The last time he really surprised me was N.E.W.S.. He really went outside of his usual territories there.
I'm sure he can do it again, he doesn't doesn't want to. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I'd go with that. N.E.W.S & Xpectation too were certainly interesting/different.

how were they different? .. i've heard that shit in elevators for decades .. and they contained no new 'sounds' ... the mix of linn thru a guitar amp and effects pedals with fat over distorted synths of 1999 was a new sound .. the raw demo like quality of dirty mind was a new sound .. the psychadelic robot rock of purple rain was a new sound .. the jazzy french funk of parade was a new sound .. the exquisit harmonies of adore or the poetry of if eye was ur girlfriend was a new sound .. prince hasn't had a new sound since joy in repetition .. after that he just became a stock sound kinda guy .. stock rap .. stock pop .. stock jazz .. stock "driving music" .. stock "mnpls" sound ... he's not doing anything new here .. move along

^ I meant new/different in comparison to what Prince had done before, not to the whole history of music. I never expected Prince to do something like the first part of East and that was refreshing.
The more music I listen (and I listen to a LOT of music), the more I find that nothing (including all the Prince classics you mention above) is really "new" or even "different", as everything picks from such or such -more or less obscure- preexisting work of art. There are many precedents to many aspects of Dirty Mind and 1999...
Stuff that you call elevator music, others call it ambient or experimental. Kamasutra was cheesy as hell for sure in comparison to similar recordings by contemporary composers, but I think N.E.W.S. was a subtle and strong work, once again by comparison to other similar works by other musicians (and that's a Bill Laswell fan talking).
Just my opinion, it's cool if we disagree

Different as in they didn't sound like NPS, RAVE or any of that plastic sounding stuff he did on NPGMC. Just cause you equate it to elevator music doesn't mean he wasn't attempting to get away from the previous few years.

Whilst I liked NEWS and (much more) Xpectation, the last time I was FLABBERGASTED with a Prince album was with The Rainbow Children.
No, I don't think there's the slightest possibility of him doing something that I could consider stunning.
Too much rubbish during too many years make me think so.

I think that he might surprise us once or many times more in the future, though there's a printed style stuck to Prince. I am quite sure that travelling around the world, listenning to sounds and music from elsewhere could ressource and boost his personal "hardware" and prolific brain, new vibes, new sounds will hit and flash We make our own way to heaven everyday

And you are so 'broad-assed' that it's only natural that you love every fart Prince lets out.

Already turning into bickering and it's not even a flaming thread yet lol!
When I read the title, my mind immediately went ahead thinking this thread was referencing Rock and Roll Love Affair as opposed to 20ten/Lotus/MPLS in which case i feel that (god willing) Prince does have a new sound
Now, I know that you can't base a turn in styles on just one song when there hasn't even been an new album announced yet, but I feel like the lyrical content of the song is Prince really turning over a new leaf. Hopefully a non JW leaf lol.
I think Andy Allo has had a big effect on Prince (not a 'rebound born of despair like Mani), I see her influencing his style unlike the last couple proteges (Tamar and Bria) who appeared to be interchangeable. If Andy can help usher in more tracks like RaRLA and get Prince away from the Bible cults, we'll be forever in her debt.
Keeping my fingers crossed this IS Prince's new sound "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds
