Prince is fiddling with the tape deck inside the T-Bird. On low volume comes his unreleased "Old Friends 4 Sale," an arrow-to-the-heart rock ballad about trust and loss. Unlike "Positively 4th Street" -- which Bob Dylan reputedly named after a nearby Minneapolis block -- the lyrics are sad, not bitter. "I don't know too much about Dylan," says Prince, "but I respect him a lot. 'All Along the Watchtower' is my favorite of his. I heard it first from Jimi Hendrix."

"Old Friends 4 Sale" ends, and on comes "Strange Relationships," and as-yet-unreleased dance tune. "Is it too much?" asks Prince about playing his own songs in his own car. "Not long ago I was driving around L.A. with [a well-known rock star], and all he did was play his own stuff over and over. If it gets too much, just tell me."

An ignition turns. "Wait," calls Prince, remembering something. He grabs a tape off the T-Bird seat and yells to his father, "I got something for you to listen to. Lisa [Coleman] and Wendy [Melvoin] have been working on these in L.A." Prince throws the tape, which the two female members of his band have mixed, and his father catches it with one hand. Nelson nods okay and pulls his car behind his son's in the alley. Closely tailing Prince through North Minneapolis, he waves and smiles whenever we look back. It's impossible to believe that the gun-toting geezer in Purple Rain was modeled after John Nelson.

Yes those are from the rehearsal, looks like the rehearsal is mostly from the 1999 lyrics

Man the original lyrics are so insanely great.

Prince sure ain't no Dylan, but sometimes he just nails it.

The music is dope, but Prince sounds horrible. he really needs to stop touring & stop singing for a good year. I really must say for the first time [with RnR Affair & this rehearsal] Prince actually sounds like a old man singing these songs. He should take a year off to get the remasters out there, & them come back with a new album in 2014. But his best days are definitely behind him....I won't be expecting much from any new music from him....

I dont know who all performed on the original outside of Prince Lisa & Wendy but that original cant be touch

I just think that all of the constant touring is really effecting his vocals. Whether he believes in aging or not, reality is reality & he's really sounding his age these days....

...the more and more I'm more convinced that Prince = Drfunkenberry and Drfunkenberry = Prince.

Quite coincidentally I listened to Peach & Black's podcast on Clare Fisher this morning... they respectfully discussed the arrangments. But if I understand correctly this song dates originally back to the mid-eigties (according to that Rolling Stone interview from 1985), which means he was not involved with Mr Clare Fisher than... He was looking for an arranger and first he had to cash a lot, in order to hire him...

DSM-IV is still rather simplistic in categorizing all types of mental deficiencies; but doctors like to put patient's hardships in little boxes so they can prescribe pills that might 'work'.

Still sensitive to interpretation, context of the doctor and/or patient and what not.
