So if mr P were to press 'bootleg' material onto DVD, would you pay? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Okay, I'm painting the lounge (cutting-in actually) and have just finished watching/listening to Sign o the Times whilst I did it. I admit it. It was excellent. I'm envious of those that attended those shows, all I've seen were three gigs at the O2 and one aftershow. The difference is quite staggering. Such energy. Highlights were Housequake, Beautiful Night and The Cross. Awesome isn't a word I like to use as my evangelical sister and her family tend to overuse it but in the case of the latter two songs I mentioned I think it applies.

Question: If Prince presses bootlegs, would they still be called bootlegs? I meant if it's good material yes.. Am willing to listen to all live version of Prince's music, if he had released, I would have paid for them, yes..but he doesn't really do that..too bad Whereas, Prince needs to be aware that his fans definetely prefer him live, well I do We make our own way to heaven everyday

I guess not. Look up what Zappa did.
He can't allow those imperfect recordings to be released unedited. They do need overdubs, corrections, edits, and whatever. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I'd buy live DVD's to all of his tours.
Not sure why Prince bemoans bootleggers, yet doesn't put out his own stuff.
It seems like a very basic way to build the fan base and get more people interested in going to see him/buy his albums.

Possible reasons would include:
- Perfectionism: doesn't allow supposedly flawed material published - Incompetence: due to contractual mishappenings the materials aren't released - Misunderstanding: someone doesn't understand markets - Greed: the works would not yield enough yet - Conscience: does not allow works with supposedly `naughty` lyrics published - etc Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... - Laziness. He doesn't want to spend the time to work on it. [Edited 10/4/12 7:24am]

Would the DVD/Bluray (yes please) be distributed independently or through a major?

buy it - probably watch it - once maybe twice dust collector - highly likely prefer over earlier bootlegged concerts - high unlikely

Indeed, do you see the Prince of today promoting footage of his own self of around e.g. 1980? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

That's the thing. He doesn't have to. It's there he just needs to hire (there are probably those that create quality bootlegs that'd volunteer) someone to compile the footage, and add a slick dvd menu. Boom. Done. I'll paypal Prince $15 to send it to me in the mail. Cannot be that difficult.
There are commericals for DVD collections that are simply footage of model trains. If those folks can produce/make money find the market for that, then Prince has no excuse. "New Power slide...."

One of the complaints was that cutting up 21 shows to fill one CD/DVD/BD/etc is a waste. Besides, the Concert Hall `seating` has a capcity of 2,679. That is a bit small, aside of the `seated` issue.
Didn't ya know yet that failbook is a privacy risk? As well as a stocks scam? (price & voting rights) Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

He's still calling his "band" (and that is a word that is only technically correct, since IMHO the people on stage do NOT play in the same band; they're hired help) NPG. A term that's been around since 1988, and the name of his band since 1991. That name should have been dropped when Michael and Sonny got kicked out.
If he can't be arsed to drop that name, he won't stop doing the Welcome 2 gigs. © Bart Van Hemelen

You obviously do not remember that Prince once sold VHS-copies of "taped from Japanese tv" specials. Or that the NPG Music Club once had a download of "Horny Pony" that was ripped from a cassette tape. © Bart Van Hemelen

ever ownd
I never owned a tape-based video recorder. I still am more into discs. Also: I mean first releases of stuff, of performances. Your examples do indeed show flaws in the flaws-policy but the media used were pretty low-res to begin with; also those were not first-releases, masters. Today we would be looking at least at a DVD-9 with high-bitrate video/audio if not a BluRay with a full, unedited show with perhaps some behind the scenes and/or soundcheck material. That will never happen. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I agree - the setlist needs to be totally revamped. Hell, EVERYTHING needs to be changed up. The "symbol" stage is getting a little tired now, as well as the cover songs and the "sampler". He talks about "I got too many hits!" yet he wastes setlist time singing other people's hits. Also, I'm sick of the acoustic vesion of "Little Red Corvette". That was fine for awhile, now I'd rather hear the original with the synths and the guitar.

Honestly, I think the days of him producing "world class tracks" are probably gone, let alone expecting him to do 10.
I think his next tour should just be a greatest hits tour, because lets face it - that's what most people want to hear. Most people have heard enough of all the random album tracks, non-hits, and cover songs over the last several years and he needs to go back to basics.
