MJ was a much better dancer. However I found Prince more expressive and fun watching, as he seems more free and the way he felt it, a bit like JB. JB could feel every little drum-/bass-/guitar-/brass hit, syncopated and non syncopated. JB felt it all to his from his feet to his fingertips, and he moved along with it. Prince is a bit like that, but not as masculine. JB has the moves of a great boxer, and could probably be a legendary athlete if he chose that route. Prince spends a bit more time on instruments to develop his moves the way JB and MJ did. Variety of moves: 6 Style: 10 My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

Not... Isn't it decades past the time when people still do the lame-ass Prince and MJ comparisons?!! Get a life, people... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

In most cases, we should be able to rate Prince in this particular instance on his personality & dancing alone, there really is no need to bring in comparing him to other people
to me its no different than going to a dance club and seeing people express themselves on the floor. How can you compare this person to the next?
Most of Prince dancing was just Prince what he did when listening to music or at the clubs in Minneapolis.
Now when he get's to the place where he has 10 dancers behind him and they are doing choreographed technical moves(Janet,Madonna,New Edition, Britney), then the comparisons can come in.
But I don't see the need to bring MJ into this
That is just Prince doing Prince
It really wasn't until the Batman period into GB that we started seeing Prince do more large group dance pieces. I never really cared for it. I like his playfull made up moves.

The main real and LASTING comparison IMO is P to James Brown for tight moves (see above) and control of thr band... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

he smashing! i love his moves!! his style so unique, i love the way every part of his body wants to twitch at every beat. however i really don't like it when he wiggles or does t-rex arms. i just watched the berlin 2010 dvd & he does some decent moves, can't take my eyes off him. the way he does that wrist clapping facinates me

I'm mesmerized & facinated I also prefer him dancing alone over a group

I LOVE his dancing,it's one of the things about him i admire. 86 - 88 are my favourite era's,he has excellent ballance & timing, his moves are unique & original & just down right funky. Plus he did it all in heels! "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

I love his dancing - it is always related to the mood of the music not choreographed as a previous poster stated. He becomes an extension to the music. Love it !!! Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I don't think prince was all that great of a dancer when he first started performing. He was just starting to develop his overall image and stage presence and i think because of that, his dancing lacked originality. It seems like he tried too hard to be like Mick Jagger. By the time 1999 came around Prince had his dancing routine down pat and from then on, i think the guy's been one of the most unique, creative and agile dancers in music. As with prince, a lot of performers have good choreography with all the bells and whistles but that guy..... jumping off of pianos and doing the splits...... ? He's definitely in my top 10. [Edited 10/9/12 22:12pm] Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

There are some moves and poses that Prince does that's clearly Michael Jackson though

I was just talking to a friend about Prince as a dancer today and I thought of this thread again lol. He doesn't really have much respect for Prince as a dancer and his main argument was basically it was too obvious for him that Prince doesn't take dancing seriously, which I happened to agree. I also agree with what Replica said, especially with your first paragraph. But I guess at the end of the day it just comes down to a matter of preference. As much as I also enjoy his spontaneous moves, sometimes it sort of bugs me to see some obvious flaws, for instance some awkward pauses or ending up facing the band instead of the audience after a spin move, etc.
Well, like you also mentioned he started having more backup dancers in the 90's but it really doesn't matter whether he had 1 or 2 or 10 dancers on stage with him. It's surprising to me how he's supposedly a perfectionist and yet the dance part of his shows has never been excellent. I think it's a bit sad to say Janet and Madonna's shows are choreographed far better than his, though they can be too methodical sometimes.

i'm not keen on his dad-dancing he occasionally breaks out these days. Recently saw a vid of him in Australia doing 'Kiss'. I was embarrassed for him. Needs to stop.
Used to be good, but never great.
If i saw someone next to me sliding on their back during housequake i'd step on the fucker.

I've always loved his moves, I think he's a pretty good dancer. [Edited 10/29/12 12:50pm] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Today: I hope I can get around half as good when I turn 50
After 1982: The combination of natural talent and choreography made the dudes jealous and the girlies all swoon
1979 - 1981: Acrobatic, energetic but a little hard to watch without laughing or cringing; just check out the alternate video for WYWTMSB. To be fair I would imaging most accomplished dancers have some sort of training or guidance alonng the way (even if not from a professional)

Prince is a sexy dancer you just can't take that away from him, the SOTT movie proved it.
Prince's moves in "Housequake", in the movie, just wow..
His dance routines back then.. needs recoqnition.
Maybe MJ had a bigger impact with his moonwalk, and JB cuz he was there before Prince with the splits..
But, still..
Prince was really a sexy dancer in the 80s, and in high heels, how the f*ck did he do that. MJ and JB were using flat shoes..
Prince wasn't a good dancer back then, he was a really good dancer, maybe even brilliant.
imo yes Prince was a lot sexier in his dance than both MJ and JB Prince 4Ever.

I do not find any of them sexy, so appreciate more through the lens of dance technique and influence.

A sexy dancer, yes. But sweetie you can't let his sexiness blind you when you judge his ability as a dancer. Prince's great, especially considering how he had a disadvantageous physique as a dancer; short legs, small hands and feet, relatively big head - in a way heels were a necessity for him to make his moves look better - he definitely made it work though, I'd give him that. But he wasn't the best or the greatest at every single thing he did. Certainly not in the same league as JB or MJ as a dancer. Besides, it's not about skills (and if it was, we'd be saying Omarion is a better dancer than Prince) so people have got to stop with his splits Yes JB did that long time ago and MJ also had done that when he was a teenager - side split leap, front splits he'd done it all already. It's about the delivery. For example Prince, MJ, James can all do the same footwork but the energy level is already different. MJ and Prince can both do something as simple as stretching their arms out and one can create a lot more excitement. Only the real, best dancers can do that - they know how to make a crowd go wild by just holding a pose

Prince has great appearance and attitude. His expressive confidense and eye contact with the audience makes every single tiny little move he does great. This combined with a freaky sexual image and androgyne sensuality, he has something mysterious about him that makes people watch closer. Michael Jackson was a big fan of Charlie Chaplin, but Prince really managed to have similar visual qualities, as well as entertaining sound to it. When this man was in great shape, it was easy for him to make anything look good, and he knows how to react to the music in the right places. He is not as explosive as James Brown, or as technical as Michael Jackson, but I gotta admit that he is more entertaining to me than MJ atleast. And I love MJ at his best. But he seemed more choreographed and rehearsed like a movie. A movie is to be watched. But even a great movie doesnt let you interact with it. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

Actually MJ did some freestyle here and there and I think a lot of people overlook that and consider it another rehearsed move because he did it so superbly. I guess it's a good thing how people can appreciate different styles. Yes Prince can be entertaining in a way how he can be spontaneous and make a fool out of himself sometimes with imperfect moves and not give a shit. In that respect Mick Jagger and Madonna just as entertaining though.

What's great about Princes dancing is that it is consistent with everything else he does. He changes his hair, his dominant color scheme (Purple vs. Peach for SOTT vs. Blue vs. Red), clothes, sound, guitar, dance, everything is part of a larger concept.
James Brown and MJ are fine, but do the same things over and over again (images of MJ with a high bent knee slap followed by a groin grab).
Watch Prince in the opening scenes of Purple Rain, then watch House Quake and It on SOTT -
