Can we relate "Starfish & Coffee" to "Everybody Loves Me" in pure randomness??

So listening to "Starfish & Coffee" as I write this and thinking of Prince's silly expression that he probably had as he played this on the piano (most likely similiar to the one he had on his face as he did "Everybody Loves Me").

I wasn't around back then (1993 kid), so I was wondering what you pre-1987 fans thought of this track when you first heard it. What was the gist thought about this song that you've heard? Because I know when ppl heard "Everybody Loves Me", we kind of laughed with Prince's humor, & truthfulness, in it. Some of us thought it was very random of him to even include this track on the 20TEN record.

So what were your thoughts upon hearing "Starfish & Coffee"? The way it was arranged (playful melody & voice tone) & lyrics. It's placement on such an album like SOTT

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

My first reaction? I have to dig deep in my memory... It didn't really stand out between all the other tracks on SotT, but that's just because that album has so many outstanding songs on it! I did like the sound of it (only later I found out that was because the drums were recorded backwards) and I liked the fairy tale kind of storytelling in the lyrics. II also like the 1995 rerecording by the way.
I wish he'd play this live again! thumbs up! thumbs up!

Everybody Loves Me (which I actually like as a funny thing that Prince put on a sequence that also has him hop into a whole different genre and mood... is it Partridge Family/Brady bunch? lol ) is much hated by Prince fans,

But Starfish and Coffee was much loved and considered another Beatle-esque psychedelic narrative in the vein of something from "Around the World in a Day".

I bought SOTT not long after it was released and I have to say that at the time I thought it was the weakest song on the album. I learned to like it more over the years but I still don't think it's that great. Sure it's a fun wee track, and I can't imagine it anywhere else other than SOTT, but I don't really get the love it seems to get on this site.

As for Everybody Loves Me? I can't even remember how it goes, along with most of the other tracks on 20Ten.

i don't think 'starfish and coffee' was ever thought of by prince as funny. i'm quite sure he

wanted a song to be beatle-esque and quirky, and even endearing in a humorous kind of

way. but not funny.

everybody loves me, i can't really listen to and get 'funny' from it either. it feels more like

a sarcastic song. or a bit of a calling out kind of song. because he knows that many of us

bitch and moan about him on the net but once we're at his show we're all screaming and

throwing out panties at the stage lol

it might be funny if it didn't come off ever so slightly spitefull. the music conveys the 'fun'

element more so than the lyrics do. the music is humour to me.

comparing them by ranking i'd say starfish is 38976 and everbody loves me is a 4.

smile

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
