Prince was searching for purpose after "Under the Cherry Moon" flopped and "Parade" underperformed. So he returned to nature. He began to stand in pastures, staring longingly at the road just ahead. His diet consisted entirely of cud, grass, and oddly enough chocolate milkshakes. And he kept asking members of the Revolution to "milk him" which, more than anything else, probably led to the dissolution of the band. But there was a method to his madness because the idea was forming for a 6 disc mega-album, "Cream Factory", which he would release without videos and mostly at state fairs and 4H Club meetings. Warner Bros., which by that point had been completely overtaken by horses, balked so Prince paired it down to a 4 CD project, "Crystal Bull", which included a 26 minute title track. But the WB execs neighed that too so, out of complete frustration, Prince released a semi-successful 2 CD set, "Sign O the Times". Critics liked it but all of the cow material that was so close to Prince's heart was excised.

I read that too but if you look at "Prince - The Herdy Years" it also says, and I quote:

"Around the time of the seminal "Cream Factory" he took to sheltering in darkened barns and ramshackled sheds. Insisting on wearing nothing but black or white clothing, both ears were pierced and tagged with letters and numbers. No pictorial evidence has been unearthed, yet sources local to the sheds in question are certain the tags had WX - 147 clearly marked on each ear. Prince, still contracted to the horses at Warner Bros began the pain-steaking task of shedding himself of his management. Buffalo, along with Fargnarly and Calfallo were mooving on, though not for some thyme."
