well since they're back 2 back and sort of segue into each other on the parade demo that was recently 'released', i'm just gonna say it's one song and not chose
because, let's be honest, these are both amongst the very, very best he's ever put to tape. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

i 2nd that
they are just 2 very different songs and I wouldnt know the how or why of comparison
Dream Factory vs All My Dreams maybe because of similar subject and music style

I don't know because 1. I don't have All my Dreams 2. I'm sad because I didn't get the OFFS rehearsal in time or Darkness and 3. Spiritotter you don't revisit/bump your thread, so I'm just gonna feel sorry for myself here and sulk. You have to find it. It's such an amazing song.

All of my dreams, Old friends has better lyrics, but is less inventive and not as musically pleasing. I assume you mean the 1985/86 version of OF4S rather than the 1991 version on the Vault too. MattyJam, the song is on any of the Dream Factory/Parade era out takes bootlegs. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

OF4S....better lyrics and more interesting composition. I like All My Dreams, but musically it sounds kind of elementary to me.

Both. Why Should I chose between the two, when I have really good copies of both for my listening pleasure? الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

all my dreams is kinda hokey .. too cartoonish and super straitforward structurally .. i don't even really enjoy it much at all .. its sort of non offensive but do u lie is a much better hokey lil song than all my dreams .. old friends is a classic since i first ever even heard it till now .. super duper awesome song .. old friends drown all my dreams in the ocean of lil yellow submarines it came from .. old friend for the win!!! .. dream factory is way better than all my dreams too .. all my dreams reminds me of singin in the rain .. it just doesnt quite fit that classic standard level of lyricism and delivery that singin in the rain provides .. its not as timeless

i think the music goes along with the theme "Parade" especially since it was 2 be a part of the original soundrack, it probably would have worked well with the film
CTParade worked well in its place in the film too
the 1st part of the movie had that carnival feel with Christopher in the gold suit and Marys birthday & birthnight parties
the entertainers colorful people the animals
* perfect place 2 have had Sheila E ie A Love Bizarre & the Family ie High Fashion(that carnival sound herer too)
Old Friends 4 Sale would have been perfect in the bar Venus de Milo Prince(piano) BrownMark(bass) & Bobby Z(drums)

all my dreams for the ending alone . "goodness will guide us, if love is inside us..." . old friends... is awesome as well though (both versions) For all time I am with you, you are with me.

"All my dreams", because for me, it shows the power of the Revolution. Everything comes together, the soundeffects, Wendy and Lisa on vocals, the Parade vibe (even the Lovesexy vibe), the very infectious beat, the craziness from 2:46...just everything I love about P & the revolution.
Old friends is amazing too, but well, "All my dreams" does it for me.

Old Friends, original. All day long.
Like a lot of great songs it's pretty simple. I love the piano on it. The way he sings the song and what he's singing about just make it the tits for me. It's one of those that I wish was longer. I didn't go much on All My Dreams when I first heard it. It sounded like one from the girls. I'd just heard OF4S for the first time though and it had a lot to live up to. Like someone else said, the ending of dreams is good. I Like the voice again and it's an alright song but it's nowhere near Old Friends.
When I got it a while later on vinyl it was a crap copy. You can hear each song quietly cue up underneath the proper recording. Bleedin bootleggers eh, you just can't get the staff.

"Old Friends 4 Sale".
Never understood how "All My Dreams" has managed to become such a fan favourite. The melody is just plain kitschy (which I don't have a problem with, but I don't recognize it being that great either). Tracks like "Splash" and "In A Large Room With No Light" are better takes on similar musical ideas.
... and, for that matter, I think Prince did the right choice by not having either "Old Friends 4 Sale" or "All My Dream" on Parade. Maybe they could have been on DF indeed, but that one never came out.

Okay, I'm almost fixed up.
I vote OFFS. More soulful. All my dreams beat is too consistent. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

All My Dreams. It's perfect. One of my favorite songs by anybody. It just makes me feel good whenever I hear it.

It's a tough call. Both are great, and it's sad that the public hasn't heard them.
All My Dreams just wins out for me. I like happy songs at this period of my life, and this is pure candy floss, blue skies and green grass. It's psychedelia with melody and inspiration.
These tracks along with Crystal Ball point towards a fascinating possibility for his music that I felt was never realised.
I do wish the avant-garde Prince had stuck around for a little while longer.. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

the city I grew up in, one of the local radio stations used to play Old Friends 4 Sale regularly (as a promo 4 the upcoming Prince movie Under the Cherry Moon) so in that time period a small portion of the public heard it regularly (late 85 into 86...)

Both are extraordinary. Because he really bares his soul in OF4S I'd have to go with that one. Not to mention it refers a lot of his eighties history.

I'll never understand these pointless 'versus' threads.
Why the need to compare two songs that are completely different and can't be compared in ANY way?
I would understand someone asking this regarding, say, Delirious, Horny Toad or Broken since they are all the same type of rock'n'roll/rockabilly tracks.
But comparing -and having to choose- between OF4S and AMD is unnecessary and pointless.
How can I compare a bluesy soul track -which means nice but very standard harmonies, 1000 times heard- with a nearly 'impossible' tour-de-force that no one but Prince (and less than all, the current Prince) could've created?
Does the assertion above mean I prefer AMD because of its originallity to the standard harmonies of OF4S?
Really?
REALLY? | |
