When Oprah asked Prince what he wanted people to know about him, his answer was "the Music". Well, we're "knowing" it.
I don't believe buying boots actually constitutes stealing from him since he never officially released these recordings anyway. Even if the bootlegs didn't exist he still wouldn't be making money off of them because they'd be sitting in his vault collecting dust.

onenitealone said: I'm not getting into the moral/ethical/legal arguments surrounding this - if you don't own any bootlegs, fine; nobody's forcing you to.
However, I'm willing to bet that MOST people who visit this site have something which is unofficial. That's not to say it's justifiable - we ALL want to see Prince get paid his dues. (How many of us would go into work and do a full day's shift without expecting to see some financial incentive? Certainly not me!). However, if the bootleggers are dangling the product in front of you on a stick, who can resist? It's like a Pandora's box - do you support the artist (and risk NEVER hearing the tracks) or do you purchase (and get a hitherto unseen glimpse into the world of the artist itself)? The fact is if Prince released all the bootlegged tracks that are in circulation, we WOULD all buy them. Even those that everybody owned already. Prince sometimes seems pre-occupied with being #1 at the bank; well, shucks, if THIS isn't a sure-fire way of keeping the fans happy AND bringing in the dollar, I don't know what is. There again, it's his legacy... All I know is that for many, many fans (not necessarily myself) it is these very tracks that have sustained their love of Prince through thick and thin. And wthout them, they would've lost the faith a LONG time ago. Amen!!!

I hardly EVER play the released albums, I love Prince for being the live artist that he is, so studio albums don't do it for me. I also hardly play the demo's/outtakes CD's for that same reason. Are you an official-releases collector? i play his released music

Yes, if someone's job can be done better then he actually does, it's OK to correct him or do it better yourself. By buying/trading better ONA shows then ONAL, you improve his work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

However when it comes to performances it must be seen a little different, because I think that he is not harmed in any way since he has no intention to release them officially and getting paid for them... I would be very easy for him to follow the example of many others (Pearl Jam, Phish, etc.) who sell the soundboard recordings of their concerts via the www. i wonder if you'd say this if you met him... me thinks not what a stupid comment that is...believe it or not, you can love his output without simply simpering over him should u ever get to meet and discuss this with him. i would hold my head up high knowing i have probably financed a paisley park studio over the years, but also hunt down boots...

MrBliss, do you have any idea, how many people have become interested in Prince music after having downloaded some live tracks or complete shows. I know at least 15 people, personally, who have bought TRC and other Prince CDs after having heard some of the most recent concerts he has done for ONA and Emancipation. They had downloaded them from the internet, becoming curious after the whole Nighttown buzz and really really liked it. Even though they've never been interested in Prince with only knowing the released songs that are played on the radio.
This way, the bootlegging is an advantage for Prince. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What a jerk-off you are. you're not a true fan Shut up you tit. If you can get your head out of Prince's hairy crack for two minutes you might be able to see the bigger picture. I have every official release, and if he released the stuff that is on bootleg, I would buy that too - but he hasn't, so it doesn't impact on any profit he makes from me. I'm a fan of the music, and have very little interest at all in Prince the person. Anyway, I'm off to listen to Moonbeam Levels, or All My Dreams - enjoy listening to Rave --------------------

I was/am member of the club and don't hold that opionion, pretty obviously. Btw. There was this great action from the guys from paisleyparkvault(a bootleg site), they actually have been onstage at least twice, wearing a PaisleyParkVault Tshirt! Probably as a statement to Prince. PaisleyParkVault has been threatened to close down by Prince's lawyers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I know for sure, that without the constant stream of new material floathing into my stereo, I would have lost interest in his music a long time ago. A few albums a year is much, but not enough for me. I guess I'm just quickly bored. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Phew! I was beginning to wonder whether you might be Prince himself, MrBliss, but with all this 'fan' talk, you can't be (!).
No-one is attacking you; but you have to understand everyone's opinion. You cannot say you are more of a 'fan' than someone, simply based on this issue. That's purely subjective. We all like him in different ways. Do you also think that those who refused to call him 'The Artist' or during his dispute with Warner Bros. weren't fans either?? Cos I don't know ANYONE who did - he was still 'Prince' to most of us. Yet THAT wasn't his official stance. Or do you agree with ALL his JW beliefs? Or do you never curse anymore? Or do you...?? I could go on & on... You cannot possibly say you are a greater fan than anyone based on one single issue. We ALL love Prince, in different ways - let's just be happy with that. By the way - are you telling us that if we came up to you with a BRAND NEW Prince track, never released, never been heard before, funky as HELL, you'd refuse to listen to it?? You'd send us packing, covering your ears until we were out of earshot??

The PERSON Prince doesn't keep promisses made to fans and is far from loyal to his fanbase. The musician Prince just makes great music. The only way you should be involved with the person is true the pictures in the booklets. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
