I agree, I love hearing those Controversy 1999 -PR shows with the Dirty Mind & Controversy songs with that amped up rock n roll
nice recap of the bands and shows the one thing I loved about most of those pre PR era songs was the straight out jamming, they weren't trying to be anyone else they weren't showcasing just straight our raw renditions of the album songs

Great video again Eye Jester. I listened to this album much later than 81 so never found it Controversial. but for the time, Prince in his minimalistic attire was thoroughly daring, yet I mean....why not? We go to the beach in bikinis why not in music and dance?
I can resonate with the album vibe now and my earlier review is posted below. But tell me. Talk to me a little about the headline' president signs gun control act.' What's that's all about, my US history knowledge is poor. The album music is so great even today, I've never really gotten past that to get to any strong political messages. Amazing that the show was so poorly attended when the album has truely stood the test of time. Great to see the videos too, very funky!
Controversy - I think this is one of the "many" best tracks ever made. Just perfect from every angle. The live versions are so much funkier than the album version though. The French live performance in 2009/10 (?) was brilliant. Love the bass, it's gorgeous!
Sexuality - Another 10/10 Sure fire way to jack up your mind, body and soul. Do me baby - Love this one. Perfect gem though listen to it in a certain playlist, not from the cd. 10 Private Joy - is a funky, happy track guaranteed to put you in a good mood. 8/10
Ronnie talk to Russie - the beginning sounds like chaos. A short track but not one I listen to it. It could be a version of "Michael row your boat ashore" same kind of repeated verse.
Let's work - Nice bass. I don't really listen to this track much. Is it the one he plays a lot in recent concerts? It lacks a strong introduction, meaty core and lyrics seem predictable.
Annie Christian - Rap. Repetitive Agonising Production - just not my thing
Jack you off - Nice vocals and melody, funny typical old Prince lyrics. I wonder what it would sound like today, just as an instrumental with more bass. 8/10

Annie Christian & Ronnie talk to russia make the album for me
Ronnie is short.. but damn it.. the punk political nature is FIRE for me. And the cold sound of Annie Christian where Prince sounds like a robotic monster.. is priceless
The tracks on Controversy sound so cold! like when i hear it.. i imagine being in a dark room on a winter night. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I like your review, I like the fact you have the balls to put upa video of yourself giving the critique which is so cool, I wouldnt. Its also cool that a young person likes and appreciates Controversy (or at least you look young). I have also reviewed Controversy on my website - but I beleive, like you that the album is not as controversial as it wanted to be, I beleive that this album was an attempt to build his "image" as a controversial artist. The albums before that "Dirty Mind", was more of a game changer (for Prince) he sang stuff that was on his mind, and his live performance with the stockings, high heels, lipstick, androgynous looks, girls, boys, black, white, in his band gave him more attention than other artists - he realised this and played upon this. Similarly, the reading of the "Our Father", was designed to shock to get people talking about him to try to build up his image, but I think that backfired - it was his sexual imagery that was more potent at the time (excuse the pun).

rdhull said: The only album that counts actually.
This is where he learned to 'freak' the slow jam (Do Me Baby)
Created his calling card song that epitomizes what he is about (Controversy title track)..his Purple Manifesto that's a throbbing mass of awesome chicken scratch, synth wabs that are THICK and funky (the funkiest thing he has done outside of The Time debut?) and adds the blasphemous gall to incite the lords prayer into it. And folks got mad at the TRC doctrine? lmao
Sexuality--punky new wave that again stamps his doctrine mantra statements for all to hear (later to be dumbed down for the masses via Purple rain, a more commercial "follow me, I'm your leader" song)
Private Joy..the best pop confection he's done. F a Raspberry Beret or Take Me With..(wait a minute TMWU is the cut). Orgasmatron..shit just the way he sings in a lower register was cool. Not a hint of the last decades whine but almost a precurser to the Delirious Elvis Presley impersonation he would do later. And those drums! The linn! God this is like cream.
Lets Work? Forgetabbouddit. That bass pop lockin...the long version where he would make a released song a new one and take it higher...using the studio member chant/yells that would become a trademark of The Time. Lets Work not only funks a bit but it "swings" if that makes any sense (hi Supernova, I miss you).
Then the most underrated piece of his catalogue..Annie Christian...its almost anti-music..nobody seems to give A damn about the underlying guitar solo-ing thats embedded deep in the mix. Most guitarists would put that up as a whole song or an interlude..Prince was burying these solo's as an off kilter to the main melody..oh for that solo to be seperated and put out alone would be heaven. And seeing this song played live in that 81 concert thats going around looks like being in the pit of hell with the presenation and light show. Somehow he seemed...dangerous..the song and performance. I know the sistas were confused as funk...hell putting this on wax and the lords prayer and such, its no wonder folks in middle America etc and christian families were 'this guy..smh" lol. Seriously...blast this shit at night , lights down low or even off..its almost akin to a musical Bloody Mary Bloody Mary or Candyman, Candyman vibe. This song seperated Prince from the rest of the rnb funky bunch. No wonder he has went whole hog for jesus..I would too after half the shit he did on this album. Talk about a dirty mind lol.
And to cap it off, Jack U Off, a rockabilly showcase to show that he can do it all..a rock rave up in tribute to Lil Richard, shut up!
It had it all..funk, rock, pop, new wave, soul, and maybe even gospel.
Yall betta recognize Controversy..you bandwagon-ers, late to the show-ers, W&L flower picking day dreamers, Lovesexy salvationers, Gold experience era reminiscers....Controversy is greater than your mom.
First of all -- this album is awesome. Check my username to get an idea of how much I like it :) Second -- brilliant post rdhull. You pretty much summed it up. And finally - thanks EyeJester7 for the fun & thoughtful video. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Released September 2, 1981
Uptown, Sunset Sound, Hollywood Sound, 1981 Controversy" is the title track and lead single to the 1981 album by Prince.[1] One of his most respected classic funk songs, "Controversy" addresses certain speculation about Prince at the time such as his sexuality, religion and racial background, and how he could not understand the curiosity about him. The song has two main verses, a few choruses, with the title repeated throughout the track. Towards the middle he recites the Lord's Prayer in full, which fueled the fire for some to say the song was blasphemous. Toward the end is a repeating chant of doggerel: "People call me rude / I wish we all were nude / I wish there was no black and white / I wish there were no rules." The song is straight funk with a steady drumbeat, synthesized bass, "chicken grease" guitar and keyboards. The song was backed with "When You Were Mine", from his previous album, Dirty Mind. Controversy I just can't believe all the things people say (Controversy) Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay? (Controversy) Do I believe in God? Do I believe in me? Yeah (Controversy) CHORUS: Controversy Controversy I can't understand human curiosity (Controversy) Was it good 4 U? Was I what U wanted me 2 be? (Controversy) Do U get high? Does your daddy cry? (Controversy) CHORUS Do I believe in God? Do I believe in me? (Yeah, ooh yeah) Some people wanna die so they can be free I said, life is just a game, we're all just the same Do U wanna play? (Yeah, yeah, yeah) CHORUS {x3} Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever Love ya, love ya, baby Listen... People call me rude, I wish we were all nude I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were no rules People call me rude, I wish we were all nude I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were (was) no rules Do I believe in God? Do I believe in me? Let me tell U, some people wanna die so they can be free I said life is just a game, we're all just the same Don't U wanna play? © 1981 Controversy Music - ASCAP
