Prince Singles You Never Hear On Radio

I think we all know the big one's radio stations play

1999, Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Rasbery Beret, I Would Die 4 U, Kiss

What are some Prince singles that you have not heard on the radio in years?

Cream & Batdance where number 1 hits.. yet i have never once heard them on R&B, 80's or any other station lol

Pop Life is one of my favorite Prince songs.,. and even though it went to number 7 back in 85 it seem's a lot of people don't remmeber it. And i haven't ever heard it on radio either!

What are some others?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I very rarely listen to any radio, and have not listened to mainstream radio in years. I do occasionally listen to late night radio though.

There used to be a late night alternative radio show on UK station Radio1 called The Breezeblock. The host of that show used to play Darling Nikki and Temptation quite regularly, in between death metal and glitch techno tracks. lol

She always maintained the belief that the next time that Prince was on UK shores, that she would "get him in for a special show." I'm not sure what regular listeners would have thought of Prince coming in and playing Sly Stone tracks, but alas, it's never happened.

Sorry for the slight subject diversion.

You are so right, Kiss is played to death here in shops, malls and even lifts (Only the Tom Jones version in a lift). LRC and 1999 are also played heaps along with Raspberry Beret and Lets Go Crazy.

But you never hear I wanna be your lover (a #3 hit here), Delirious (#8 hit in the USA), Purple Rain (Maybe its too long, most stations now have to have 5 minutes of ads every song).

Alphabet Street, Batman and Thieves in the Temple you never here (First two were #1 hits here and TITT was a #4 hit).

You never hear any post 1990 stuff either, not even Diamonds and Pearls or TMBGITW which is sugary as it gets.

Maybe as Prince falls out side radio station demographics here (Auckland New Zealand). Oldies stations like Coast (Which plays 40 to 70s easy listening), Solid Gold (Mostly 60 and 70s rock and pop), find his music too risque and recent. Yet youth stations like Mai FM (Plays mostly shit hop), The Rock (Hauraki, plays heavy rock and metal 1970s - now), This leaves only Christian (Lite fm and Rhema) stations and ethnioc stations (Tarana - Indian) Pasifika FM. Star China. and Muslim stations that would never entertain Prince on their airwaves. Whats left Classic Hits which plays soft rock and pop from the 80s to now will play songs like LRC, 1999, Kiss etc and the best are the student radio station that will play most of his earlier stuff.

What we need is an R and B dedicated station or a dedicated 80s/90s New Wave/Alternative Rock and Grunge station that will play Prince, Nirvana, EMF, MJ, Bobby Brown etc and we will see a lot more Prince classics on the waves.

I think if we had a gay station it would play them too, don't laugh, Prince has always been huge in the gay community.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

The only time i heard the songs you mentioned... was this radio show my aunt works on in my hometown called ''when it began'' which is like 80's new wave, rock, alternative stuff.

And they are allowed to play more than just the usual hits razz which is cool!, classic stations only do let's get crazy, when doves cry, 199 & LRC. R&B will do those & more.

80's pop stations i would hear I Would Die 4 U a lot.

I'm still amazed 2 of his number 1 hits never get replay lol

I had a job where they had a radio station on called Arrow Classic Rock where I heared Pop Life on a regular basis. Even Guitar sometimes.
If I go back to working there, I really hope they haven't changed it to 100%NL. (Dutch readers will get the joke) wink

I hardly ever listened to any radio past the late 90's but in the late 80's/early 90's, I don't remember that many songs from the past catalogue being aired on mainstream radios in France: 1999, Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Raspberry Beret, Kiss, Girls & Boys, Manic Monday, Sign "O" The Times, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, Mia Bocca, Alphabet St. That's all more or less.

Now, at time of release I remember hearing I Wish U Heaven, Batdance, The Future, Cream, Diamonds And Pearls, Money Don't Matter 2 Night, Love... Thy Will Be Done, Sexy M.F., The Morning Papers, Peach and The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.

After that I only listened to an electronic music oriented Swiss radio station (from 1996 to 2000) which oddly played Shy a lot in '96. I also, later, heard a few songs from The Rainbow Children, Musicology and 3121 on my local jazz station. And I know that Dance 4 Me and Rich Friends had a little airplay on mainstream stations at time of release.

Outside of that, NOT A THING. I never heard any of the other hits, or post WB singles, on the radio. But as I said I ain't a great radio listener.

Here in Australia before and after his W2 tour the more main stream radio stations started playing his stuff more. I was in the shopping centre and heard diamonds & Pearls being played, which I have pretty much never heard on radio. I also got a text from a friend saying she was at work and heard cream on the radio so I guess that tour helped bring Prince back to some kind of attention.

Pretty much the ones you listed are the only ones that are played any more. "Let's Go Crazy" ges played every once in awhile.

Obviously, I don't expect to hear singles played on the radio that were flops the first time around, but some of the Top 10 US hits that I never hear get played on the radio are:

Delirious

Pop Life

Sign O' The Times

I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man

Alphabet St.

Batdance

Thieves in the Temple

Cream

7

Now that I think about it, the only songs I ever hear on the radio is his 82 -87 stuff. The only 90's songs I hear played on the radio are "Diamonds and Pearls" and TMBGITW, and even hearing those songs is rare.

Interestingly enough, "Adore" wasn't a single, but I've heard that song played on every urban radio station in every state that I've visited in the US. lol I've been telling fools for years that THAT is, without question, his best song ever!

Now constrast that with the many singles he's released...the only ones I ever hear on the radio are:

I Wanna Be Your Love

(Sexy Dancer* on Michael Baisden rolleyes )

Controversy

When Doves Cry

Raspberry Beret

Kiss

None of that other shit is played locally. I did hear "Space" remix" and "The Beautiful Ones" on an AM station about 3 years ago, but that DJ has since left. At the time of it's release "Call My Name" was pretty hot on the wire, also.

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

In my area,we have an Old School R&B station that plays the usual Prince hits ("Kiss","1999","Little Red Corvette","I Wanna Be Your Lover",etc) but I wish they would branch out a bit and play some of the other hits that I never hear on their station...

I wanna hear "Let's Work","Uptown","Dirty Mind"...hell,even "Insatiable"! I get tired of the super popular,well-known hits all the time.I'm sick and tired of the Purple Rain singles.

I hear all those and pretty much everything on down to "Lady Cab Driver", "Automatic", "Free", "Controversy", "Erotic City", "D.M.S.R", "Sexuality", "Soft and Wet", etc. on one of our local R&B stations from time to time when they have their lunch time oldies show Monday through Friday from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 p.m. and on Saturdays when they play all oldies from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. They get off during those times and I think someone told me that the let the actual DJ play what he wants to during those times. Other than that though, the rest of their format is some tired ass "soft soul" adult contemporary format with slow stuff mostly from the late 1980s up until today. barf

  • 7 (my jam in high school cool )
  • Sexy MF lol
  • The title track to Sign o' The Times. U Got The Look plays on the radio far more often.

I remember back in the summer of 1985...all the pop stations in San Diego played "Raspberry Beret". The one black station we had never played it...but they played "She's Always in my Hair" to death!
