oh we oh - origin? Does anyone else know the origin of this little ditty? I've just discovered where prince stole it from/ was influenced by. I'd be nterested in your thoughts on this and then I'll give the secret away, although you all probably already know and I'm 20 years too late!

Okay, so I've been a Prince fan since 1980, but I have always wondered about the origin of this. I know that "oh we oh we oh" is chanted in "Jungle Love," but I don't remember it being chanted by fans during the Purple Rain Tour. The first time I remember hearing the chant by fans was on the Sign "O" the Times film. And with all of my bootlegs, I don't remember hearing the chant during the Hit & Run or Parade Tour. So, did the chant start during the Sign "O" the Times Tour and was this a European thing? I don't remember the chant at any American concerts I attended from 1980 to 1985, but I could just be gettin' old and my memory is fading fast.
Woops: I had “ho” for “oh.” Must be a Freudian slip.

Don't one of the American baseball teams also do this as a crowd chant? I'm thinking the Chicago Indians, but I could be wrong? Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Also, it was done on the Parade tour, as that's where the "Beautiful Night" live rendition on SOTT comes from. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

It did start on the Parade tour (as far as I know)-- he did it during "A Love Bizarre" at a few shows in addition to "Beautiful Night".
There was also a song out in '86 called "Bye Bye" by an artist named Janice-- the track samples the "oh we oh" chant from Wizard of Oz-- I don't know if Prince heard the track at the time or if it may have influenced him to start including the chant in concerts.

Or maybe he saw the movie on TV every year from the time he was 7 - like every other American kid. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. also, wasn't there some big to-do about the movie around that time? I seem to remember in my childhood there was some renewed fascination with it or something. maybe it got re-colored or released on VHS or there was some anniversary or something.
I remember a shit-load of commercials for it, for some reason.

That's right; "Beautiful Night" on Sign "O" the Times is from the Parade Tour. I overlooked that because "Beautiful Night" is not on either of the six (3 CDs and 3 Vids) boot concerts that I have of the Parade Tour. And, I must have either overlooked or just don't remember the chant being done during "A Love Bizarre," but I'll take you all's word for it. My favorite Parade Tour show is the Boston, MA, show, followed closely by An American in Paris and September. I know it's not done during the Boston show, and I've just forgotten it from the other two, but I'll be re-listening to them soon. Thanks.

Ouch. What a wonderful way to learn that princevault has album liner notes that was. Are you also gonna tell me that I could've have found it by checking the liner notes on the CD insert because that would be extremely helpful, too. I'm just exchanging information and making conversation here on the web. Whether the info comes from a google search or a fellow offer doesn't matter much to me. Btw, you only get four hits (including this thread) if you google that phrase in quotes so thinking that random passages from prince's liner notes aren't on the web is not unreasonable. But now I know. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"
