I remember reading a review in the early 90s by a British critic. I think it was a review of the Nude Tour. The reviewer said that Prince is the first, only and last rock star. When I read that I got what that reviewer was saying. I think the context was that Prince was/is a true original, a bit similar to what that other reviewer said about he's the type of rock star that people would invent if they could. One of the best summaries as to why I am still a fan! Or a 'Friend' of Prince. I would not call myself a fanatic. Although, I am sure I would be quite fanatic on the inside meeting him the first time.
Prince is unlike any artist to ever exist; no matter how easy it is for some to classify him, he is really unlike anyone else. Sure we can say that about a lot people, but not many artists. Just go over the body of work he has. I am not just speaking about those he released, but those that we love that many people never knew existed. He has all types of music in his catalog! And as someone mentioned before, it's not that I am claiming Prince has MASTERED all of the types of genres he has walked into. But he sure as heck; delivered them. If you listen to a song like Xogenous, it sounds like a skilled blues player playing that guitar. He pretty much can control whatever instrument he has by pouring his whole soul by making it define your experience. I can think about so many instances where he completely became the song or instrument. It's obvious when you watch him live.
As you mentioned; he is really the type of rock artist an author might invent. BUT even in saying that, it brings us back to the artist he is. He has what it takes LIVE...He never fails at his name and continues to define himself. He constantly changes how he reveals himself..BUT HEY I can't add too much to what you have said! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I feel as if we are not so much in disagreement.
I am with you that a human cannot truthfull completely ignore past work of an artist in listening to new.
That said...it doesn't need to impede enjoyment of the new stuff to do so. Meaning, you don't have to be in a "When Doves Cry" expecting mind set when listening to "Diamonds and Pearls". You can separate different eras and albums and enjoy each for what they are. I guess for me, it's not a competition...its art. I am not looking for the next Prince album to top the previous one(s).

I am really not excited with 20Ten, Planet Earth and those Greatest Hits tours, but I am always expecting a surprise. I was feeling the same way from 97-2000 and then Prince recorded TRC, one of my fave albums. So...
Anyway, he still pleases me in a way most artists dont. Especially when it comes to current popular music.

I'm still a fan because I continue to enjoy the music and the live shows. I don't take Prince's choices personally and let them rule/ruin my life. I have had so much fun with Prince's music and shows and have met some great people as a result of it. It's been a party from the start and it ain't over!
Some of the people on this site seem so unbelievably miserable whenever they post about Prince that I can't fathom why they still follow him.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Also discovering a whole lot of bootlegs and outtakes and the fact I have most of his albums and just haven't really gone off him since at least 2005. I think I am riding the Purple Train until it reachs the terminus or the "Adorecream is dead station" if u get what I mean. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I was off the Purple Train for most of the 2000s. Rave and Rainbow Children were the last drops. it wasn't really until the North Sea Jazz and melkweg gigs last year that the magic was coming back. yes, those shows were pure magic like the old days! So yes, live he still shines, if you are lucky to catch something else then a greatest hits show. But that too is more than a year ago and these days... yeah, I'm still interested, but I have given up hope of Prince ever reaching the heights he reached with Purple Rain/Lovesexy/Name Your Own... But, the difference between you and me, TheDance, is that I don't mind! No artist can keep that excitement up for 30 years, it just doesn't happen. So I just enjoy all the good music he made and leave out the rest. And if he tours Holland again... I'll see... I'll probably try my best to get myself into a small club and may forget about the big show. But I have been into Prince's music for so long that there really is no getting away from it anymore, even if I wanted to!

because i don't pay any attention to what other people say. I learned from Prince at 16 that heroes have feet of clay and once I got past that, I take him for what he is and does. I'll forever be thankful for opening a whole world of music up to me, making me a musician. I have always admired his fortitude, he is the definition of a force of nature. No matter what else was going on in his life he was always trying. He put out albums 5 to 1 on average in comparison to his contemporaries. I love his work ethic, his keeping his nose to the grindstone no matter what. The other stuff I don't worry about, I don't think I own him like most of his fans do. for me it's simple, I listen to his music, if i like it i like it if i don't i don't. I dont' get off on ripping him a new asshole every time he does something, that's why. The rest of you are a bizarre mix, the gays, the fanatics who worship him, the people who think he's cheating everyone out of everything and owes everyone more.

Because he's like a best-friend from high-school. Even when your paths in life drifted apart a bit, you still try to keep a minimum of contact and check his facebook page once in a while, and you enjoy the scarce fun times you still have.
He doesn't make any stellar albums anymore and some of the stuff I truely loved in his music is no longer there... but once in a while there's a nice surprise (Pfunk, 3121, Black Sweat, live performances...). So I come to visit and check on how he's doing once in a while and fondly remember the past and enjoy the occasional fun. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

For me its a few things.
One, i still think he makes decent music. Two, I'm hopeful that he has another Sign 'O' or at the least, another PRINCE in him and three, nostalgia.
Some of the things that turn me off about prince 2012 are his lyrics, his continued infatuation with girls half his age and his apparent inability to really challenge himself musically(in the studio).
Having said that, i still prefer an imperfect Prince over the majority of today's performers, bands and Rappers.
Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I share your turn-offs.
Someway, Prince hasn't really matured that well as a lyricist or artist in general in the sense that he doesn't take his art to the next level. He's experimental when it comes to finding new business opportunities but the opposite goes for his music.
Lyrics are often postcard-level philosophy, very cheesey romantic or downright silly poppy, bouncy funk stuff. Not to mention the evangelic preaching material or overly religeous songs. Somehow I hoped there would be a moment where he would go and write bolder and rawer stuff on life. Not the sexual stuff from his past but really going for the zest in life. About stuff you learn in life, the changing views while turning older.
At the moment it feels like he just wants to be an old-school pop/soul/funk artist which doesn't lift him above many others, certainly not with the ease he seems to make these songs. It seems he's dwelling too much in his comfort zone. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

prince is like an old friend who had it all but then fucked it all up and just gets wierder and wierder, not in a good way but in a "rock n roll love affair" totally beyond lame way that leaves your head scratching saying .. when did prince become so utterly bored and uninspired? .. sure you want to keep up with him .. the drama is always fun to witness .. and there is some pleasure in ripping his half assed crap songs to shreds .. but mostly you just want to check up on him one day and boom .. he finally got it thru his pill and booze soaked brain that his music sucks and he should try harder and he does and he puts out that one song that makes you go .. oh yeah .. he's still got it .. but when he doesn't .. you are not surprised .. gold exp was no surprise after all .. we had jughead and horny pony as fair warning that the avalanche on his tallent was beginning to rumble .. so by now nobody expects prince to write a song that doesn't completely suck anymore than you expect your alchohalic aunt to wake up and straiten out her life .. i mean u still love them .. you still want them to succeed .. even after 20 years .. we can hope prince finally hit rock bottom .. but its these enablers that are like .. oh prince you still got it .. ur dragging out the process ... prince will never learn that way .. uda thought the newspaper option would get it thru his head .. but then prince sideswipes your plan by getting charted including his musicology cd in the ticket price .. boom his ego is back in action but the music is as abad as ever .. great! prince outsmarts the critics again .. we can only hope that the new single tanks in every regard so prince will try to not suck so bad .. people still come around because we all root for prince .. i was at a baseball game a few months ago and a friend started heckling our home team .. i said why and he said .. they deserve it with all the errors and horrible playing .. i love our team but they are playing like shit. and that is prince .. we love him but he is playing like SHIT and you cant just stand there cheering while he drops the ball over and over making all his fans feel stupid for rooting for him in the first place

what the hell are you talking about, i quit reading midway through you guys are just too much. What gives you the right to call him a drunk and pill popper, on what info are you going? Some of you, i'm convinced, are just miserable failures in your own lives and instead of dealing with that you project all that shit on someone else, could be your kids, your parents or anyone but here on the org it happens to be Prince. He is a better musician and singer than ever, he still cranks out music 5 to 1 at least in comparison to his contemporaries. I take great songs where I can find them and Prince has consistently had at least enough of those to make me want to listen, not to mention the mind blowing live performances he can come up with at times. Here we have a guy who's given us a volume of work that nearly no one in this field can match, the closest comparison is to jazz artists like Ellington or Miles and all you guys can do is bitch. I don't even have time to listen to all of his music and i know that if i was determined I could go to youtube or somewhere and find great songs which I've never heard before, yet all you can do is bitch.

u do realize this org is not just for prince groupie wannabe's right? why do you even read these negatively themed threads? i answered the op .. you just bitched about my post cuz you wanna bitch .. prince is always refering to boozing it up with his women in his songs .. and we know he was poppin pills from his hip issues and probably more considering how bad the music has been .. i am sure if prince gave a flying purple crap about his bitching fans he would put out some better music .. i am happy for you that you found some good music on you tube .. congraduflatulations
