Dirty Mind... similar sounding albums?

Inspired by the topic Sococo wrote about if there are similar sounding albums to Around The World In A Day...

I'm more curious to if there are some good albums inspired by the Dirty Mind sound, production etc... As I am a producer and a sound engineer, I'm experimenting alot with sound. And I would love to study this type of production and music style as well, as I also am a musician. I don't really think the style that Prince perfected on Dirty Mind was getting too popular, as the new wave movement with drum machines and heavy use of reverb was taking over just a couple years later. This means that one can further develope this sound into something new without sounding dated. It's still fresh to me. Prince and For You sounds more similar production wise to other disco albums back then.

Thanks alot! I do remember someone posting other artists too that had a similar vibe and sound production wise on another thread, but the thread wasn't discussing the sound of one album. You could probably name hundreds of albums, maybe thousand that copied or was inspired by 1999 and Purple Rain. Also Controversy had a very tight production that would change peoples way of thinking. At this period of time I think he could be seen on as ahead of time also as a producer. He slowly got lazier production wise after Sign of The Times, but still managed to craft good soongs occationally.

Dirty Mind is one of the most interesting periods because of the obscurity of it compared to his bigger selling albums.

I think Dirty Mind was a demo and Prince wanted to produce more but was convinced to get it out in it's form as we know it.

In the past Ilistened to old work of Peter Gabriel (pre-SO). It struck me that it reminded me to Dirty Mind production.

This doesn't really answer your question but I always thought the synth line from DM sounded a lot like Van Halen's "Jump". Or am I way off?

Thanks for replies. I'm mainly looking for similar production, but also similar kind of "genre", even though this album is a mix between many, and each song is very different from the other. Prince was really good at both ignoring the rules, but perfectly understanding them. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to combine styles so easy as it sounds melted together.

The previous albums didn't melt genres as perfect as Dirty Mind. This was his start as an innovator, while he previously was just a very talented ecclectic kid imo.

I think janet's damita jo was compared to the dirty mind album when just a little while leaked, have a listen and see if you can hear it, cause I really didn't.
