If you were hired to put together "Purple Rain 30th Anniversary Edition" what would it look/sound like?

So the 30th Anniversary of Purple Rain is on June 25th, 2014, whether there will actually be a "30th anniversary edition" is irrelevant and not the discussion or point of this thread. This is just for fun lol So, If you were hired to put together PURPLE RAIN 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION what would it look like? anything you can think of from the case to the tracks whatever, tell me what you would do.

Album artwork I'm not sure exactly how I would do it but the album would obviously be remastered and the track listings would be as follows:

(All songs are the original album version unless specified differently)

1. Let's Go Crazy (7 minute version/the one that is actually used in the movie) (7:38)

2. Erotic City (3:56)

3. Take Me With U (3:54)

4. The Beautiful Ones (5:14)

5. Computer Blue (4:00)

6. Darling Nikki (4:14)

7. When Doves Cry (5:56)

8. 17 Days (3:58)

9. I Would Die 4 U (2:57)

10. Another Lonely Christmas (4:54)

11. Baby I'm A Star (4:24)

12. Purple Rain (8:41)

13. God (4:05)

I'd keep the original album cover, and include a booklet with lyrics, photos and some sort of writing about the making of the album. Make it a multiple disc set, with disc 1 being the original album remastered; disc 2 being extended mixes / b-sides / previously unreleased outtakes; and disc 3 being a live DVD from the Purple Rain tour (or you could just use the movie). Maybe a live CD in addition to the DVD. Then put out a cheaper single disc version with just the original album remastered.

Notes:

Electric Intercourse (CD1.03 and CD4.01) was to originally be on the Purple Rain record but was replaced by The Beautiful Ones. There is no known studio recording of Electric Intercourse.

Possessed – Instrumental – (CD1.05) can be heard in the Purple Rain film as background music when Morris and Appolonia are sitting together in First Avenue. The vocal version was performed every night of the Purple Rain tour and remains unreleased.

In the Purple Rain film, the cassette that is handed to Prince that contains the song written by Wendy and Lisa that is to become Purple Rain is hand-titled: Slow Groove, hence the titles of CD2.05 & .06 and the title of this compilation.

Purple Rain (CD2.09), Baby I’m a Star – outtake (CD2.05), I would Die 4 U – outtake (CD2.04), Electric Intercourse (CD1.03) and Let’s Go Crazy 12” (CD1.01) were all recorded, pre-edits and overdubs, at First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis Minnesota on August 3rd 1983. The show cost 10 dollars and was a benefit for ballet choreographer Loyce Houlton’s Minnesota Dance Theatre. MDT was where the Prince crew had been receiving dance lessons in preparation for the upcoming filming of the Purple Rain film. This show is also significant as it was Wendy Melvoin’s (age 19) first show, making the first official Prince and the Revolution show. Two songs here, Electric Intercourse and Purple Rain are taken from an in-house video taping of this show, which still remains the best available source.

Sex Shooter - Vanity Version (CD3.09) Vanity aka Denise Williams sings here on the original pre-Apollonia version of this song.

The backwards message from Baby I’m a Star (CD5.04) is played twice and says the following “So like, fuck them, man! What do they know? All their taste is in their mouth. Reallt, what the fuck do they know? C’mon baby let’s go…crazy!”

The backwards message from It's backwards (CD5.02 & .03) Is something like “It’s not alright, I don’t’ want to got hell!... I want to goto heaven!” and whole lot more.

Slow Groove: “An Alternate Universe Purple Rain” was compiled at a place very close to where U live.

For further in-depth understanding of Prince and the Revolution during the Purple Rain era we recommend the following: Purple Rain the album, Purple Rain 20th anniversary DVD has all the videos and interviews with rev –Prince. Prince and the Revolution Live Syracuse New York 1985 – an excellent video document of the Purple Rain tour that shows the band at the near height of their powers. This is long out of print, but still fairly easy to find. Prince and the Revolution Live @ First Aug 3rd 1983 video the first Revolution show - strictly a bootleg.

The sequencing on the original album is perfect so I wouldn't mess that up by including the bonus songs, they sould be added at the end. BUT, I would use the longer outtakes that are circulating on the various "deluxe" versions that are floating around. The extended "Computer Blue" is a MUST!

1. Let's Go Crazy (7:35)

2. Take Me With You (3:54)

3. The Beautiful Ones (6:07)

4. Computer Blue (7:29)

5. Darling Nikki (4:49)

6. When Doves Cry (5:54)

7. I Would Die 4 U (2:51)

8. Baby I'm A Star (4:22)

9. Purple Rain (8:48)

10. 17 Days (3:55)

11. Erotic City (5:31)

12. I Would Die 4 U (extended) (10:20)

13. Another Lonely Christmas (6:47)

14. God

Don't think an expanded version will happen, so I'm very happy with the unofficial versions.

Just like the white winged dove...

one of the greatest treaures 2 include would be the purple note book that prince had back then during the 1999 tour that was the beginning of purple rain. it would be nice 2 see deleted footage and a live paisely park studio jam session with prince and the revolution current celebrating purple rain

The album, as is. Plus 7" edits, 12" mixes, the b-sides + related artists songs featured in the movie.

The Aug 3rd '83 show. The out-takes, alt. versions and unreleased songs relating to the project and the era.

That's 4 CDs at least, and I'd stick the Syracuse show on Bluray in their too, and of course the movie. Maybe a tour T-shirt, the little cone-puppet thing, a venetian mask, reproduction tour program, all in a box.

I expect a remaster with a couple of 12" mixes and a slip case. confused

I think I would start with this as the point of comparison:

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Also, do a series of shows in major venues (e.g., London, NYC, LA) playing the entire Purple Rain album in full with the Revolution.

Impressive. Love it but Vanity was Denise Matthews, not Denise Williams. Other than that, this would be a cool release.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Disc 1 I think should be the album as it was released but obviously remastered. There would be room for more songs but I don't know if it would be good for the flow of the album to have them mixed in or at the end.

Disc 2 should have:

Let's Go Crazy (Fresh Dance Mix)

Erotic City (Extended Version)

17 Days

Another Lonely Christmas

God (Vocal)

God (Instrumental)
Father's Song

I Would Die 4 U (Extended Version)

Computer Blue (Hallway Speech Version)

Possessed (Extended Version)

Electric Intercourse

All Day, All Night

G Spot

The Dance Electric

Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden

Maybe various demos from the Family project, The Time, Sheila E, and Apollonia 6 (I would KILL to hear his version of A Million Miles), and other songs from the era that we don't really know about?

Disc 3 - Maybe a live CD from the Purple Rain tour?

Disc 4 could be the DVD/Blu-ray of the Syracuse show

You're welcome. He is touring now with the original band from that album and playing the whole album at each concert (along with other stuff). I'm going to the upcoming show at the Hollywood Bowl.

So is a great album but did not come close to the sales of Purple Rain. Prince could easily do this and it would be a good thing for all involved.

Why has no-one mentioned the major outtake of the time which was originally slated for release - Wednesday....?!

I would want to hear that. It amazes me that's never fully leaked.

Purpleaxxe1972

The only things I'd add would be his piano version of purple rain and the movie's extended version of I would die 4 u. The rest is perfect.
