You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It's one of the very few tracks on D&P that I like. It was the opening track on the tour too. It was the very first song I ever heard Prince play live.

You should check out the 10 min version on the 30 YOUF comp. It's.....interesting.

I love Thunder! I love the production, Prince's vocal just KILLS, and the melody of the chorus reminds me of an old Negro spritual. It also doesn't feel like it belonds on D & P to me for some reason.

totally!

wasn't this one recorded by prince on his own, without the npg? i think he had this one

ready and knew it was too good to shelve.

this track alone makes me wonder what kind of album diamonds and pearls would have

been if he hadn't made it as a full band album.

but yeah, this track is great. the vocals, as you say, are superb. love the layering on the

chorus. and i just shiver when the "like rain...." bit comes up. lol

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Sounds quite plausible. I'm listening to it now. So dramatic! Shivers for sure. smile

Definitely one of my all-time favorites of his. Got me amped for the opening of the cd, then...blah. HAHA. Loved that he used it to open the tour. I really miss that, when he had the CONFIDENCE in his NEW material...enough to open a concert!!! Bring That Guy back!!!

It's one of those songs that when you -- okay, I -- first heard it, I was all "Whoah, that's awesome! Best track on the album!" You know, it kind of blows you away.

And then 10 or 15 years later, you haven't heard it in awhile, give it a spin, and just think... yeah, it's still impressive, I guess. But good lord, I can't sit through this. It wears my ass the fuck out by being so over-the-top and intricate and noisy and layered.

I can still appreciate it as impressive, but for fuck's sake, I can barely listen to it without it devolving into so much clatter in the space between the speakers and my ears. I don't necessarily need to be assaulted by a maelstrom when I listen to music. Or at least this type of maelstrom.

I AM SAYING! One of his strongest openings!! I LOVE IT!

His voice is perfect! I agree with someone as they said it's like an old negro spiritual! JUST BUSTING! It wasn't too long ago I discovered this gem and realized how great it was. The production is superb!

I heart Thunder, always thought it would make a great concert opening. It makes perfect sense that he actually used it for that purpose at one time.

The pic for the single looks like it's "Symbol" era. I guess Rosie musta peaced out by then.

Indeed. I find it interesting that they would chose 'new' artwork
in the form of a (most likely) post-rosie picture when they could
have easily picked one of any number of d&p era promo pics.

This always seemed to me like prince couldn't wait to introduce us
to mayte and make people curious as to what was going on.

Powerful track which still has punch today. Shame it hasn't received live performance in 20 yrs. Would make a wonderful inclusion as a guitar heavy rock number at a show.

It worked as an opener of the tour though. confused

Especially since he opens the show with lightning and THUNDER! It would make a cool opening song live
