Mmmh... This was intended for The Time in the first place, never for Prince. I wish I could hear more of the original versions with Prince and Morris but as far as Mazarati's version go, I find it terribly soft and ungroovy "compared" to the terrific funk swing of the final, released version. It needed The Time to rework it without Prince for the song to reach its full potential. IMHO at least. |

not really it was intended for Mazarati in 1986
I thought their version was hot and in 1986 would have been a standout. Sir Casey's voice just isn't strong enough
I never really heard the Time's version outside of the movie |

The Time version rocks: look for the promo video (it's the single edit - the album version is much longer), it's online and easy to find.
It was composed in 1981 and then intended for The Time, but not used, THEN much later in 1985 it was reworked for Mazarati but once again not used, until 1990 when The Time recorded Pandemonium and asked Prince to give it back to them (alongside Chocolate) and reworked it on their own for its final release.
So even when first recorded, Prince apparently never considered it for personnal use, which kinda makes sense since the lyrics are definitely the kind of things that Prince would WRITE for Morris Day, but never SING under his own name (the whole sexist, macho thing).

definately follows their Ice Cream Castles / Jungle Love issues
Pvault -
The track's lyrics were inspired by an incident on the Controversy Tour, when some of The Time's bandmembers were removed from a flight ("jerked out") for causing a disturbance.
I took her 2 my crib and I tied her up I figured that's what she liked Maybe I was wrong but what the hell It didn't matter 2 me - she was white I said "How come people in your neighborhood Don't like it when a brother's rich? Ain't my blood the same color as yours? Answer that question, bitch!" |

The Mazarati and Time version are almost two totally different songs.
The Mazarati version doesnt even have a chorus. It does however feature some very nice musical elements (like extra funky, chilling keyboard and vocal breakdowns).
The Time version is clean and has more of flow. The music is not that dfferent but features alot more personality and is not as dark as the Mazarati one. There are also spoken parts from Morris and two stella's this is hilarious. If you do not have the Pandemonium album I would suggest picking it up.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records. |
