Thanks EyeJester, another good video!
Liked your observation about Delirious being like circus music, never really thought of it like that but now you say it its true.
LRC - Great song, when Prince performed it here in England at the Hop Farm Festival in 2011 he did a slowed down version, it was amazing, they used red lights and it really held us all in the audience.
Something In the Water - This definately has a slick sparse cold-war era feel to it, as if we were all under threat. I do however prefer the later version (often referred to as the Piano version) but really it has many computer type sound effects and handclaps, it's AMAZING. Try and listen to it if you haven't already.
The song Automatic somehow reminds me of a washing machine on spin (?), something to do with the melody i don't know, it's slightly mesmerising!
Agree about IL - good but not the best, can imagine Morris doing this too.
Oh and I should mention Moonbeam Levels - pretty much every fans fav. outtake which was rumoured to have been replaced by 'Free'.
In sum, I think 1999 as a whole is massively underrated, when I first heard it I was quite blown away by 70 mins of this funk. Saying that though, I hardly ever return to it now as many of the major tracks are on 'The Hits'. If it wasn't for PR this probably would be seen as his classic I'm sure.
Loved the outfits around this time and love the 1999 video.
Thanks Jester, really like your ease on camera. U have a good P scream and u have good moves, maybe u should consider being the next Prince?!!?

Really positive and fortunate of us to have 30 years of music, not that we want to limit it to The Time 1999 has a special place in my life. I was fortunate to have been a teen during the 80's and my earliest memory of a Prince song is "Delirious." I have memories of seeing him on MTV...Little Red Corvette, 1999 In '82, I was ten yrs old, so my take on him back then was from that angle Funny how engrained Prince was in popular culture of that time...thangs change though No justice, No peace

Thank you SO much my friend!! I agree with everything you outlined! I very much appreciate it. How can I forget Moonbeam Levels? One of my favorites for sure! I love the piano verson of 'Something In The Water' a bit more myself. I heard it before the original and was a bit sad when I heard the original. BUT it's still pretty good!
I could no way be the Next Prince. LOL
I can not take it to the levels as he is able...AND my screams have alooooooooooooot work to do. LOL..That guy's range is out of the world! lol

No problem, it's nice to see your 'work'. U've got a lot of potential in life, I can see that.
I also heard Something in the water piano version first, and I felt EXACTLY the same when hearing the original. Interestingly though ppl who didnt hear the piano version first or at all seem to like the original quite a lot...to me it just sounded quite dated after the piano (amazing) version...

Eyejester, being as crazy as I am for Something in the water (which I absolutely think is one of his most inspired moments ever!), I just listened that Owl City song. Now I'm familiar with it. Wish I didn't. It cut all my moment Partying-like-1999-just-turned-30 moment. I never payed much attention to him. -Wtv u heard bout me is true,I change the rules n do what I wanna do.[Im n love w God,He's the only way - NOT!]We know we gotta die some day,so Im gon have fun evr MF night!Im gon 2 another life. How bout u?

This is a truly great album and has always been in my Top 3. Its up there with Purple Rain and Parade, but SOTT is slightly better, still none of those albums would exist if it had not been for 1999. The best part of the album is the fact its his first fully formed vision as an established artist. Whereas Dirty Mind and Controversy had moments of greatness, this was the goal they were coalescing into. The music is deep and well produced, theres all types of sounds on the album, pop, funk, r and b and a lot of electronica and drum machine to propel it along. Prince sings a whole lot of falsetto and deeper voices. The songs are all gems and even the jams that run on for 9 minutes sound great, 1999 was a classic bop against the bomb. LRC is flawless pop with a catchy chorus and some great libido driven lyrics. Delerious is ultra catchy, Lets Pretend were married is in yo face and chanting and hilarious. DMSR is just funky and once of the greatest dance trax ever written. Automatic is cool and I love the sadomachiostic feel of it, the video is a delight. The next 3 songs are not as great, but still good and International Lover is a seduction masterpiece, sex as air travel so clever and dirty. The Bsides are also great, How come u don't call me anymore, Irresistable Bitch and Horny Toad, the last two a sign he was keeping all the lust that dominted his previous 2 albums, still this lust made Prince, Prince, a musical equivalent of an oversexed satyr.
But theres also the jams that didn't make the final cut that are also great, Moonbeam Levels is amazing and would have sounded great on the album as a companion piece to Free. Theres also Lust u always and Extra Loveable, maybe a bit too x rated for the album (Both songs use the word rape), but both are very high quality and funky as hell. And lets not forget Purple Music, it aint reefer or cocaine its purple music going straight to your brain, in fact the whole album is the introduction to Purple Music. It would seem nothing would top it, except for an epic release like Purple Rain of course. Either way this is a fine album.
Its even better still when one considers at the time he was toruing his ass off and writing albums for his side groups the Time and Vanity 6. If nothing else this album was the first major sign of the genius inside Prince. It was his big breakthrough, 1999 was the album to expose to the public at large beyond R and B and trendsetters. Although Purple Rain was the big hit, this album, the tour, songs and the videos on MTV were what established Prince in the public concsciousness.
I love it, this album always gets marks from me in the 90s and A's Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Wouldn't it be wonderful to know that an album you created changed someone's life, especially someone who is also an accomplished musician? Prince has been blessed to be such an artist, one who has changed people's lives.

Brendan said: I'm about to state the obvious. You've got major skills in front of the camera. I think I wrote eyejester the same thing on an earlier thread of his. No "um" and "like" while speaking, very fluid, and not fidgety. I think he said he was studying communication or broadcasting or something. I like the genuine happiness you radiate talking about 1999. There's no Prince fans around with whom I could talk, so it's nice to see your little videos talking about him. Thanks! I've also seen videos of org'er Internationallover talking about Prince music, which I enjoy for the same reason, but yours are more broadcast ready. You ought to have a podcast or something. I like peach & black for the same reason - just to vicariously get some fan talk. What I like about the P & B podcast is that there's more than one fan talking with each other and bouncing off ideas, adding facts, or even disagreeing. Maybe you could come up with a format that would work for you? I'm going to go play 1999 right now! As someone said, most of the songs are on The Hits, but I like the flow of the album itself, and I also like the songs that are not on The Hits- like International Lover! (You are obviously straight - the most prominent thing in that photo is the glove on his left hand?? ).
