single cassettes and I just happen 2 catch a single called Gett Off by Prince which I had seen the Video already from MTV AND B.E.T playing it . I will tell u this, Prince came with the Funk on that 1 everything about the song spelled hit. I really love this song 2 this day and I still bump it from time 2 time. I went home after I bought this single and played it over and over. 1 of Prince's most under appreciated Jamz ever, along with Diamond and Pearls the cd/album/cassette was purely 1 of his best in the 90's and overall 1 of his best creations period. Gett Off...23 positions and a 1 night stand!!

i used to have one of those stereo's built up out of separate components.

a tape deck one, an equalizer, a cd player etc etc.

something was wrong with the cd player iirc and i was on my back, lying

with my head in cupboard trying to fix it (not unlike someone working a

clogged sink, lol).

my brother was at my desk, playing a videogame on our 17th hand NES

computer.

and all of a sudden, there is was, that prince scream!

i tried to get up so quickly i nearly threw the whole stereo over

scrambled like mad for a tape and got it in the deck just in time to record

the last 2 minutes of the track.

somehow, it was instantly recognisable as prince, yet totally unlike anything

he'd done before as well.

i remember not being completely sold on rosie's vocals back then but i did

keep listening to the radio all day so that i could record a full version which

i took with me everywhere on my walkman.

LOL. component/stereo, nintendo nes, cassettes, walkman. i'm a dinosaur

later on the video was released and to my 13 year old mind that was like the

coolest thing on earth

first time i heard it was on some radio station well before it came out, and it was the house version. i remember the "n i'm the big dipper" line and thought YES!!! prince the hornbag is on his way back, he's seen the error of graffiti wank.

i was so disappointed with d+p album after this treat, still to this day think it's dull and formulaic. got back on track with the symbol album, a mad fucking glorious mess. much like prince was at the time.

That's how I felt. Gett Off belongs on a Black Album type of release. D&P was some mor prince music

Freshmen year in college and Tom Joyner played it on K104. K104 played the Purple Pump Mix (I think that's the one...the one that is the edited version of the house mix). I didn't hear the original until I saw the video and bought the cd maxi single.

My parents and I went to Texas that summer on vacation. We first flew to Houston. I remember it was blazing hot the day we arrived. We had just left the Houston airport, picked up a rental car, and were driving to the hotel. My dad started going through the radio dial and we ended up on a hiphop/r&b station. Nothing out of the ordinary happened until...

The scream. Then, the beats.

I immediately told Dad, "Turn that up!" It was like nothing else on the radio at the time! I spent a while trying to figure out if it was indeed Prince, because I wasn't quite certain...it sure sounded like him...and I basically made Dad keep it on that station the whole time we were in Houston so I could hear it every time it came on!

When we were leaving, I put in the stereo of our beloved, big-ass 1979 Chevy Blazer aka The Tank. Mom started the ignition. She began to pull out of a parking spot...then, the scream! Mom SLAMS on the brakes, screaming herself, thinking she had run over someone!

Oops. I kinda turned it up loud, since I finally had the single and all.

in a friend's dorm room in college. it was funky. cd cover had that funny handwritten quality. musica was pretty dang cool, but the drums were (and are) a little too loud.

my friend was one of the first hardcore prince fans i knew. and now, many years later, i'm much more of fan.

Prince had a small club show in LA to promote it where they handed out the 12" Get Off to some fans (I didn 't get one)--I think it was called the Coconut Teaser but that doesn't feel right to me. He played it during the show and it blew me away.

Are you my clone? That's exactly my story. I was also in London for a weekend trip (from germany) and found the cassette single (US import) at Tower Records/Piccadilly)

The only difference is that I knew that a new album was coming out and that the single was due to be released. And I had only to wait until I went back to my hotel room to listen to it, because there I kept my walkman.

Ahh, great memories of a great time and a great trip to London (my first). We had beautiful weather, lots of fun, plus a great new single from prince.

This is one of those rare times where I recall actually hearing something for the first time. Slightly different to everyone else's stories though.

I was on holiday in Cornwall with a friend who was a huge Prince fan and he was driving us around record shops trying to find an import copy. At that time I wasn't in to Prince, I had him down as, 'that gay bloke that screams a lot'. When he eventually got a copy he stuck it in the casette player and ramped the volume up. What was the first thing I heard? That gay bloke screaming again, I tuned out after that .

Fast forward many years, now I'm the big fan, my friend has fallen off the purple bandwagon and I loooove Gett Off.
