I mean REALLY - what's so GREAT about the SOTT movie??? .
I really wanna know from those of you who love it. Is it the quality of the performances? The songs themselves? Did you just fall in love w/ the peach guitar or what? I think some of y'all just like looking @ Sheila Fill me in - I know the performance of "Forever in My Life" was killer but other than that, what's so memorable about it?? Glowing review after glowing review I read on this mutha, I really wanna understand. Don't get me wrong, I like it okay, his hair looked great!! but I've NEVER been as impressed as most of you seem to be. Make me fall in love w/ it too, I'm begging you (yes, I'm very fucking bored)... Thanks!

I'd hardly call it a movie... it's just some great concert footage. Given that most people here seem to consider SoTT as their favourite album, it's not surprising that the concert video is so popular.
Beats the pants out of the awfully jumpy and jerky Rave DVD anyway...

While I appreciate it as visually exciting the fact that a great deal of the performances are lip-synched holds me back a little. I don't dig "fake live" performance on the whole...

Go watch that again! Kay Need more incentive though... Um...excuse me? Him doing doing circles on the microphone top with his finger, while walking backwards up the ramp with a grin, isn't good enough? Frankly, I am appalled.

I've never held SOTT the movie up as highly as I do SOTT the album, but I hear what you're saying & understand why people would

Somehow this doesn't sound right. Granted the whole show was re-created on the Paisley soundstage in front of a rented crowd for the most part. But I don't think they were lip synching. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Starts out with him at the keyboards, each key illuminates and lights up his face? Then he and Cat do some wild action on either side of a "fence"? GoodNESS...surely...you need to bust this one out.

At least SOTT looks like it was filmed on the same day. Rave looks like it was done over several days. Plus the editing is very obvious. Besides, that gawd awful shiny electric blue foil outfit Prince wore with the matching scarf () can not hold a candle to those peach and black outfits from SOTT. Those alone are worth pulling out the tape. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Go watch that again! YES! I love the outfit he wears for that so much! What's NOT to love about the SOTT movie? I just think the entire thing is excellent.

The fact that it was over-edited to much, the unessecary small interludes between the songs where prince tells something completely irrelevant, the terrible appearance of the video of 'U got the look', makes it fail to really stand out as a concert movie up there with f.x. 'Stop Making Sense'.
Though I prefer the SOTT-tour generally over the Lovesexy-tour, the Dortmund video beats the SOTT movie.

Loads is lip-synched, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Hot Thing, U Got The Look (of course)... Woud have been nice to get a straight up live SOTT concert like Lovesexy's Dortmund set.

I always like the part at the end of "Forever in My Life"; you know when hes in that train conductors hat or whatever, and Prince starts singing/screaming "I wanna tell ya...I wanna tell ya...I wanna tell ya, tell ya, tell ya, tell ya" and he gives his longest, screechiest scream ever, "yooow" and you can tell it hurts his throat because he pauses, puts his head down, wipes a tear from his eye. Even the band members come up and pat him to see if he's alright. But Prince just shakes it off, smiles and continues to groove.
Oh, also when he tells Brother Maurice he's feelin' like he's gonna "kick somebodys ass" on "Its gonna be a beautiful night". But my favorite is on "Hot Thing" where he comes runnin' from the side of the stage, slides under Cat while simutaneosly grabbing off her little skirt and he pops up on the other side with the splits and runs off with it in his mouth. "this is where the PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE be"

The whole thing is like a Purple Rain without the tacky drama acting scenes. Hence its all good parts. Plus the cinematography is great. The whole concert feel is captured. You get to see Prince perform several SOTT cuts live-ish that we didnt get to actually see live on that tour in the states. Sheila E's drumming, Prince and his choreography is stunning, the material is great, the stage show is great. It all comes together in a Prince show that isn't overburdened with crap ala Purple Rain live, yet not as completely bare bones as Parade shows were. The stage is an awesome dirty minded pinball machine ta boot. Prince comes off as a seasoned vet without having to do forced shwomanship, but inspired showmanship imho. This must have been the greatest show on earth live. Thank god it was documented even if it was documented by memorex.

SOTT is beautifully shot and edited. The colors just pop. It's shot shot on film (or digitally?) VS the way Rave was shot on video which looked cheap.
The performances are electric. What about the lengthy and dramatic guitar solo towards the end of ICNTTPOYM? The cool outfit and dance sequence of Hot Thing? The cute piano version of Little Red Corvette? The explosive performance and lighting of Play In The Sunshine (complete with a sarchastic jab at Sheila)? And the climactic rendition of The Cross. This is a top notch concert video. It's not as raw as the Prince & The Revolution 85 video. But it makes up for that with the gorgeous visuals and great editing. There were alot of dumb shots in the Prince & The Revolution video that detracted from the wild performances. SOTT and U2's Rattle & Hum are part of a rare group of stellar concert videos.
