Not all of them...especially the live recordings.
Think of City Lights, Small Club, Wonderboy and some more!
I often prefer them to convince someone listening to Prince instead of well-known regular CD's.
AND IT GAVE US THE POSSIBILITY TO LISTEN TO THAT FANTASTIC BATACLAN AFTERSHOW AS WELL!!

if you hate them so much why bother starting a thread about them for crying out loud?

yes boots infringe on his rights, but boots are only traded between fans who have poured money into all his official projects.

if you don't like 'em don't buy 'em...simple.

would you like some sort of prince-endorsed prize for being so pure?

i simply refer you to my previous comment - if you don't like them don't deal in them. lots of people do - with no cash changing hands - and they get a lot of pleasure from it.

BUT, you don't win prince 'fam' points for repeating the age old mantra of 'boots are bad'...

I agree as long as we are talking about unreleased tracks. Because I think that is a violation of copyright issues.
However when it comes to performances it must be seen a little different, because I think that he is not harmed in any way since he has no intention to release them officially and getting paid for them...

I would be very easy for him to follow the example of many others (Pearl Jam, Phish, etc.) who sell the soundboard recordings of their concerts via the www.

Actually, someone here on the org, from Holland, had a talk with Prince about owning bootlegs...don't know what his orgname is though.

Please respond if I'm talking about you!

None whatsoever. If he releases a live show, he has to pay sabotage if they already released it. If I had already released that show, I would sue his little ass.

I'm not getting into the moral/ethical/legal arguments surrounding this - if you don't own any bootlegs, fine; nobody's forcing you to.

However, I'm willing to bet that MOST people who visit this site have something which is unofficial. That's not to say it's justifiable - we ALL want to see Prince get paid his dues. (How many of us would go into work and do a full day's shift without expecting to see some financial incentive? Certainly not me!).

However, if the bootleggers are dangling the product in front of you on a stick, who can resist? It's like a Pandora's box - do you support the artist (and risk NEVER hearing the tracks) or do you purchase (and get a hitherto unseen glimpse into the world of the artist itself)?

The fact is if Prince released all the bootlegged tracks that are in circulation, we WOULD all buy them. Even those that everybody owned already. Prince sometimes seems pre-occupied with being #1 at the bank; well, shucks, if THIS isn't a sure-fire way of keeping the fans happy AND bringing in the dollar, I don't know what is. There again, it's his legacy...

All I know is that for many, many fans (not necessarily myself) it is these very tracks that have sustained their love of Prince through thick and thin. And wthout them, they would've lost the faith a LONG time ago.

Maybe this is put to black and white.
On one side the bootleg-adoring people on the other side, the people that don't do bootlegs.

To the people who say that 'bootlegs suck', you even don't want to own the bootleg to shows that you've witnessed? I've been to the amazing Brussels '98 show, and I would be so disappointed if I wouldn't have a recording to relive this show!

I've always had the feeling that there are two kinds of Prince-collectors: The bootleg collectors and the Official-Recordings collector.
First ones trying to get as many bootlegs as possible. Second ones who want to have every official CD/vinyl/cassette/8-track/video/laserdisc ever released as far as the promo-vinyl for a cover of a Vanity 6 song, while the bootleggers just have their Bsides on a nice bootleg.

Still, I can't believe that the second group is not interested at all in a recording of the shows they've attended

Seriously, you only play the official Prince albums? I hardly EVER play the released albums, I love Prince for being the live artist that he is, so studio albums don't do it for me. I also hardly play the demo's/outtakes CD's for that same reason.

Are you an official-releases collector?
